Australian Beachgoers Find World’s Oldest Message in a Bottle 132 Years After Being Tossed from German Ship

March 7, 2018 by Reuters

MELBOURNE, March 7 (Reuters) – The oldest known message in a bottle was found on an Australian beach 132 years after being thrown from a German ship in the Indian Ocean as part of an experiment to track currents, experts said.

The Dutch gin bottle, with no cork or top, was spotted by Tonya Illman in January in remote sand dunes 180 km (112 miles)north of Perth, the capital of Western Australia state.

Inside, her family discovered a note tightly rolled up and tied with string, carrying the date June 12, 1886, and the name of the ship, Paula.

“We took it home and dried it out, and when we opened it, we saw it was a printed form, in German, with very faint German handwriting,” Illman said.

Her husband searched online to find that, in an experiment run from 1864 to 1933 by the Deutsche Seewarte, or German Naval Observatory, ship captains would throw bottles overboard, each with a message giving the date, the ship’s name, its location coordinates, home port and destination.

“It was clearly very exciting, but we needed a lot more information,” said Illman’s husband, Kym. “We wanted to know if what we had found was historically significant or a very inventive hoax.”

The family took their find to the Western Australian Museum, which got experts in Germany and the Netherlands to confirm the bottle was made in Holland in the 19th century, the paper matched the era and the vessel Paula had sailed from Cardiff to Makassar in 1886, as the message stated.

The message is dated 12 June 1886 and was jettisoned from the German sailing barque Paula as part of a long-term German oceanographic experiment to better understand global ocean currents and find faster, more efficient shipping routes. Image credit: Western Australian Museum

German experts turned up the ship’s journal, with a captain’s entry from June 12, 1886 showing that a drift bottle was thrown overboard. The coordinates, 950 km (590 miles) from Australia’s west coast, matched those on the note.

The handwriting in both journal and note also matched. The find has been authenticated by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) and Germany’s National Meteorological Service (DWD).

“The forms have changed a lot over the years, but in the 1860 period, the form is exactly what you have,” the BSH said in a report.

Researchers think the bottle probably washed up on the coast within a year of being thrown overboard, to be buried in sand until a storm uncovered it.

The message and the bottle will be on display for two years at the museum in the Australian port city of Fremantle.

“It’s quite stunning, I’ve never experienced anything that corroborates so fully as this,” said Ross Anderson, a specialist in maritime archaeology at the museum. (Reporting by Stefica Nicol Bikes; Writing by Sonali Paul; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Incredible torpedo speedboat that is part submarine, part FIGHTER JET can catapult you across the waves at 50mph (if you have £70,000 spare)
  • The combination jet-ski, racing boat and submarines come styled as sharks, killer whales and dolphins
  • The Seabreacher operates more like an aircraft than boat with full three axis of control – pitch, roll, and yaw
  • This allows the vessel to carve left and right, jump over, dive under, and cut though surface waves
  • The boats tear through the water at up to 50 mph (80 kmh) or dives below the surface at 25mph (40 kmh)
  • Prices vary from around $80,000 (£56,000) to top-of-the-range models upwards of $100,000 (£71,000)

Under Attack! the Mould Invasion! - Sailing Nandji, Ep 73
Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

Published on Mar 25, 2018
Being off the boat for a week in the tropics means only one thing. Attack of the black mould! https://www.sailingnandji.com

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, Bonita's folks leave us and we are back to the boat with the weather still very stormy. Wanting to leave the anchorage and find some reception, we depart with the weather still very unpredictable. A great introduction back to boat life! Of course we need to change course and head for a more more protected anchorage due to the weather. Finally the sun returns and with it is the invasion of the black mould. With no air flow in the boat for over a week, things became a little smelly and then the invasion begun. We spend (well Bonita mostly) cleaning and scrubbing the boat with natural remedies and let you in on some secrets. With a clean boat again, we head back to town where Marley gets him self into some mischief...

Hello Pacific! Panama Canal Transit - Ep. 93 RAN Sailing
RAN Sailing

Published on Mar 23, 2018
After almost 2 years in the Atlantic we will arrive to a new ocean. The biggest ocean in the world, the Pacific! Together with our linehandlers we transit one of the wonders of the modern world, the Panama Canal.

Our friends on SY Carpe Mare have written a guide with all the information about the canal transit (find the document in the bottom of the post): http://www.carpe-mare.se/2018/01/12/p...

This is the guide book we use: http://amzn.to/2HvilA9

We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

The Fear of Dragging Anchor ALONE on the boat. (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 134
Sailing La Vagabonde

Published on Mar 26, 2018
Riley and Josje left me onboard by myself to go and hike a red hill on the island of La Graciosa. The wind picked up to 32 knots, gusting to 35 and the two boats next to me left to find shelter one having dragged anchor first. I’d stayed home to catch up on some work but because stress levels were through the roof, I didn’t get a thing done. But I’m glad I did stay home, because we would have never of known about the sudden change in the weather all the way up on that hill. One engine wasn’t working and the other wasn’t 100% reliable (the same problem with the control boxes needing replacing and a jump start was required if you wanted to fire it up before then). Not the end of the world unless you need to get out of somewhere quickly and you’re a one woman show. Join us in the Canary Islands for an ADVENTURE. It's Josje on YouTube! We love her:

On a mission from Delos - Sailing Nandji, Ep 74
Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

Brady from SV Delos gets in contact with us and sends us on a mission. Detectives Yosh & Bon, Super Slooths https://www.sailingnandji.com

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, Marley and Bonita go for a little excerise and run into a pack of dogs who want to tear the bark off them. With the braveness of Bonita, they both escape but not worse for wear. We high tale it out of the city on a mission. Brady from the well known vessel SV Delos, wrote to us asking if we could translate some lyrics in a song for him. With Detective's Yosh and Bonita on the case, we steadily track down the location of the language. We deal with some unexpected weather in an anchorage that is not the best suited for what is coming. Leaving the following day, we head out a nice day sail and of course have engine issues at sea. Thats why we carry spare parts people! Enjoy!

SURFING FOREIGN WATERS
Tula's Endless Summer

http://tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ It’s hard to score really good waves when you are traveling but if you travel long enough and can be at the right spot at the right time you may just get lucky with some surf. We got really lucky!
