Ships, Currents, Upwind and a Scooter? Exploring Rote Island (Sailing Nandji) Ep 107
Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

Published on Dec 15, 2018
Another Upwind passage competing with Currents and Ships, then a Scooter? https://www.sailingnandji.com

This week on Sailing Nandji, After successfully clearing back into Indonesia, we head to sea on a upwind passage South to the island of Rote in search of some surf for Yosh. There is a strong opposing current which makes sailing upwind difficult in the light conditions, throw a few ships in the mix and everything becomes exciting!
We visit the busy local market and load up on supplies. Walking through town resembles a free range farm as the goats, chickens, pigs and cows roam where they feel. Exploring the island by Indonesias favourite transport, the Scooter! We discover some beautiful white sandy beaches and return the following day so Yosh can have his first surf in 6 months!
Not wasting time though, it is back to sea we go heading West to Malaysia where we plan to install our new engine!

We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have been in Indonesia for a couple of months cruising and are now high tailing to Malaysia for boat work. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades!

Catching Tuna and Using the Sea Anchor (DJs Dives)
DJs Dives

Published on Dec 16, 2018
In this week's video we are out to sea and have all of the fishing lines out in hopes of increasing our provisions on board. We go through a school of tuna and end up getting back-to-back bites on two different lines! Captain Kevin reels in the tuna and then it's time to feast on some sashimi.

We have had really light winds lately so the night watches have been a little bit of a struggle to keep the boat on course since there is no wind to actually sail. Captain Kevin decides that we can use the sea anchor so that the boat can float along with the current and everybody can have a night off from their night-watch duties. Since we haven't used or even seen a sea anchor before we get quite excited to see what the fuss is all about.

The Whales Of Bishop Bay Hot Spring - Ep. 131 RAN Sailing
RAN Sailing

Published on Dec 14, 2018
As we sail south on the Inside Passage in British Columbia we stumble upon another Swedish boat way older than Ran. We visit a first nation village and take a bath in the hot spring of Bishop Bay while watching a pod of humpback whales.

We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

The WORST FOG we have ever been in!
Wicked Salty

Published on Dec 20, 2018
This was easily the worst fog we have ever been in! Pretty nerve racking getting engulfed in it while in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal where there is a lot of large ships and land nearby and technically you are not allowed to drop anchor there! Couldn't see more than 50 feet, this is how we handled it.

Crossing the North Sea Singlehanded. WINTERTIME.
Erik Aanderaa

Published on Feb 15, 2019
Hi everyone!

The 26th of January at 10:00 I set sail again to cross the furosious North Sea for Shetland to experience the Up Helly Aa vikingfestival.

Strong winds up to 40 knots, heavy snow and a very long periode of complete dark rushed my little boat through huge waves all the way to landfall Shetland in 32 hours.

It was an amazing experience to be in the middle of this and feel the real wrath of Mother Nature breathing heavely down my neck, making it very clear whos the boss out in these waters. And its not me.

I hope you enjoy this as I hope you get the feeling of what its like to be in a small boat, listen to the threatening sounds of the wind and waves as the snow wips your face until you just get ice cold.

All the best, and stay safe.

Erik

Man Overboard Uses Jeans to Survive Hours Lost at Sea
March 12, 2019 by Reuters

WELLINGTON, March 12 (Reuters) – Knocked overboard in rough seas off New Zealand, a German yachtsman credited his jeans with saving his life after fashioning them into a make-shift life jacket that kept him afloat for over three hours before his rescue by coastguards.

Arne Murke, 30, was sailing with his brother in Tolaga Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand’s north island, on March 6, when the yacht’s boom swung unexpectedly, whacking him into the water.

Unable to reach the life jacket thrown by his brother, Murke was soon carried far off by the swell.

“Luckily, I knew the trick with the jeans,” Murke told the New Zealand Herald newspaper. “Without the jeans I wouldn’t be here today. They were really the thing that saved me.”

He made knots at the end of the legs and pulled them over water to get air inside and then forced them under to trap the air and create an improvised life vest.

A rescue helicopter managed to locate the German about 3 1/2 hours after he was knocked overboard. Images of Murke floating in the water while being rescued have been circulating on the internet.

“It was fortunate the yacht had both a VHF radio and emergency beacons (two) to raise the alert,” Rescue Coordination Centre NZ Senior Search and Rescue Coordinator Chris Henshaw said in a statement on the agency’s website after the incident.

“Without appropriate communications devices and beacons it may have turned out differently.” Henshaw said.

The newspaper said the brothers, who had been tourists in New Zealand, had taken a commission to deliver the yacht, Wahoo, to Brazil.
