2019 Hyundai Santa Fe seven-seater SUV Review | Auto Expert John Cadogan | Australia

2019 SANTA FE REVIEW AND ROAD TEST

Santa Fe Active ACTIVE is the only one with a petrol engine available - the 2.4-litre four. It’s $43,000 plus on-roads. You can also get the 2.2 diesel for $3000 extra.

Active includes Adaptive cruise (which is remarkable value for the price) plus rear cross traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, blind spot alert, lane-keeping assistance, Apple and Android phone integrations, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring and 17-inch alloys.

Elite adds front parking sensors, 8-inch sat-nav system, leather, proximity key, paddle shifters, power front seats, Infinity premium audio system, dual-zone air conditioning, privacy glass, auto folding mirrors, power tailgate and 18-inch alloys. That’s a lot of extra kit for $54,000.

Highlander is just packed with stuff - and so it would want to be for $60,500 plus on-road costs. And for that you get the 360-degree camera system, auto parking for parallel and reverse, dynamic LED lights, panorama sunroof, 14 different power adjustments for the driver’s seat, LED interior lights, heated and ventilated front seats and heated outboard row 2 seats as well, plus wireless phone charging, a head-up display and 19-inch wheels. Not cheap, but fully loaded. A burger with the lot.

Across the range, thankfully, Santa Fe has retained the full-sized spare wheel and tyre of its predecessor. Tow capacity is maintained at 2000 kilos (that’s with trailer brakes, obviously).

In standard form, 100 kilos the static download limit on the towball. If you want to boost that there’s a genuine load assist kit, which is essentially a set of variable rate rear springs that increases the download limit to 150 kilos.

The Santa Fe’s all-wheel drive system is called HTRAC now, and its operation is drive mode-dependent. In ‘Sport’ mode it’ll shunt up to 50 per cent of the drive rearwards to give you maximum traction under heavy acceleration.

In ‘Comfort’ mode, the rear gets up to 35 per cent of the available drive, and in ‘Eco’ the vehicle basically defaults to front-drive to maximise fuel efficiency. You can also lock the drive system manually in 50:50 for traction-limited off-road situations, by hitting a button on the dash.

In the context of off-roading, Santa Fe is at best a light-duty all-terrain vehicle. Dirt roads - no problem, and even some easy tracks and reasonably straightforward mud and sand. Ice and snow - OK, as long as you’re not aiming for the South Pole, or something.

But anything truly hardcore or rough - you’ll probably break something. And remember, abuse is not covered by warranty. You need a full-on all-terrain wagon, with low-range gearing, like a Pajero Sport, for the properly blue-singlet stuff.

Beating the wilderness into submission is not Santa Fe’s forte - but mild adventuring is OK.

Now perhaps some economically rational comparisons:

Kia Sorento: It’s no surprise that this vehicle shares the platform and the diesel powertrain with Santa Fe. So they’re - kind of - dizygotic twins. There’s the 2.4-litre petrol four in the Santa Fe Active, versus the V6 petrol in Sorento.

So that’s a key difference - no V6 on Santa Fe, at least for now.
Kia offers a seven-year warranty against Santa Fe’s five - both with unlimited kilometres for non-commercial use. The Sorento is a little cheaper, model for model, but the Santa Fe feels more polished.

Mazda CX-9 is slightly bigger, and has the most hi-tech petrol engine of the seven-seat SUV set - a turbocharged version of the 2.5 atmo engine in the CX-5.

CX-9 is also polished product, but it is hobbled by both a short warranty and a space-saver spare tyre - and that spare would concern me on long regional trips or if I was planning on tasking the vehicle with heavy towing, or if I was visiting a remote area.

Toyota Kluger: It’s a decent SUV from a reputable manufacturer, and you get a full-sized spare, but once you scratch the surface you discover that Toyota is the king of mediocrity - big, thirsty petrol V6, no Apple or Android phone integration, plus an anorexic warranty. Kluger is robust, but it would not be my first choice.

Hyundai is a good company here in Australia. Customer support is excellent, the warranty, likewise, and reliability is high. New Santa Fe is a great addition to the range of seven-seat SUVs you should consider buying.

My AMG GT R is Damaged - Can PPF Save It?
Shmee150

Published on Jul 4, 2018
Things could have gone badly wrong for my Mercedes-AMG GT R when I spotted a scratch to a carbon fibre front fender. Fortunately the car has a complete Topaz Skin PPF, so did that save the day?

My GT R has done over 12,000 miles and is very much seeing daily driver duties. A risk that one takes from that level of usage including through snow and grime, taking part in supercar events, and travelling everywhere, is the chance of it picking up some knocks and bumps. In this case, following the Mille Miglia we spotted this mark to the front wing panel that looks like an impact from a bike or bicycle, not hugely surprising given all the tight towns, packed traffic and areas the car has been parked during the event.

Immediately it was apparent that the scratch had pierced and torn the PPF on the panel, but I had no way to know if the paint underneath would be fine or need some work to rectify it. It's also worth noting that carbon fibre panels don't really have flexibility, they are very strong and light but if pushed beyond their point of no return, will just crack and splinter.

Fortunately, the Topaz Skin did its job and my car was fine! Equally, we took a look at the stone chips picked up on the bonnet, which also showed more proof in the pudding. I've always been a big PPF advocate and that only strengthens now seeing the results in this situation.

You can find out more about Topaz with the following links:

My Focus RS Interior Makeover is Complete! | PROJECT PART 2
Shmee150

Published on Jul 6, 2018
This is just the beginning! My Ford Focus RS Red Edition project car now has a totally new look interior thanks to the work of Prototrim. To get this full overhaul underway the first thing to target was to fix the flaws of the cheap interior, and how better to do that than a fresh start with red and black Alcantara and leather - what do you think of how it's turned out?

The plan is for this to become quite a major project, starting off with cosmetic and aero parts while the engine is going through the run-in before moving onto dramatically raising the horsepower. With exterior parts to follow, the immediate place to start was to fix two of the most widely reported problems with the mk3 Focus RS; the quality of the interior and the height of the front seats.

With the model being a derivative of the base model Ford Focus, the interior is as such quite full of cheap plastics and doesn't have a particularly premium feel to it. To overhaul this, Prototrim worked on retrimming the seats in the front and the rear, the door cards and top rolls, a new custom dash topper working with Central Scanning, and even small parts like the arm rest and gearshift gater. http://www.prototrim.com

The second generally reported concern is the height of the front seats, and a fix for that comes from JCR Developments, offering lower seat frames to adjust the height and rake of the front seats. http://www.jcr-developments.com/ford/...)

Next is going to be a dramatic change to the exterior with the installation of the full Ventus Veloce carbon fibre aero kit! This will includes parts such as the bonnet, grille, fog lamp inserts, splitter, lower lip, side skirts, rear wing and diffuser as seen at Dub Customs ahead of the install. https://www.ventusveloce.com/collecti...

This is just the beginning as we head towards the full project!

Thanks for watching, Tim

The Polestar 1 Has Cracked Future Tech! | FIRST DRIVE
Shmee150

Published on Jul 12, 2018
Polestar are bringing the future! The new Polestar 1 makes its dynamic debut at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed and I'm lucky enough to jump on board the prototype for quite literally its first ever drive! After checking out the prototype Polestar 1 before joining for the ride on track, and then lastly taking a look at the full near-production car to discover more about it.

The Polestar 1 offers new technology in many ways, it's a hybrid with around 600hp that is pitched as being electric first and petrol second. Not only that but they will also be offering it for sale via an optional subscription service, when sales start next year. Approximately it'll come in at around £115,000 and up to 500 per year will be built in total.

A big thanks to Polestar for the opportunity to film this video and join them for the first ride with Joakim. I think it's very exciting what they have in the works for the future and will be intrigued to see as they develop.

Thanks for watching, Tim

The mad science of rebound in car crashes | Auto Expert John Cadogan
AutoExpertTV

Published on Jul 15, 2018
EDIT: @6:46, I meant 'elastic zone'. Sorry - zigged when I should have zagged, conversationally. Apologies.

Coming up: We crack the kooky code of crashes, and answer last episode’s mad metallurgy quiz. Plus, I’ll use that mad science to explain why stamping sheetmetal is black magic, and learn you how to become a Jedi master of nuts and bolts.

Last episode I asked you to explain why cars rebound off the wall in crash tests. After all, the car is designed to crumple, right? The crumpling absorbs the kinetic energy. So if the energy gets absorbed, why the bounce?

Some people, of course, tried for a correct answer, and missed the target, emphatically.

"A deformable barrier on the test..." iVlogBuzz

That does not explain the bounce - the deformable blue face is just a crushable aluminium honeycomb that’s there to simulate the crushable face of a car you have a clipping head-on with. The car would still bounce if all it hit was bare concrete.

"Equal and opposite reaction" - Peter harper

Newton’s third law was very popular in the answers - but this is true of all collisions. During the collision the force the car exerts on the block equals the force the block exerts on the car. It doesn’t account for the ‘why’ of the bounce.

"The concrete block will also have some elasticity." - Equiluxe1

Totally incorrect. The block is chosen specifically for its non-participatory properties. It’s completely unaffected by the collision for all non-trivial analysis.

"The more I look at it the more convinced I am that the front tyre is a major contributor to the bounce back." - Gabriel Rd

I guess it does push back a bit - but also only a trivial factor. The car would still bounce, about the same, if you threw it at the wall minus the tyres.

"isn't inertia part of the energy that cannot be lost?" - Kevin Reid

No - it’s not - inertia is a property intrinsic to everything with mass. It’s like this: a two-kilo brick is weightless in space, right? But if you throw it at someone’s head - in the International Space Station, and it hits them, it’s still going to be deadly, potentially. The reason is: Inertia.

"Conservation of momentum." - David P

Clearly the momentum of the car is not conserved. It doesn’t bounce off at the same speed, and it’s moving in a different direction. So that’s absolutely not it. And yeah, conservation of momentum is universal (at least in Newton’s universe) but where you draw the boundaries for your system really matters.

Here’s the answer to why the car rebounds - the full answer, supported by applied science.

The bounce occurs because of the overall elasticity of the entire structure of the car. The bits that are smashed and permanently deformed, plus the bits that are not - like the passenger cell, hopefully, the better to leave you shaken but not shredded in the aftermath.

The entire structure is compressed by the massive inertial load of the crash. Some of it permanently and some of it not. I think we can all agree on that.

To some extent, the structure is like a giant spring. Some of the kinetic energy that is not absorbed by crumpling parts of the car permanently is stored in the elastic strain of the structure.

When the car slows down enough, its acceleration tapers off, the inertial load into the wall drops, and the defacto spring of the structure unloads.

That’s what pushes the car back off the wall. It’s important to understand that the bits that are permanently bent, and the bits that are only elastically deformed, both unload elastically - like springs.

So if you told me it was just the passenger safety cell unloading, you were absolutely on the right track with elasticity, but only halfway there.

The crumple zones stay bent, but when the inertial load comes off, they unload elastically too.

The Koenigsegg Regera Completes the World's Best Supercar Parking!
Shmee150

Published on Jul 14, 2018
Welcome to the World's most expensive supercar car park! The supercar paddock at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is home to the very latest and greatest from the supercar world; an encyclopedia of them all. From the likes of the LaFerrari Aperta and Centenario to the McLaren Senna and Koenigsegg Regera with everyhing in between. There are also new launches to see including the P1 GT, Italdesign GT-R50, Aston Martin Vantage V600, Singer DLS and Brabham BT62, it's all here!

Kicking off with a walk around the main supercar paddock the endless rows of special cars include the likes of the DBS Superleggera, FXX K Evo, Ford GT, Apollo IE, Italdesign Zerouno, it just goes on. Then it's over to the First Glance paddock to explore the BMW M850i, M Performance Parts Concept, the Toyota A90 Supra concept and the AMG GT 4-door 63S.

With so much to see, it's almost impossible to choose a favourite, but the granddaddy of them for me - the McLaren F1 - lies around the corner. What is your top choice though?

Thanks for watching, Tim

THIS is Why I'm Buying a Ford GT!
Shmee150

Published on Jul 15, 2018
The anticipation for the arrival of my Ford GT is building, and in the mean time Ford invited me to jump into their GT with Andy Priaulx for a run up the Goodwood hillclimb! Blasting flat out, it's an easy reminder why the car is so truly special - I cannot wait!

Getting started in the Supercar Paddock at the Festival of Speed, it's straight into the car with Andy to head on out and queue for our slot on the track. With some quick highlights and a demo of putting the car into Race Mode, it's then straight out to the start line. With the car offering 656hp from the 3.5l twin turbo V6, and some incredible aero, it's immensely capable and Andy didn't hold back, with a full launch control and a very quick run to the top!

Andy is also one of the other UK customers for the GT and you can see more updates from him and what it's like racing with the Ford Chip Ganassi race team on his page: https://www.instagram.com/andypriaulxmbe

Thanks for watching, Tim

Something a little different. I had to get out of the house after this week of housebound cold/flu. We and our neighbors went to the Bud Plant Show in Merrimack, NH. It was put on by the Mustang club of New Hampshire. Needless to say there were a lot of Mustangs, including ours.
