A Tiny Houes from Peru is Absolutely Amazing Harmony With the Surrounding Tones of Nature
Tiny House Lover

Published on Nov 17, 2017
This home from Peru is absolutely amazing. Impressing with its complexity and fine care for detail, the Casa Chontay will become your favorite shortly. Designed by Marina Vella Arquitectos, the residence is not only a beautiful but also a sustainable building. The use of natural materials is present throughout the two independent volumes. One other thing is the fact that they’re both encircled by vegetation, making a logical connection with the surrounding natural environment. All in all, Casa Chontay is a superb build with nice scenery in which to blend. Just relax by looking at the photos provided here. They will surely do all the convincing.

A Beautiful Garden Home, Must See Immediately in the United States | Tiny House Ideas
Tiny House Lover

Published on Nov 16, 2017
Wisconsin welcomes another impressively beautiful passive home. This type of house is not new to the world and the United States. But with its 970 square feet and the fact it consumes less energy than a hair dryer, it definitely stands out! Proud owner Sonya Newenhouse says she hardly felt the harsh winter. With an average of 68 – 86 degrees Fahrenheit inside during the freezing Wisconsin months, we would totally agree! And remember: meanwhile it was up to 90 percent more efficient than the standard home. Besides the efficient energy use, you have bright colors mixed together with modern furniture to inspire you in every moment of the day. Take a virtual tour to experience what it would look like to live in such a beautiful example of modern architecture.

Average Japanese House - Inside the Home of a Typical Tokyo Family

This is an inside look of a typical Japanese family's house in Tokyo Japan. This is a very common home in Tokyo. Unlike many people who rent Tokyo Apartments, this is a rented Tokyo House. The design of the Tokyo Home is very similar to other Japan homes except maybe the basement and attic.

From Australian Based Design Firm, Contained, Is This 20 Square Foot a Portable Hotel Room
Tiny House Lover

Published on Nov 26, 2017
Portable Hotel Room by Contained
From Australian-based design firm, Contained, is this 20-foot shipping container repurposed into a portable hotel room. The container is easy to ship nearly anywhere in the world and can quickly open into an individual hotel room.

The 20-foot container has a slide-out queen size bedroom, a living room with herringbone flooring, and a dark color palette. With its folding glass wall and large windows, the room has plenty of natural light to offset the darker colors.

A small kitchenette and bathroom with subway tile shower and toilet provide similar amenities to a traditional hotel room.

Contained converts shipping containers into luxury boutique accommodations, contemporary offices, and entertainment units including bars, restaurants, and boutiques. For more information on what they can design, visit their website.

Amplified Tiny House has Main House is 400 Square Feet and 160 Square Foot Mobile Recording Studio
Tiny House Lover

Published on Nov 26, 2017
Amplified Tiny House
Built for violinist Asha Mevlana of The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the Amplified Tiny House is a musician’s dream tiny house. The main house is 400-square-feet and built on a foundation, while the 160-square-foot mobile recording studio was built on a tiny house trailer. The studio is sound proof, has outdoor waterproof speakers, and was built to look like a giant amp! The huge composite deck creates the perfect performance space for Asha and local bands in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The Amplified Tiny House was featured on Season 4, Episode 9 of Tiny House Nation and was a collaborative build between the THN team and Vickery Construction.

The exterior blends Brazilian Abaco hardwood and black corrugated metal siding, giving it a sleek, modern finish. Large glass garage doors on the main house and studio open the spaces onto the large deck.

Inside the tiny house is a large kitchen with white shaker style cabinets, black silestone counters, farmhouse sink, four burner range, white subway tile backsplash, and a dishwasher. The countertop extends across the front wall, providing a bar area that seats four people in front of windows.

One of Zack Giffin’s surprises was building a pot rack with a gear system made from bicycle parts, which raises and lowers the rack. He also made a chest that opens to reveal an editing studio with dual monitors.

For more information about the Amplified Tiny House, you can visit Asha Mevlana’s website.

The original tiny house was designed by Brian Crabb at VIVA Collectiv and photography credits go to Don Shreve.

Notch House: Victorian Terraced House Notched and Extended | Small House Design
Ideas
Tiny House Lover

Published on Nov 21, 2017
The Victorian semi-detached terraced house has been notched out and extended to the rear to create a generous kitchen, dining and living space with carefully placed glazed voids to link the interior with elements of the garden. The extension has been expressed as a lightweight pavilion extruded out from the main house, linking heavier exposed masonry elements and extending into the garden as a canopy overhanging the patio

A pocket planter on the south facing side elevation is the first point of focus from the entrance hall; as you work your way through the house the view is opened up to the garden to the rear through large slimline sliding doors. The two storey rear closet wing has been carved away on the ground floor leaving a pair of brick columns to frame the dining room and pocket courtyard garden.

A concrete floor extends from inside to form an external patio area whilst light oak joinery to the kitchen and walls adds warmth and complements the exposed brickwork.

Paris home-within-home: metal core adds space to modern loft
Kirsten Dirksen

Published on Dec 3, 2017
To preserve the open, industrial feel of a 1920s industrial loft in Paris' 11th arrondissement, architect Alex Delaunay inserted a pre-fab island into the center. The golden aluminium-clad home-within-a-home adds bedrooms and a bathroom without the need for adding walls to the stripped-down, raw concrete space.

Twelve of the 40 tall aluminum panels are operable shutters or doors mounted on metal frames and rails allowing for natural light to enter the bedroom and bathroom filtered through slats in the polycarbonate panels.

A Trip to The Bronx, New York City
Myblockny

Published on Dec 6, 2017
I get daily requests from viewers to visit the Bronx.
In this video I visited Mott Haven, a neighborhood in the Bronx that is super close to Manhattan.
Many parts of the Bronx has flourished over the past few years due to its low property prices, and Mott Haven has been particularly attractive for its fantastic location.
I wanted to show more parts of the Bronx in this video, but sadly it was raining a lot and by 4pm the sun disappeared.
More visits to the Bronx are coming soon.

Young Woman's Off-Grid Green Built Tiny House Designed For a Sustainable Future
Living Big In A Tiny House

Published on Dec 8, 2017
This beautiful tiny house is constructed with a whole lot of heart and some wonderful sustainable materials. When Isabelle Nagel-Brice decided to build a tiny home for herself, she realised that for the cost of two years rent in Colorado she would be able to pay for the materials to build her own tiny home on wheels.

Become a Living Big Patron: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig

The result of her efforts is an incredible green-built tiny home which has been constructed entirely of eco-friendly materials which can all be recycled or will bio degrade at the end of the buildings life. The home is designed to be off-the-grid, with solar panels soon to be added to her set-up and is packed full of reclaimed and healthy materials.

What a Normal Apartment in Japan Looks Like - $2000 a MONTH for a Closet?

Hey Laowinners!

What does a normal apartment in Japan look like? Well, today we stay at one and show you guys how people in Tokyo live. It's small. Expensive. Clean. And compared to apartments in China, quite well made and charming. Japan is one of the most crowded countries in the world, but it makes up for it by using it's space as efficiently as possible.

Tiny home deploys rooms and furniture from walls as required
Kirsten Dirksen

Published on Dec 24, 2017
All of the furniture and rooms in Leonardo Di Chiara’s tiny house fold, swing and pivot into the walls so when closed the space is absent of color, like a whiteboard perfect for the creative process of a young architect. Calling it aVOID in reference to the hollow shell it can morph into, Di Chiara says it’s more aspirational than a reflection of his not-yet-hyper-minimalist lifestyle,

He wanted an uncluttered lifestyle but he also wanted to be mobile and to live in a big city. His solution, to build a row house on wheels. Di Chiara has currently wedged his row house between two tiny houses on the campus of the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin where Van Bo Le-Mentzel, designer of the "one square meter" house, has organized a tiny living experiment.

Di Chiara hopes to continue the experimenting when he moves to Milan. His idea is to create a prototype for a Migratory Neighborhood that could be replicated across Europe so urban nomads like himself could find temporary places to park their homes in schools (during the summer), parks (in winter), abandoned lots, etc. He sees it as a win win for cities eager to keep eyes on the street in isolated or temporarily unused parts of town.

Rust Belt rebirth: a $17,500 Cincinnati old home renewal
Kirsten Dirksen

Published on Jun 28, 2015
It’s become difficult to afford urban living in places like San Francisco, New York or even Portland, but there is an alternative. In Rust Belt cities like Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Cincinnati, you can buy or rent for about 1/10th the price.

“They’re all much better than people in California imagine,” blog Johnny Sanphillippo who has spent significant time interviewing people in this part of the country. “I’m a huge fan of the city of Cincinnati. I love the magnificent architecture, the cool people, and the gorgeous natural beauty that surrounds the city. And I’m incredibly excited that many of the best historic neighborhoods are beginning to come back to life after a fifty year slumber brought on by middle class exodus to the suburbs, deindustrialization, and general neglect. There’s a serious pent up market demand for vibrant, mixed use, walkable neighborhoods all across the country with shockingly little supply. We just haven’t built places like this since World War II and there’s a hunger for it in the real estate market.”

In this video, Sanphillippo visits Mike Uhlenhake who bought his historic row house in the now-trendy Over-The-Rhine neighborhood for $17,500 (it was a burnt out shell on the “condemned list”). He fixed it up himself for a grand total of $90,000. Today he lives upstairs with a roommate and rents out the bottom floor for extra income.

Before: 19th Century $1-building; Now: luxury house/pizzeria
Kirsten Dirksen

Published on Apr 19, 2015
In 1850, Cincinnati was the second densest city in the country, but in the last century as residents began their flight to the suburbs neighborhoods lost population and in some spots buildings were abandoned.

Walnut Hills was once considered Cincinnati’s second downtown, but in the last century the area fell on hard times. When the historic firehouse burnt down in 1977, it was left to crumble for over 3 decades. A couple years ago developer Kent Hardman bought the building from the city for $1.

Hardman spent heavily to bring the building back to life- it’s now his loft apartment upstairs and a pizzeria downstairs- and he says he’ll only “break even” with his investment, but he’s more interested in helping turn the entire neighborhood around. He invested in the building next door and vacant buildings across the street and hopes that traffic to the pizza parlor will bring some life back to these blocks.

Johnny Sanphillippo of http://granolashotgun.com filmed this story. On his blog, he writes about shoestring pre-vitalization: "a new generation is now beginning to rediscover neighborhoods like Walnut Hills and the city of Cincinnati understands that market demand is aligned with the existing building stock and historic urban fabric. "

Oldest US mall blends old/modern with 225-sq-ft micro lofts
Kirsten Dirksen

Published on Jan 26, 2015
The Providence Arcade is nearly 2 centuries old, but when Evan Granoff bought it was considered one of the city’s most endangered properties. Realizing that the demand for commercial space would never match that for downtown housing, Granoff decided to convert the upper floors of the country's first indoor mall into tiny loft apartments.

At just 225 square feet, the smallest units would have fallen below the city’s minimum size standard for apartments so Granoff decided to classify his micro-lofts as a rooming house. The Providence rooming house code allows for rooms as small as 80 square feet (single occupancy), as long as they don’t have a cooking facility. Fortunately, for Granoff and tenants, a microwave is not considered a cooking device.

The tiniest units rent for $550 per month, almost half the city average, and all of them rented out almost immediately (there’s now a waiting list). Many of the tenants don’t spend a lot of time at home. We talked to Naz Karim, a doctor who works emergency room shifts, and plans to spend much of the year on a fellowship in Africa and Sharon Kinnier who uses the loft for when she’s working in a Providence lab formulating organic cosmetics (she spends the rest of the time with her husband in Washington D.C.).

The bottom floor of the mall is still commercial, but Granoff limits it to micro retail so no chains and they’re all focused on fashion and art design. We stopped in at nude boutique where Amy Stetkiewicz, one of the 6 local designers, was closing up shop downstairs from her micro loft.

"Karina" A Small Cottage Was Design by Karen DeLucas in Madison Valley | Small House Design Ideas
Tiny House Lover

Published on Dec 22, 2017
The kitchen bar top is a major feature of the design of the Karina kitchen and one of the trickiest to pull off cohesively because there are many different materials coming together as well as it being a part of 3 rooms. We chose Lyptus butcher block for the counter top because of it's warmth and similar richness as the floor.
We could have continued the drywall onto the 1/2 wall from the living room side, but I wanted to continue the front paneling of the peninsula around the side.

To keep costs down and to make it more simple to build, we did not wrap the Lyptus top into a L shape, but changed materials to a painted trim top. The 1" trim top dies into the 1-1/2" thick Lyptus, while allowing the skirt trim directly below to wrap and be continuous to become like a window sill detail as it goes into the living room.

That same skirt trim turns the corner and then dies into the backsplash. The backsplash is the Chroma countertop material. We changed the outlet color to black and used stainless steel covers to better go with the counter & appliances.

Getting the right height was important...one for perch-ability (see the last photo), but also mechanically so that outlets could be included in the backsplash. Neil built a 41" high wall + the 1-1/2" counter. This is the right height to lean against. Even though there is enough overhang to pull a bar stool up to it, we thought of it more as a lean-against counter and buffet. It also hides dishes and the counter when sitting in the dining area and living.

Building an Alaskan log cabin
Alaska Film Archives

Published on Nov 15, 2017
John Baker narrates a film in which he builds a log cabin from the ground up in the northern Southcentral region of Alaska. He and his trapping partner Gene Lanzaro clear a site for the cabin, burn brush, peel and cut notches in logs, builds walls, install the roof and a window, assemble a chimney for the stove, collect water from a nearby creek, and haul firewood with help from John's dog Queenie. John Baker filmed the sequence in 1965 and added narration in about 2000 (Color/Sound/16mm film).

This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-16367 from the John Baker collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. For more information please contact the Alaska Film Archives.

Man Builds Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Canadian Wilderness
My Self Reliance

Published on Dec 29, 2017
Finally, one video showing the entire build process from the cutting of the first tree to the laying of the last floor board - no food, no talking, no visitors, just carpentry, bushcraft, timber framing, blood, sweat and tears.
In late April, I cut the first balsam fir tree down on the property near Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Next, from June until August, I collected all of the building materials and fabricated the cabin using saddle notches in the corners. I cleared the land in August, laid down gravel for a pad and began erecting the off grid log cabin. By September, the walls were done and I started on the roof framing in October.
In November, I burned the roof boards with shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood. Against convention, I installed the roof in board and batten fashion, using my roofing background to come up with techniques to keep the cabin watertight.
Next, I moved inside where I installed a Vermont Castings wood stove on top of a limestone flagstone floor, which extended from the doorway to the center of the cabin underneath the fireplace.
For the rest of the floor, I framed it using 2x4 and 2x6 red pine boards and then installed 2x6x10' boards, which I burned using the same shou sugi ban technique.
Now in December, I chinked the walls with moss and clay and have been spending a lot of time in the cabin, starting rustic furniture made with materials from the surrounding forest.

A Beautiful Home With Just Cozy Living
Tiny House Lover

Published on Dec 29, 2017
The porch, the wood, the windows, the light — what a great home to roam in

Savoring the simplest of moments can be a glorious experience. In Bluffton, S.C., they know a thing or two about that, acknowledging its importance in the homes they craft. No smart host wants to be out of the loop while friends sip, laugh or play a game. And what better way to persuade people to make themselves at home than to offer a sprawling porch, plump chairs and a kitchen open to all?
This design gives a nod to those Southern nights one gives up some precious sleep to swing on the porch, drink sweet tea and shuffle a deck of cards until the wee hours. Soft, cushy pillows, and wood and wicker elements fit the mood.

If the cool breeze makes one scoot inside, a cozy fire and welcoming seating await. The doors and front and side windows ensure the starlight is never far off. The living area is simply an extension of the covered porch. In other words ... divine.

When the hunger pangs hit, no need to go too far. The open space here doesn't feel like a concept, just cozy living. The wood ceiling and walls give the room a soothing sense of infinity.

One can snack and chat with the chef with this setup. And yes, it is easy to amble back and forth from the counter to the table and even assist the cook if one so desires.

Behind the counter a farmhouse sink and large working space make it easy for one or more to concoct creations but still be in the thick of things. A bar tucked away to the side is both tidy and accessible. Who wouldn't want one of those?

Balancing cooking and chopping and plating a meal? No problem in this efficient kitchen, where storage is plentiful but not more than one needs. And of course, it is simple to do cleanup, too.

When slumber calls, it feels as if nothing can disturb this bed chamber. Neutral tones let all the parts of the brain slow down their processing and guide you to a safe haven. Sweet dreams!

Little windows in the bathroom add to the gleaming effect and how fun to splash around in the vintage-style bathtub. Better bring a good book.

Few children's rooms tug on the heartstrings of an adult, but this is one of them. A bed under the window, shelving tucked into the slanting ceiling and a hideaway room to play in? What a charming way to grow up.

Everyone seems to want a lot of devices and toys to amuse themselves, but finding a perfect place to call home and be yourself? It's the only way to live.
If the charms of this home delight you, share it with some friends!
