Carl Gustav m/42: A 20mm Recoilless Antitank Rifle
Forgotten Weapons

Published on Apr 21, 2017
https://www.rockislandauction.com/det...

The Swedish Pansarvärnsgevär fm/42 made by the Carl Gustav company was an interesting early hybrid antitank weapon - a recoilless rifle firing solid armor-piercing projectiles. It used a 20x180mm case, propelling the 108g (1650gr) bullet at 950 m/s (3150 fps). This was capable of perforating 40mm of perpendicular armor plate at 100m (a high explosive projectile was also made). This was on the high end of armor penetration for anti-tank rifles, and the m/42 was able to do this with a weapon weighing just 11.7kg (25 lb) - less than a quarter of a comparable 20mm conventional rifle.

This was possible because of its recoilless design - upon firing, the rear end of the cartridge case would blow out and vent out the back of the weapon, instead of being firmly sealed like a conventional rifle. This created a counter balancing recoil impulse which prevented the gun and shooter from having to absorb the full recoil energy produced by a heavy bullet launching off at high velocity. The tradeoff was that much of the potential energy of firing was wasted venting out the back instead of pushing the bullet forward, which is why the cartridge case was so oversized.

About a thousand of the guns were made by the end of World War 2, at which time even it had been made quite thoroughly obsolete by the rapidly increasing thickness of tank armor. It would, however, be the stepping-stone to the m/48 Carl Gustav 84mm recoilless rifle, which used a shaped charge warhead to perforate armor with a stream of molten melt instead of relying on velocity of a hardened projectile.

Here is one being fired: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUoBb...

Ultimate Anti-Tank Weapon: FGM-148 Javelin Missile in Action
War Clashes

Published on May 28, 2017
US Soldiers/Marines fire an FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile during live fire training exercise.

The FGM-148 Javelin is an American man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank missile fielded to replace the M47 Dragon anti-tank missile in US service. It uses an automatic infrared guidance that allows the user to seek cover immediately after launch, as opposed to wired guided systems, like the Dragon, where the user has to actively guide the weapon throughout the engagement.

RUSSIA'S OLD TANK KILLER STILL A THREAT NATO || WARTHOG 2017
Warthog Defense

Published on Jun 8, 2017
For this weapon, age is just a number.

One of the most iconic weapons of war ever made arose from Soviet experiences in World War II, when Red Army infantry had no answer to invading German panzers. Simple and effective, the broomlike RPG-7 became one of the most effective antitank weapons of the postwar period. Widely exported, the “RPG” became a symbol of revolution and terror, fielded by armies and guerrillas from Berlin to Phnom Penh.

At one time in America you could order a 20mm Solothurn or Lahti anti-tank rifle and a case of ammo for $100 and have it delivered to your door.

The Model SS41 - A Czech Bullpup Anti-Tank Rifle for the SS

The SS41 was a bullpup, bolt action antitank rifle manufactured in small numbers by CZ for the SS. contrary to common assumption, the SS were not a part of the standard German military arms procurement system, and were forced to scrounge for their weapons from other sources. Czech factories were one of the more popular sources, as smaller production lines could escape being integrated into Wehrmacht oversight and were able to contract privately with groups like the SS (the ZK383 as used by the SS is another example of this).

The Model 41 had been in development by the Czech military when the Germans occupied, and it was adapted to the German Patrone 318 cartridge for this production run. That cartridge was also used in the PzB-39, and fired a 220 grain tungsten-cored bullet at 4000 fps - although even this extremely high velocity only allowed it to defeat 30mm of vertical armor at 100m. As with the other antitank rifles of WW2, it would obsolete almost as soon as it was introduced, although it did remain useful for attacking emplaced positions and light armored vehicles (much like the Soviet PTRD and PTRS rifles).

Only a few thousand of the SS41 were manufactured, and they served primarily on the Eastern Front. As a result very few exist in American collections, and this is a particularly excellent example. Thanks to the Institute of Military Technology for allowing me to have access to this very cool AT rifle and bring it to you! Check them out at:

It's kind of funny seeing those old 20mm "anti tank" rifles. They wouldn't dent the armor of a MBT today. They'd probably mess up a Humvee or Stryker though...

U.S. Rifle Grenades of WWII
TFB TV

Published on Jul 12, 2017
Corey joined us for a talk about rifle grenades and launchers in use by U.S. Infantrymen during the Second World War. Particularly we focused on the M1 Launcher for the M1903 Springfield rifle, however we also discussed some of the aspects of the M7 Launcher for the M1 Garand, and a very similar one for the M1 Carbine.

The rifle grenade as an HE solution filled the range gap between a hand grenade, and a 60mm mortar. Often forgotten about when discussing Second World War small arms, the rifle grenade played an important role in a squad's firepower and in what it could bring to bear against a fortified enemy position.

Unfortunately, the grenades we had on hand weren't live and at a demolition range, or else that would be a fantastic test. For the video we were able to use two rubber dummies, and one original WWII dummy that we didn't actually fire.

Bazooka Business: How the Famous Anti-Tank Weapon Worked
TFB TV

Published on Jul 19, 2017
The 2.36 inch M1A1 "Bazooka" entered service midway through the Second World War in the U.S. campaign in North Africa. From there it become widely liked that the rocket launcher was issued at the infantry platoon level and used with much success against German and Japanese enemy positions and armor for the remainder of the war, of course barring the Tiger and Panther tanks employed on the Western Front. Although seemingly a well-thought out weapon system, the "Bazooka" is as rudimentary as a Walmart Potato Gun. Made from simple tubing, wooden furniture, wrapped wire, a heat shield, and sights that would make Browning himself blush, the weapon was very intuitive to operate and maintain. Later versions incorporated a tube that could be folded in half, and a 3.5 inch rocket. This saw much usage in the Korean War as a the M20 Launcher.

BGM-71 TOW Anti-Tank Guided Missile in Action - Target Shooting Live-Fire
War Clashes

Published on Sep 9, 2017
U.S. Soldiers train with the TOW missile system in order to validate operational readiness utilizing anti-armor weapons systems.

The BGM-71 TOW is an American anti-tank missile. TOW replaced much smaller missiles like the SS.10 and ENTAC, offering roughly twice the effective range, a more powerful warhead, and a greatly improved semi-automatic guidance system that could also be equipped with infrared cameras for night time use.

First produced in 1970, the TOW is one of the most widely used anti-tank guided missiles. It can be found in a wide variety of manually carried and vehicle mounted forms, as well as widespread use on helicopters. Originally designed by Hughes Aircraft in the 1960s, the weapon is currently produced by Raytheon.

M20A1B1 Super Bazooka - It's a Super Bazooka. Need I Say More?
Forgotten Weapons

Published on Oct 28, 2017
https://jamesdjulia.com/item/52717-1-...

The US was one of the few major military powers that went into World War II without a substantial infantry antitank weapon. Most countries had an antitank rifle of some sort, but the US just had some marginal antitank rifle grenades. That was rectified in late 1942 when the M1 Rocket Launcher - aka the Bazooka - was introduced. Using a 2.36” shaped charge warhead, it was able to penetrate about 4.7 inches of armor, which was effective through most of the war. A larger version went into development in 1943 though, because it was clear that the M1 would soon become obsolete.

The 3.5” M20 Super Bazooka was adopted in late 1945 and put into production in 1948, with it s first combat use coming in the Korean War. It was much more powerful, capable of penetrating 11 inches of armor plate. The launchers itself weighed just 13 pounds, with each rocket adding another 8.9 pounds. This, and the updated M20A1, would serve as the main US infantry antitank weapon until replaced by the 90mm recoilless rifle in the 1960s.

PIAT: Britain's Answer to the Anti-Tank Rifle Problem
Forgotten Weapons

Published on Nov 25, 2017
https://www.rockislandauction.com/det...

The British began World War Two with the Boys antitank rifle, but like all antitank rifles it rather quickly became obsolete. The replacement for it was adopted in 1942 as the PIAT - Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank. This was a unique sort of weapon which fired a 3 pound (~1.35kg) hollow charge projectile using a combination of a massive spring and a firing charge much like a rifle grenade blank cartridge - a spigot mortar, really. The large (3.25", 83mm) projectile was able to defeat almost any tank that would be developed during the war, as it could burn through 3-4 inches of hardened armor. However, it had a terrifyingly short effective range - 110 yards on paper and more like 50 yards in practice.

The PIAT would recock itself upon firing, but the initial cocking was something like a crossbow, requiring the shooter to brace their feet on the buttplate and pull the body of the weapon upwards, compressing the 200 pound (90kg) mainspring. When fired, the weapon has a pretty harsh recoil, although it did not have any flash or backblast like the American Bazooka did. By the end of the war more 115,000 PIATs had been made, and they would serve the British military into the 1950s, when they were replaced with more traditional rocket launchers.

American Military New Bunker Buster - M3E1 MAAWS
Matsimus

Published on Jan 4, 2018
The Marine Corps is getting ready to equip every infantry squad with a Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle for added range and firepower.

And further out, officials are weighing the possibility of swapping out the Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon, or SMAW, in combat engineer squads to give troops more options for busting enemy bunkers.

The Corps is planning to collaborate with the Army to purchase the M3E1 Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapons System, or MAAWS, a new version of the 84mm Carl Gustaf made to be lighter, more compact and easier to wield.

Hope you enjoy!!

Matsimus

Published on Jan 15, 2018
The Spike Family consists of missiles suited for several platforms, multiple ranges and a variety of targets. The Spike missile system is manufactured and marketed by the Israeli Company Rafael. Spike is a fourth generation man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile with tandem-charged HEAT warhead. The Spike missile can be also used on ship. SPIKE-ER Missile will be operated from dedicated station remotely and both operators (Boat navigator/steerer and missile operator) will be able to coordinate their action optimally – visual and hearing contact available. The SPIKE-ER can be installed in the AH-1S Cobra, Agusta A-129, MD-500 Defenders, Gazelle, Mi-24 Hind and many more aircraft or helicopter. All of the Spike Family members have a low Life Cycle Cost, due to high reliability and operational, logistic support and production commonality between members.

Hope you enjoy!!

HOW TO STOP A TANK IN ITS TRACKS, JUST IN CASE || WARTHOG 2018
Warthog Defense

Published on Feb 2, 2018
What with the Russian president invading his neighbors all willy-nilly and interfering in American elections, and the American president wanting more nukes just as soon as he figures out how to use them, NATO figured this was a good time to remind everyone how to stop a tank that just so happens to be rolling through your backyard.

Thanks, NATO!

I saw a photo from France in 1940 where the French blocked a country road by dynamiting all the trees so they fell across the road. Only problem was, there were open fields next to the road, so the Nazi tanks just went around them...all the pretty trees gone, and it didn't slow the Germans down one bit.

M20 75mm Recoilless Rifle: When the Bazooka Just Won't Cut It
Forgotten Weapons

Published on Mar 8, 2018
https://jamesdjulia.com/item/53164-1-...

Note that this is a rewelded action. It should be inspected by a professional before being fired (the firing footage in the video is a different example).

The M20 75mm Recoilless Rifle was developed starting in 1944 as a replacement for the 3.5” bazooka in an antitank role. It was developed and produced in parallel with a 57mm recoilless rifle (the M18), and both entered service in March of 1945, seeing just a slight bit of combat use before the end of World War Two. It would be a mainstay of US troops in the Korean War, however, along with a 105mm recoilless rifle. The M20 fired HE, HEAT, and WP (smoke) rounds, with the projectiles weighing 20-22 pounds (about 10kg) and having muzzle velocities of about 1000 fps (305 m/s). The shaped charge HEAT warhead could penetrate about 4” (100mm) of armor, and had an effective range of about 400 yards. The HE warhead could be effectively used out to about 1000 yards, and the gun was equipped with both direct fire and indirect fire optical sights in order to effectively use both types of ammunition.

By the Vietnam War, the M20 was on its way out, as were recoilless rifles in general - they were being replaced with wire-guided missiles for antitank use. However, the M20 remains in service today for avalanche control in many Western states - a neat repurposing of obsolete weaponry!
