The asteroid is called 16 Psyche. It is a massive chunk of precious metals that include platinum, gold as well as iron and nickel.

According to Science Alert, the 16 Psyche asteroid contains $10,000 quadrillion of iron alone. If NASA could find a way to mine the minerals of the asteroid and bring these back to Earth, it would collapse the global economy...

The 16 Psyche asteroid orbits the Sun between the planets Mars and Jupiter.

The asteroid measures 240 km (149 miles) in diameter. It is nowhere near as large as some other known asteroids in the asteroid belt. The largest asteroid in the belt is Ceres and it has 945 km (587 miles). But Psyche is by far the largest exposed iron metal body in the asteroid belt.

How could it collapse an economy that isn't based on anything? Hell ... it might one day help actually balance the books.

Ok, scrap steel is paying what? 2 bucks a hundred?
And it will take $1,000,000 Quadrillion of rocket fuel to bring home $10,000 quadrillion of iron.
Oh those wacky scientists... what will they come up with next?

Noticed the article didn't mention silver content.
Guess that's not even worth mentioning since iron ore is more valuable than that stuff...

Just change its orbit so it crashes into a shallow sea here on earth. Simple. What could go wrong...

Imagine, hoax and staged presentation.
Coming from a species on a planet covered 3/4 by water,
under which lies more resources than some piddly flying space rock,
but we avoid solution and fantasize our brilliance.
Amazing how retarded western civilization appears in hindsight.
Foresight as well for those with IQ and rational thought process.

By the way, we have enough iron mined to drop price for decades, not even considering recycling.

"IF" is the operative word here...

Yeah... spendy iron ore! That was my first thought.

They have to... congress are the only one dumb enough to buy the line.

That's why I'm buying bitcoin. No asteroid up there where people can mine bitcoins.

Collapse the global economy? Just the opposite -- mining it could enable a brand new era of human advancement and prosperity. It's resource scarcity, not abundance, that crashes economies. This asteroid might even serve as a starting point for building our very own Dyson sphere.

Yea, just imagine if by mining an asteroid we could get more gold than the Earth has iron. We could make everything out of gold. It'd start being used like copper is today.

It's resource scarcity, not abundance, that crashes economies.
I think what they are talking about is how it would affect all the current big-money investors if these markets were suddenly flooded with cheap product. It'd wipe 'em out, but as you state, it would in the long run be great for society.

Unless every coin you hold is same both sides; resource abundance also crashes economic sectors aka supply surplus.
Many factors result in such.
Every coin regardless of image, still has two sides.
Similar to firearms, know both and increase wealth... or time to expend.
