Educated Grease Monkey

Published on Mar 21, 2017
In this video, I go off on a rant about technical schools. This is a must watch video for those that are thinking of going to school to becaome an automotive technician/mechanic. Like & Share.

------

My name is Carlos M. DeOro & I started the Educated Grease Monkey Channel to not only teach anyone who wants to learn about cars but to create a place where anyone can come and just be a gear head.

Why can I provide you with this information? What the hell do I know? Right?? Well, Lets start with the 14 ASE certifications that makes me a Master ASE Automotive Technician. I have 12 Years of experience in the automotive industry. I used to own my own automotive repair facility. I've taught at multiple technical schools. My many years at the Chevy dealerships made me a GM Certified Master Technician. Now a days I make my money with my online store. Entreprenuership is in my blood but my passion has always been cars. Do not go in debt to become an auto tech.
It's a tough enough gig as it is with tool purchases, training and the physical demands.
Apprentice at a dealership on a car line you think you like and let them train you. If you're motivated and the company sees promise in what you have to offer {good work habits} you can take so many classes at the dealership level it will make your ears spin. After a couple years you can see if you really have the chops or if selling cars or washing them might not be a better fit, but at least NO DEBT.
No love being a tech in my mind. You're working on a quickly depreciating asset with abuse from multiple angles. The customer hates that they have to pay anything to keep their 2 ton missile on the road while it's bleeding "value" by the second. Your boss wonders why it took you so long when the book said it should have been done in 1/2 the time and the manufacturer is changing technologies so fast you can't keep up no matter how hard you try.
Generally there are tire and brake monkeys, lube monkeys, bullshit artists and then the guys who really know what they are doing {far and few between}
If you just have to do it............ reach for the top tier but don't go into debt, buy your quality tools used when and where you can and find a good boss and or a good shop. Work for the typical franchise store or a bad "stealership" and you'll hate your situation more than hot oil dripping in your ear. Good luck.............

Should You Get Into Auto Repair? -ETCG1
ETCG1

Published on Jun 17, 2013
This is one of the questions I get asked the most so I decided to make a video of my response. Should you get into auto repair? Good question, it really depends on you level of commitment and love for the work. I guess the best answer is that it's likely not going to be what you think it will be. So be prepared for that. If you are considering a career in auto repair, consider diesel and fleet work, you might do quite well there. Here's some useful links for you.

How I Would Start As a Mechanic Today, Podcast Episode 27
HumbleMechanic

Published on Dec 19, 2014
For full show notes, hit the blog at: http://humblemechanic.com/?p=4703

Today on the Automotive podcast, I want to talk about how I would get started as a tech, if I was doing it today. I have talked about how I got started on other shows. But I think that if I was going to do it again, I may take a different approach. The internet has given us a huge opportunity to learn for very little or free. That along with training programs at dealers, makes skipping tech school an interesting option.

Today on the Podcast we chat about: Costs of tech school Time investment of tech school Starting at a Jiffy change type place Starting at a small shop Online Learning Dealership Service Express You can start with little time and tool investment Dealership training programs Where Manufacturers lack in training VW's old training program

For what this is worth a Dealer in my area in flyover country near St Louis tends to lay off mechanics when they reach journeyman status and replace them with new graduates. The new graduates he will explain are up to date on the newest electronics and software common to vehicles these days.He sublets out brake, exhaust and other similar low skilled repairs and does keep a few experienced mechanics around for things like automatic transmission repair. Be aware of this type of situation and recognize the fact that one might have to start their own business these days to get decent employment.
By the way I was at my local Sam's the other day getting my tires rotated and balanced and the service writer told me that all of their installers are ASE Certified mechanics. Imagine going to school, getting certified and ending up changing tires and batteries for a living. Not that there is anything wrong with honest work but is it really all worth it to go thru all the training to be stuck at a job that requires no training?

As you know I went to Automotive tech school. I attended Universal Technical Institute in 2002. My experience at automotive tech school was great. If not for tech school I would never have become a mechanic, and wouldn't be doing videos. A lot of you guys have asked me about my experience in tech school, so today we talk about what it was like for me, and what I had to do to attend mechanic school

There is a Home Depot Associte in my town that was a mechanic. He trained at the Ranken Trade School and then was hired by a New Car Auto Dealership. From what he said when he reached Journeyman status he was let go as were other people when they made journeyman staus. He said that they would simply hire another freshly trained apprentice from Ranken at a much lower rate of pay.
I have no idea of the truthfulness or accuracy of what he said but I can certainly envision it.
Just saying for what some hearsay is worth

Lot of places do that. Not just in the automotive trade either.

Should Auto Mechanics be Required to be Licensed?
HumbleMechanic

Published on Aug 18, 2018
In may places auto mechanics or auto technicians are not required to have a license to fix cars. Should we require mechanics to have a license before they can work on cars or trucks? Would forcing mechanics to have a license make things better for mechanics? How is a license different from ASE certification? Today we talk about mechanic license!

It’s Time To Get Serious About the Auto Repair Industry
ETCG1

Published on Aug 27, 2018
**Sponsored Video**
Yes, this is a sponsored video by UTI, but I would make this video sponsored or not.

I get a lot of feedback about the auto repair industry, not all of it good. Some say it’s dead, you can’t make a decent living, and that there are less and less people coming into the field of auto repair.

I’m wondering if that may be wrong. Based on what I’ve seen recently, it seems there may be a lot of opportunity in the auto repair field that hasn’t been previously explored. It might be worth a second look.

Thanks for watching!
