It's a dirty job, but if you are competent you will never be out of work. I have also seen some of them get killed because they did not use proper safety precautions when working on hydraulics or other allied systems.

My best friend is a diesel mechanic. Does very well for himself. With OT he gets about 75k a year plus he is always booked up for side work as well.

Around here 75k is average but you can make more depending on your skills, shop, retail or fleet, and actual field ( trucks, hvy equip, trains, generators or ships / tugs. ) Was pretty good but don't miss it at all.

He knows he could make more but where he is, he is one of the better people they have and they give him a lot of attitude. He has custody of his 2 kids as well so he's always taking a day off for school stuff or sick kid or leaving early or whatever and they let him do what he needs to do and they pay him for it.
