Build your own battery??

Anyone ever build or think of building their own battery?? Lead is dirt cheap, why the heck are batteries so expensive?/

You could use a cooler for the case, pour sheets of lead, not sure what they use to separate the plates, but hell you could build one monster wet cell battery for 50 bucks or so couldnt you??
