TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chinese authorities on Sunday (July 19) blasted a dam on a river in eastern Anhui Province to discharge floodwaters, while the vaunted Three Gorges Dam was hammered with the biggest flood of the year so far.
Communist China's state-run mouthpiece CCTV announced that a dam on the Chuhe River was blown up in order to "alleviate the pressure of flood control" at 2:49 a.m. on Sunday. As waters climbed to historic highs, two successive explosions punctured two holes in the dam in Chuzhou, Quanjiao County, allowing the muddy Chuhe River to pour into flood storage ponds below.
Prior to the blast, the water level at Zhongmiao Station in Chaohu reached 12.83 meters in the morning, surpassing the historic high of 12.80 meters recorded in 1991. A total of 35 rivers and lakes in Anhui alone had reported high water marks exceeding danger levels by noon Saturday (July 18), including the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers, reported China's government-operated Xinhua.
The breaching of the dams is expected to lower the water level of the Chuhe River by 70cm, according to the state-run voicebox Global Times. Deliberately exploding dams and embankments was a tactic used during the massive floods seen in 1998, and it appears that the government is resorting to this practice again as the floodwaters across China this year are already matching or exceeding the levels seen 22 years ago.
Meanwhile, the second major flood of the year was declared on the Yangtze River on Friday (July 17), with the inflow into the Three Gorges Dam reaching 61,000 cubic meters per second by 8 a.m. Saturday. On Sunday evening at 8 p.m., the inflow into the dam dropped by 15,000 cubic meters per second to 46,000.
Xinhua that day then declared that the flood "passed through the Three Gorges Dam smoothly." This was the largest flood to hit the dam so far during this year, with the facility accumulating a total of 14 billion cubic meters of floodwater during this flood season, according to the China Three Gorges Corporation.

Classic communists move. Never learn from your mistakes just stick to the 5 year plan created by some imbecile who pulled the dates out of their rectal orifice.

The dam had issues before it was built. The site has a fault line running through it. The maximum inundation calculated for the watershed was too much for the dam to handle. There were several scandals with the quality of the materials to build the dam. Heck! Irwin Allen could not have dreamed up a better disaster movie.

is this actually a play to try to save their grand pooh bah? The worlds largest dam every created?

thought I read someplace where this one was upstream from that, and could result in such a large surge it could take out the big one

not positive on that though

I fail to see how blowing this damn helps the Three Gorges Dam in any way. Blowing a dam upstream is a bad idea. And if it's a different watershed then there should be no relief

Three Gorges is about 450 miles west of the boom boom site; it has its own problems due to the heavy rainfall across China over the past few months.

I wouldn't count on it shooty, karma seems to be one of those concepts people use to make sense of evil and in some ways to get a sense of justice.

Expert warns China's Three Gorges Dam in danger of collapse
Residents in lower reaches of Yangtze River should brace for evacuation: Chinese hydrologist

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As torrential rains in China continue to wreak havoc on more than 24 provinces, notable Chinese hydrologist Wang Weiluo (王維洛) has questioned the safety of the massive Three Gorges Dam, warning that it could collapse at any moment.
In southern China, regional rainstorms and mudslides that began on June 1 have uprooted more than 7,300 houses and affected nearly eight million people as of Monday morning (June 21). The immediate economic loss is estimated at 20.6 billion RMB (US$2.9 billion) by local officials.
The nonstop downpours have also raised the Chinese public's concerns over the potential bursting of the world's biggest hydropower project. Despite government assurances that the dam is structurally sound, Wang has taken an opposing view and claimed that the facility is not as stable as many have been led to believe, reported New Talk.
Wang pointed out that the dam's design, construction, and quality inspection were all carried out by the same group of people and that the project was finished too quickly. He said that even Chinese Vice Minister of Water Resources Ye Jianchun (葉建春) confessed at a June 10 press conference that water levels of at least 148 rivers in the country have risen above warning thresholds, which proves that the Three Gorges Dam has a limited effect on flood control.
Rather than commenting on the validity of the images showing the dam's warping a year ago, Wang said a more serious concern is the cracks and substandard concrete discovered during its construction. He said a failure of the dam would have catastrophic consequences for individuals residing in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and that they should prepare for evacuation as soon as possible, reported CT Want.
In his interview with Radio France Internationale, the Chinese water expert also criticized the Chinese government and state media for refusing to acknowledge the potential danger of the reservoir. He said that scientists who have spoken the truth have been criminalized by Beijing, resulting in a society with no communication.
According to Chinese stated-owned CNTV, water inside the Three Gorges Dam continues to accumulate and has risen two meters above its flood-prevention level. Although the dam has been hailed by Beijing as one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history, its structural integrity continues to be questioned.

Next thing you know the Chinese will be claiming that Trump has unleashed the USA's secret arsenal of weather weapons on China as payback for the COVID-19 crises, and the lapdog MSM will lap it up.

"Rather than commenting on the validity of the images showing the dam's warping a year ago, Wang said a more serious concern is the cracks and substandard concrete discovered during its construction."

We all have seen the Chin "cities" that have concrete made of library paste. Why should the dam be any different?

And if substandard library paste was FOUND during construction, howcum they did not upgrade the library paste at least to the "loose gravel" level??

Oh. Bribes?

That doggie be comin' home, tail waggin'.

That skeleton be comin' outa dat closet, teeth clickin'.

China has evacuated thousands of residents after a landslide blocked a river and created a barrier lake that threatened to submerge neighboring villages, as large parts of the country reeled under some of the heaviest rainfall in decades. The landslide occurred on Tuesday when 1.5 million cubic meters of earth fell into a tributary of the Yangtze River near the city of Enshi in Hubei province, the Xinhua news agency said, citing local flood control authorities.

Ministry officials said they needed tokeep a close eye on waterlevels at the Three Gorges Dam, which has been storing huge volumes of water in order to ease downstream flood risks and is now 16 meters higher than its official warning level.

how is it, this dam is bulging in both directions?: see just above the top of the red circle?

bows one direction and swells out the other...that's not possible and with this type of distortion, this is beyond any 'failure point...no rebar or mass will last under that type of pressure for very long with a distortion such as is shown in the picture...

Buck: It is hard to see from the POV of that pic. You are looking dang near straight DOWN. My mind keeps telling me that is a road with a humongous wee-waw in it.

But that pic is used because it shows the bend clearly, and you would see hardly anything at all from a horizontal POV.

And you are spot on with your analysis of the seriousness of the wee-waw. Under normal conditions, it would be a deadly serious problem. But the conditions are so far above normal as to be ridiculous:

There is a "Danger -- Dam Limit" line. MUST NOT allow the water to rise above that line, or THE DAM WILL NOT HOLD.

The water is 16 meters above the uttermost top design limit. Now add in what the entire world knows about large scale cement structures made in China.

Wonder what odds they are giving in Vegas?

There was an old video of someone in a Chinese apartment just pushing a rod up into a "concrete" column and it just crumbled out. Wonder if I can find that now. Found an article but video is gone... the guy just pushed that rod into the column and out came some dust.

Therein lies the problem wit most of the construction going on inside China for many years. Every major construction project is taken on as some manner of making the ccp look good in the eyes of their people and the world. So if there are any delays, they take it as an affront instead of figuring out what needs to be done to correct design flaws. Much of the modern infrastructure in China will fail for these reasons. The ccp will work to cover it up. The Three Gorges Dam is sadly one of them. Would have truly been a modern marvel, if they left their pride at home the days they were designing and constructing it. Insist on good quality material and skip the process of cutting corners. If the communists truly had a lick of sense they would know this, but they are focused on destruction, not building.

OK, that got a chuckle out of me. You can have the best design in the world, but when you give it to communists to build, well this is what you should expect.
