Civil rights killings--why didn't they use guns for self-defense?

Here on MLK day, a controversial figure for good and bad, I was thinking about the blacks who have been the victims of violence. I live in an apartment complex probably with more blacks than in the rest of the town. I have a part-time job in a company with more blacks and Hispanics than whites. There is no tolerance for racism; many customers speak with a foreign accent, the customers are more diverse than I have seen elsewhere.

Here's a small list of those killed as black or civil rights victims:

Was it just needless that many of the victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time? Could they have employed better methods?

Had some of them been armed they probably would have beaten any charges following justifiable self-defense. If word had gotten out in the Klan "community" that some of their targets were armed, that may have changed the Klan's aggressive tactics. But they believed in non-violent civil disobedience like Gandhi. https://www.middletownhs.org/ourpages/auto/2011/2/15/61352366/Gandhi.doc
