04. Symphony No. 3 in E Flat Major Eroica, Op. 55 - IV. Finale Allegro molto 36:28

Beethoven's Symphony no. 3, Op. 55, also known as the Eroica (Italian for "heroic"), is a work marking the full arrival of the composer's "middle-period," a series of unprecedented large scale works of emotional depth and structural rigor. Completed in 1804 and performed the following year, it is widely regarded as a mature expression of the style of the late eighteenth century that also exhibits defining features of the romanticism of the nineteenth century. Beethoven had originally conceived of dedicating the symphony to Napoleon, seeing him as an embodiment of the Revolution's ideals. However, after his self proclamation as Emperor he tore up the dedicated score.

Just as much a part of Christmas as Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is a reworking of a collection of his secular festive cantatas to form a single larger work. It was first heard in Leipzig on Christmas Day 1734, and performed in six sections between Christmas Day and Epiphany 1735. Bach wrote similar oratorios for Easter and Ascension, and all re-use existing cantatas. For the oratorio versions however, it wasn’t just a case of cobbling the works together. Bach wrote much new music, especially the choruses, but the core of the work is taken from cantatas nos 213, 214 and 215.

Chorale preludes would have been a feature of any church service in Leipzig over the Christmas period, acting as interludes between the movements of the cantatas and oratorios.

03. Piano Sonata no. 8 in C minor 'Pathetique', Op. 13 - III. Rondo - Allegro 12:08

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13 commonly known as Pathétique (although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named by the publisher, to Beethoven's liking) was published in 1799, though written the year before. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. It is perhaps the earliest of Beethoven's compositions to achieve widespread and enduring popularity. It is widely represented on concert programs and recordings, and it has been incorporated into several works of popular culture. In its entirety, encompassing all three movements, the work takes approximately 19 minutes to perform.

The perfect starting point for exploring Romantic piano music. It features historic recordings of a truly excellent standard, including Blumental with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Helmuth Froschauer, the Orchestra of Radio Luxembourg with Pierre Cao accompanying French pianist Dosse, Boehm with the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra under Siegfried Landau, and Antal Doráti conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Ilse von Alpenheim.

This 40 CD set contains a wealth of 19th century piano concertos written by composers who for some reason or other have been neglected by history, so called “minor masters” who may have lost the battle against the giants but nevertheless wrote very attractive, impressive and brilliant concertos for the piano (which in many cases was “their” instrument).

To name just a few: Hummel, Field, Czerny, Cxramer, Ries, Clementi, Thalberg, Moscheles, Litolff, Kalkbrenner, Lyapunov, Balakirev, Medtner, Glazunov, Henselt, Moszkowski, Scharwenka and many more, over 60 composers!
Most of the recordings come from the rich and unique VOX catalogue, featuring such excellent pianists as Michael Ponti, Felicja Blumenthal, Hans Kann, Martin Galling, Jerome Rose, Roland Keller and many more.

Composer: Franz Schubert
Artists: György Pauk (violin), Peter Frankl (piano)

These 1964 recordings have worn well, and stand their ground in what is hardly a competitive marketplace for this lovely and still little-known music. These Hungarian-born, later UK-resident musicians play Schubert to the manner born, rejoicing in the relaxed Viennese tradition which is their birthright; as Gramophone noted at the time of the first release, these interpretations "are always technically accomplished, sensitive and well thought out and much to be preferred to many a more sensational rendering. Pauk's firm tone and capacity for long-breathed phrasing are shown to good advantage in the opening of the Fantasy... As always the ensemble is impeccable...As usual Vox have supplied a sympathetic acoustic with just that extra touch of reverberation sufficient to take away all trace of a clinical studio atmosphere."

They are complemented here, as they were at the time of their original LP issue, by a no less sprightly performance of the sonata Schubert wrote for the obsolete Arpeggione, now most commonly heard on the cello. Gramophone’s critic observed Paul Olevsky’s "rich and beautiful tone" at the time.

Schubert’s relatively small but high-quality output for violin and piano consists of the three Sonatinas, small scale works full of Viennese charm and genial atmosphere, the mature Sonata in A major, the robust Rondo in B minor and the absolute masterpiece in the genre, the great Fantasy in C major, a substantial and dramatic 4-movement work of unprecedented difficulty for both players.

J.S. Bach: Complete Flute Sonatas

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artists: Jed Wentz (transverse flute), Michael Borgstede (harpsichord)

Another collection of Bach’s chamber music from the ensemble led by Jed Wentz and Michael Borgstede, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung’s Middle East correspondent. As on its earlier release on Brilliant Classics, the ensemble has researched the scores, performance techniques and the types of instrument used at the time of composition. That is not to say that the approach they take is a dry academic one. On the contrary, having assimilated all the information available to them, they then take an open-minded view of the score – freely admitting that if they were to play these works tomorrow, they’d more than likely give them a totally different interpretation. This new recording includes the flute sonatas and solos, and the Ricercar from the Musical Offering BWV1079. As no one actually knows what Bach’s intentions were when it came to performance and interpretation, the listener can be assured of fresh and invigorating readings of this fascinating and timeless music.

ABOUT GRIEG
Edvard Hagerup Grieg (15 June 1843 – 4 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use and development of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions put the music of Norway in the international spectrum, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius and Antonín Dvořák did in Finland and Bohemia, respectively.

ABOUT THE HOLBERG SUITE
The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly "From Holberg's Time", subtitled "Suite in olden style", is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neo-classicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.

ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA
Founded in 2015 by conductor Pavel Lyubomudrov, a graduate of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, the Metamorphose String Orchestra is a member of the prestigious Belarusian Union of Musician. Since its inception, the Orchestra has played more than 20 concerts in Minsk, all met with great critical acclaim.
With its constantly-changing repertoire, the Orchestra proves true to their name – experimentation is in their DNA. Special emphasis is put on Belarusian and Russian composers. The Orchestra’s repertoire currently includes works by Prokofiev (“Romeo and Juliet”) and Tchaikovsky (“The Nutcracker”, “Suite for Strings Op. 48”), as well as pillars of the classical repertoire such as Beethoven’s “Heroic” Symphony, Grieg’s “Holberg Suite”, Bizet’s “Carmen”, Haydn’s “Seven Words of the Savior on the Cross” and Britten’s “Symple Symphony”. In 2016, the Orchestra premiered the works of A. Litvinovsky (“Le Grand Cahier”, for the stage production of the same name) and A. Pozharitsky.
Throughout its life, the Orchestra has performed with prominent musicians and collaborated with important personalities of the Belarusian artistic community, such as O. Podov (Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Concertmaster of the State Chamber and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra) and Yulia Stefanovich (Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus). The Orchestra has also shared stages with flautist Maria Fedotova (Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg), cellist Mikael Samsonov (Belarus-Germany), oboist Juan Manuel Garcia-Cano (Spain) and pianist Stanislav Soloviev, just to mention a few.
In 2016, the Orchestra recorded their first album, Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, in the unique acoustics of the church of St. Roch. The same year, they performed at summer festival "KolerFest" (held at the Belarusian State Museum of Folk Architecture and Life), and were invited to perform at the concert of American metal band Manowar in Minsk, proving once again their versatility, creativity, and talent.

03. Piano Sonata no. 23 in F minor 'Appassionata', Op. 57 - III. Allegro ma non troppo 17:16

Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 23 in F minor, Op. 57, colloquially known as the Appassionata, is considered one of the great piano sonatas of his middle period. It was composed during 1803-6, published in 1807, and dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick. The nickname was coined in 1838 by the publisher of the four-hand arrangement. The Appassionata was considered by Beethoven to be his finest piano sonata until the Hammerklavier, describing it as a ''brilliantly executed display of emotion and music". An average performance of all three movements of the Appassionata sonata lasts about 23 minutes.

J.G. Pisendel: Violin Sonatas

Composers: Johann Georg Pisendel, Silvius Leopold Weiss
Artists: Thomasz Aleksander Plusa (violin), Robert Smith (cello), Earl Christy (lute), Ere Lievonen (harpsichord)

Johann Pisendel was the German violinist of his age; one whose total mastery of the instrument, and its expressive possibilities as filtered through both the Italian and German styles prevalent in the high Baroque era, made a fundamental impression on both Telemann and Bach. Without Pisendel, it is fair to say, there would be no Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin; Pisendel’s own fiendish unaccompanied sonata served as a model to Bach and survives partially in a publication by his great friend Georg Philipp Telemann.

As is the case with Bach, Pisendel’s ‘accompanied’ violin sonatas, in which the violin is joined by a continuo ensemble, are scarcely less demanding. They, too, are four-movement works, often in the classic slow-fast-slow-fast pattern laid down by Geminiani and Corelli and doubtless taught to Pisendel when he was a boy in Ansbach by Giuseppe Torelli, a musician in the court chapel and a fine composer in his own right.

Further instruction was provided by the powerfully individual leader of music at the court chapel in Dresden, Johann David Heinichen; throughout his career, Pisendel enjoyed happy association, often close friendship, with the great composers of his day; later in life, these included both Telemann and Zelenka. Perhaps because of these associations, Pisendel set himself the highest standards in composition; unlike most of his contemporaries, he subjected what he wrote to continual correction and revision, which may also account for the relatively succinct nature of his output.

Four such sonatas are presented here, and divided from each other by movements from the many lute sonatas by Pisendel’s exact contemporary Sylvius Leopold Weiss. They are played here by the young Czech early-music virtuoso, who in his own, extended booklet notes, gives an account not only of Pisendel’s life and work but also of his affinity with this music: ‘Each one was as surprisingly beautiful as the previous, and no less unique… [in Pisendel] the idiom of the violin is brought to its peak.’

Johann Georg Pisendel (1687-1755) was born into a musical family (his father was Cantor), and from an early age he received lessons as a chorister and in violin, his teacher being the famous Giuseppe Torelli. Further studies brought him to Weimar where he met Johann Sebastian Bach (his near-contemporary) and Leipzig, where he met Telemann. In 1712 he joined the famous court orchestra of Dresden, where he stayed till his death in 1755.
The acquaintance and friendship of the two musical giants of the time, Bach and Telemann, left a firm imprint on him as a composer and violinist. On the other hand Pisendel’s astonishing virtuosity influenced Bach to a great extent, Bach’s solo violin sonatas & partitas would not have been the same without Pisendel.
This new recording presents three violin sonatas and one violin solo sonata by Pisendel, works of staggering technical demands, rich in harmony and freedom of expression. As interludes we hear solo lute works by Silvius Leopold Weiss.
Played with immense dedication and conviction by young Polish violinist Tomasz Aleksander Plusa, who studied with Lucy van Dael, Christoph Rousset, Simon Standage, Sigiswald Kuijken and others.

01. Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 - I. Allegro ma non 00:00

02. Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 - II. Larghetto 24:29

03. Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 - III. Rondo: Allegro 34:31

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. It was written for his colleague Franz Clement, a popular violinist, who had helped him with the composition of his opera Fidelio. The concert premiered in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, as part of a benefit concert for Clement. It is believed that Beethoven finished the solo part so late that Clement had to sight read part of his performance, and to express his annoyance Clement interrupted the concerto to play a composition of his own, played on one string with the violin upside down. The premiere was not a success, and the concerto was little performed in the following decades. The work was revived in 1844 with performances by the then 12-year-old violinist Joseph Joachim with the orchestra conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. Ever since, it has been one of the most important works of the violin concerto repertoire, and it is frequently performed and recorded today.
