The Coriolan Overture (Ouvertüre Coriolan), Op. 62, is a 1807 composition by Beethoven, based on Heinrich Joseph's von Collin's 1804 tragedy about the ancient Roman leader Gaius Marcius Coriolanus, not, as is sometimes claimed, for Shakespeare's play Coriolanus. The structure and themes of the overture follow the play very generally, the main Cm theme represents Coriolanus' resolve and war-like tendencies, while the more tender Eb theme represents the pleadings of his mother to desist. The overture was premiered in March 1807 at a private concert of the home of Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz. The Symphony No. 4 in B flat and the Piano Concerto No. 4 in G were premiered in that same concert.

Composer: Robert Schumann
Artists: Andrea Cortesi (violin), Marco Venturi (piano)

Written with typical haste in just five days – 12–16 September 1851 – and burning with the fire of inspiration, Schumann’s First Violin Sonata Op.105 expresses the composer’s interior tension with particular clarity, moving between the drive and doubt which he encapsulated with two mock-literary archetypes, Florestan and Eusebius. All three violin sonatas date from the years shortly before his breakdown, attempted suicide and subsequent committal to the asylum at Endenich where he spent his last days, forbidden to compose and deprived of his beloved Clara’s company.

That is not to say that the first two sonatas are in any way weak works, even if Schumann himself commented with the deadpan irony usually more associated with his young friend Brahms, ’I don’t care for the first violin sonata, so I wrote a second, which I hope has turned out better’. Whatever the motivation, it is certain that Schumann, in spite of his fragile psychological condition, found creative energy to complete another impassioned chamber work in a very short time. As in the first sonata, in this work the febrile expressive and introverted language seems to escape from the typical style of the salons to a restless expression even in the slow movement, where violin and piano converse in an incessant and obsessive way.

This is even more true of the densely polyphonic Third Sonata, which perhaps more than the previous two reveals the demons at Schumann’s shoulder, but the composer’s particular gift for the swift movement of chamber music lifts all the sonatas from the intricately circular movement which afflicts the heavier textures of other late music for larger forces such as the Mass.

Telemann: 6 Violin Sonatas

Composer: Georg Philipp Telemann
Artists: Valerio Losito baroque (violin), Federico Del Sordo (harpsichord)

Brilliant Classics presents the release of a new recording which delves further into the protean output of that most prolific of composers, Georg Philipp Telemann. In the year that he is remembered with particular enthusiasm, 250 years after his death in Hamburg, the breadth of his achievement can be appreciated more than ever, not least thanks to recent recordings of the recorder sonatas (BC95247), concertos and suites for flute (BC95147), double concertos with recorder (BC95249), oboe concertos (BC95379), and a reissue of the classic account of the complete Tafelmusik (BC92177), which is the modern counterpart to the Bruggen recording that brought Telemann’s name to so many listeners half a century ago.

Much of this music concentrates on the composer’s fondness for wind instruments. Now Valerio Losito brings our attention to the accompanied sonatas. Rather as with Bach, when we think of Telemann and the violin, it is the unaccompanied music that first springs to mind, for the free and unbridled imagination and the evident pleasure it gives to violinists who perform and record the 12 fantasias. However (like Bach), Telemann produced a set of six sonatas for violin accompanied by harpsichord, with or without a separate basso continuo, and first published in 1715.

The sonatas were effectively his opus 1, published in 1715 at the comparatively late age of 24, and dedicated to the violin-playing Duke of Saxe-Weimar, from whom Telemann evidently wished to curry favour to judge from his long and obsequious preface. In just six sonatas may be found a remarkable diversity of elements: the Italianate style and Corelli-like fugues of Sonatas 1 and 5, echoes of Polish and ‘gypsy’ folk music in Sonatas 3 and 4, melodious arias reminiscent of Handel in sonata 3, and dance movements in the French style in Sonatas 2 and 6. Telemann’s genius allowed him to condense and reconcile in one volume parallel worlds that would appear to be mutually incompatible.

Egmont, Op. 84, is the overture for the incidental music for the 1787 play of the same name by J.W. von Goethe. The subject of narrative is the life of the 16th-century Count of Egmont. It was composed during the Napoleonic Wars, when the French had extended their domination over most of Europe. Beethoven had famously expressed his outrage over Bonaparte's decision to crown himself Emperor in 1804, scratching out his name in the dedication of the Eroica Symphony. In the music for Egmont, Beethoven expressed his own political concerns through the exaltation of the heroic sacrifice of a man condemned to death for having taken a valiant stand against oppression. The Overture later became an unofficial anthem of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. The music was greeted with eulogistic praise, in particular by E.T.A. Hoffmann for its poetry, and Goethe himself declared that Beethoven had expressed his intentions with "a remarkable genius". The overture, powerful and expressive, is one of the last works of his middle period; it has become as famous a composition as the Coriolan Overture, and is in a similar style to the Fifth Symphony, which he had completed two years earlier.

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artist: Kristóf Baráti (violin)

Bach may well be one of the most widely acknowledged master composers of all time, but that only serves to make each performer’s interpretation of his work all the more challenging and distinctive: each musician must both do justice to the composer’s intention, making a decision as to the best way of conveying that within the music which is not fixed, and at the same time leave their own mark on the performance. This is especially true for these Sonatas and Partitas given the variety of styles in which such Baroque masterworks have been performed, ranging from the freely romantic to the strictly precise, and the technical challenge posed by these complex pieces for a single instrument.

The works in this collection are something of an enigma, not only because of the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances and date of their composition, but, more crucially, because of the way in which they stretch the capacity for polyphony of a single violin beyond its physical limit. It is as though Bach had written for a full ensemble of instruments – but on a single staff. Modern musicians have even speculated as to the possible existence of a special bow with which an exact performance of the music might have been achieved in Bach’s day. The music is no less rich for all of this, however: on the contrary, the harmonic complexity of these pieces is at once captivating and beautiful; the implied but absent notes are thrillingly suggestive; and the multiplicity of voices leaves the listener marvelling at Bach’s compositional vision and the performer’s ability.

This accomplished musical feat is performed by Kristóf Baráti, a Hungarian violinist who has worked with an astonishing number of world-famous orchestras and conductors. Baráti plays a 1703 Stradivarius violin, and one can sense this echo of the era of the pieces as much as one can his intense emotional involvement with the music.

Though several of Vivaldi’s most delightful concertos are written for the flute, he left relatively little chamber music for the instrument: the ‘Il Pastor Fido’ set which used to be attributed to him is now known to have been composed by Nicolas Chédeville. On this valuable new recording, Mario Folena and Roberto Loreggian offer what seems to be all that is left of Vivaldi’s output for the genre, informed by the latest scholarship and in delightful and lively period-instrument recordings. They couple it not with the previously recorded ‘Il Pastor Fido’ sonatas, but with a genuine rarity: an arrangement of ‘Spring’ from The Four Seasons made by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the composer and philosopher who argued that, in politics as in music, Man should return to first principles.

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 11 in Bb major, Op. 22, was composed in 1800. Subsequent sonatas find Beethoven experimenting more with form and concept. A typical performance lasts 23 minutes.

00:00 Cello Concerto No.1 Op.17 In E Flat Major
29:48 Cello Concerto No.2 Op.126

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was a Russian composer and pianist. He is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Soviet chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the government. Nevertheless, he received accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1947–1962) and the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (from 1962 until his death).
A polystylist, Shostakovich developed a hybrid voice, combining a variety of different musical techniques into his works. His music is characterized by sharp contrasts, elements of the grotesque, and ambivalent tonality; the composer was also heavily influenced by the neo-classical style pioneered by Igor Stravinsky, and (especially in his symphonies) by the late Romanticism associated with Gustav Mahler. Shostakovich's orchestral works include 15 symphonies and six concerti. His chamber output includes 15 string quartets, a piano quintet, two piano trios, and two pieces for string octet. His solo piano works include two sonatas, an early set of preludes, and a later set of 24 preludes and fugues. Other works include three operas, several song cycles, ballets, and a substantial quantity of film music; especially well known is The Second Waltz, Op. 99, music to the film The First Echelon (1955–1956), as well as the suites of music composed for The Gadfly.

04. Sonata No. 12 in A Flat Major, Op. 26 - IV. Allegro 18:23

Beethoven composed his Sonata no. 12, Op. 26, in 1800–1, at the same time as he completed his first symphony. Dedicated to Prince Karl von Lichnowsky -his patron since 1792- the work consists of 4 movements and takes around 20 minutes to perform. It is unconventional in structure, opening with a relatively slow movement in the format of theme and variations. The remaining movements of the sonata proceed according to classical principles in fast-slow-fast alternation. The third movement incorporates a funeral march, clearly anticipating the watershed of the Eroica Symphony that Beethoven wrote in 1803-4. This is the only movement from his sonatas that Beethoven arranged for orchestra, and was played during his own funeral procession. This sonata is also unusual in that none of its four movements is in sonata-allegro form. This piece was quoted by both Schubert and Chopin in later compositions.

Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Artists: Ensemble Pyramide, Markus Brönnimann (flute), Barbara Tillmann (oboe), Ulrike Jacoby (violin), Muriel Schweizer (viola), Anita Jehli (cello)

For many Mozart is more ‘perfector’ than ‘innovator’, a composer who drew on an already extant vocabulary to create some of the greatest works in European culture. In this recording, however, we are introduced to Mozart the ‘trailblazer’: the first composer in history to take wind instruments seriously. Whereas his colleagues were inclined to employ the so-called Harmonie merely to reinforce the general sonority, Mozart took it upon himself to exploit the character of each of these instruments, endowing them with a much more individualistic, distinctive role – as soloists, in the orchestra or in chamber music, the subject of this engaging release.

Such writing is evident in the Quartet for oboe and strings, a work of wide leaps and brilliant passages that was composed for the Mannheim virtuoso Friedrich Ramm, and the Flute Quartet in D – written for the highly accomplished amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean and in which the principal voice, equipped with pearling runs in the first movement, is treated with great care, displaying nothing of the composer’s supposed aversion to the instrument. Both works are milestones of their respective genres, and they are joined on this recording by three pieces originally composed for mechanical organ (and arranged for this recording by flautist Markus Brönnimann), originally commissioned by Count Deym to be used as accompaniment for a newly erected mausoleum in Vienna. Among these, the Fantasia in F minor K608 stands out as the most intense and dramatic, combining rigorous harmonic invention with memorable melody, polyphonic complexity and compositional virtuosity. Brönnimann’s suggestion as to a possible comparison with the works of the American-born composer Conlon Nancarrow, as mentioned in the booklet note, reveals just how forwardthinking this music was for its time.

At hand to perform these works is Ensemble Pyramide, a group whose diverse repertoire ranges from Baroque to 21st century and whose recital programmes are often based around the juxtaposition between new and old. Based in Zurich and awarded the city’s cultural stipend ‘Werkjahr für Interpretation’ in 2006, its recordings for radio and on CD (which take in labels such as Naxos and Ars Musici) are complemented by an active recording schedule throughout Europe.

Beethoven composed his Sonata no. 13 'Quasi una fantasia' Op. 27 no. 1 in 1800-1, dedicated to Princess Josephine von Liechtenstein. . He had already made a name as a pianist and composer, and was starting to explore alternatives to Vienesse traditions. The most famous works of his middle period were yet to come. Sketches for the work survive, but the original autograph copy is lost. The sonata shares it subtitle with the so called Moonlight Sonata and, unlike the latter, it's played without pauses between movements, in the manner of most fantasias. A typical performance of the work lasts 15 minutes.

Composer: Claude Debussy
Artists: Trio Stradivari, Federico Guglielmo (violin), Luigi Puxeddu (cello), Jolanda Violante (piano)

These original works and arrangements for violin, cello and piano by Claude Debussy span the composer’s protean career, from the early Piano Trio of 1880 to the Cello Sonata of 1915 and the Violin Sonata, completed in 1917 as part of an abortive six-sonata project which ended halfway when he died the following year. Especially since the performances are given with the experience harvested by three musicians who are better known as early-music specialists, soaked in the philosophy of historically informed performance practice, they offer an intriguing survey, unique on record, of the composer’s development. As Harold Schonberg, music critic of The New York Times, wrote, it would be amusing to invite classical music ‘experts’ to listen to the Piano Trio, with its expressive reminiscences of Schumann, and then guess who the composer is: few of them would say Debussy. And yet the two late sonatas masterfully shuffle the cards of Impressionism, pre-Classical sonata structures and Stravinskian distance and eccentricity: the Cello Sonata originally bore a heavily symbolic title (Pierrot faché avec la lune) relating to the paintings of Watteau with their elusive mixture of melancholy and irony. It uses the timbre of early music and citations from the great French harpsichordists to conjure up Pierrot’s moody, troubled world, which was that of the slyly smiling masks of the commedia dell’arte.

The arrangements are the work of several hands, among them Debussy himself, of better-known and justifiably popular works that revel in the sophisticated evocation of mood through lyrical melody and evanescent textures, including ‘The Girl with the Flaxen Hair’ and ‘Minstrels’

Composer: Antonio Vivaldi
Artists: La Magnifica Comunitá, Enrico Casazza (violin and concert master)

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is one of the world’s most popular and widely recorded collections of music, a set that instantly became an international hit after it was first published at part of the composer’s Op.8 in 1725. No doubt it was its imitative directness – extra musical occurrences/phenomena evoked in an extremely suggestive manner and even written into the score, such as ‘the barking dog’ or ‘the drunkards’ sleep’ etc. – that caused such as sensation in its time, effortlessly bridging the gap between the salons of the highborn and the alehouses of the lowly. Today nothing has changed: the concertos are performed both by great violin virtuosos and famous hard rockers; they are works that are constantly being presented in new guises through the re-imagining and re-working of the musical score. This is an extremely infectious performance by early music specialists La Magnifica Comunitá.

Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 16 was composed between 1801-2. Although it was numbered as the first piece in the trio of sonatas Op. 31 Beethoven actually finished it after Op. 31 no. 2, the Tempest Sonata. These works are amongst the first examples of Beethoven's new and unconventional ideas, an attempt to make a name for himself in the annals of music history. It is important to take into account that these pieces were written after the famous Heiligenstadt Testament of 1802. This sonata is light, breezy and has touches of humour and irony in its movements. Critics say that the Opus 31 works show now a more pronounced "Beethovenian" sense of style that will become more evident in later, mature works. A typical

03. Sonata no. 17 in D minor 'The Tempest', Op. 31 no. 2 - III. Allegretto 15:22

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Piano Sonata no. 17, Op. 31 no. 2, between the years 1801 and 1802. It is a work in three movements, in the key of D minor, and it is usually called by its nickname 'The Tempest' (Der Sturm). This name, though, does not come from Beethoven himself, nor was the sonata referred to as such during his lifetime. Instead, it comes from a claim by his associate Anton Schindler that the sonata was inspired by the homonymous Shakespeare play. Much of Schindler's information is distrusted by scholars. A standard performance of the piece takes approximately twenty-five minutes.
