US Defense Agency Wants Battlespace To Combat Russia And China Hypersonic Weapons

by Tyler Durden
Tue, 09/18/2018 - 00:15

The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) submitted a request for highly maneuvrable Mach 5 missile interceptors to combat the hypersonic threat from Russia and China. The solicitation was submitted to the Department of Defense (DOD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program, a congressionally mandated program coordinated by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to obtain innovative defense solutions from private industry to address defense technology gaps.

"The technology within this topic is restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), which controls the export and import of defense-related material and services. Offerors must disclose any proposed use of foreign nationals, their country of origin, and what tasks each would accomplish in the statement of work in accordance with section 5.4.c.(8) of the Announcement," said the MDA.
According to the description of the solicitation, the MDA is searching for hypersonic missiles that have extraordinary aerodynamic controls to intercept Russian or Chinese hypersonic weapons.

"Concepts should focus on maximizing maneuverability and minimizing kinetic energy losses to the greatest extent possible while allowing controlled flight in a hypersonic environment.

Studies may include various geometries, materials, positioning for control surfaces, or other innovative concepts. Proposers may assume vehicles are simple conical shapes or shapes with greater lift-drag ratios. Proposers may also assume a range of velocities above Mach 5 and a range of altitudes up to 50 kilometers. Solutions could have applicability to small interceptors, such as projectiles shorter than one meter or larger interceptors, such as missiles over 5 meters long," said the MDA.
MDA recently asked for $120.4 million in FY19 for hypersonic defense research. Current missile interceptors are not designed to defend against hypersonic missiles, and that MDA wants to transform interceptors into anti-hypersonic weapons.

The request provides a complete breakdown of how the program will rollout once the MDA selects the proper technology.

  • PHASE I: Perform analysis on promising aerodynamic control concepts to include modeling and/or limited wind tunnel assessment. Estimate the maneuverability and kinetic energy loss for maneuvers at a range of Mach numbers and altitudes. Down select to one or two preferred design concepts.
  • PHASE II: Work with a missile defense system integrator to mature the selected geometry and design. Obtain higher fidelity estimates of performance. Test in a representative environment such as a wind tunnel.
  • PHASE III DUAL-USE APPLICATIONS: Work with a system integrator to refine requirements and integrate into a full guidance navigation and control system. Demonstrate the technology in a representative environment. Transition the technology into a missile defense application.

Earlier this month, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) debuted its Glide Breakers program at D60 Symposium, a three-day conference honoring the organization's 60th anniversary.

The program will research “component technologies” needed for one or more defense systems but will focus heavily on a kinetic-force weapon to intercept high-speed enemy missiles.

With Russia and China jumping ahead of the US with superior hypersonic weapons, it seems that multiple agencies within the Pentagon are seeking to develop various forms of hypersonic interceptors -- on short notice.

While many believe American Hegemony is here to stay, there is a strong possibility that it could be somewhat displaced in the coming years as China and Russia now lead the hypersonic race. MDA's request for Mach 5 hypersonic missile interceptors and DARPA's Glide Breaker program, should be viewed as a defensive maneuver by Washington, as US Admiral Harry Harris, former head of the US Pacific Command and now the ambassador to South Korea, said, “China’s hypersonic weapons development outpaces ours… we’re falling behind.”

The Pentagon...: "Washington Soldier" 1960 US Army; The Big Picture TV-454

'"Washington Soldier" is a film that young and old will enjoy. It is a look-see at a side of the nation's capital that the tourists seldom see as they pass through. There is a concert in the inner courtyard of the Pentagon with the United States Army Band, featuring PFC Steve Lawrence, and a tour of the famous five-sided building along the Potomac. Brought to the television screen on "THE BIG PICTURE" is the story of soldiers on duty in the Pentagon and assigned to Headquarters Company, United States Army, Fort Myer, Virginia. Written by Dan Klugherz and directed by Don Livingston, "Washington Soldier" examines the varied jobs of the men and women in uniform and the unique experience of being a part of the life of this great city. Featured in the leading role of this film is PFC Edward Griffiths, a former drama student at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Since the soldier on duty in Washington must also follow a monthly training schedule as well as perform his assigned tasks in the Pentagon, the writer has included field training sequences in the picture as well as a troop information program tour of the famous Civil War battlefield -- Manassas or Bull Run. More familiar to the visitor will be scenes of the First Battle Group, Third Infantry, frequently referred to as "The Old Guard."'

"The Big Picture" episode TV-454.

Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. As a symbol of the U.S. military, The Pentagon is often used metonymically to refer to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Pentagon was designed by American architect George Bergstrom (1876–1955), and built by general contractor John McShain of Philadelphia. Ground was broken for construction on September 11, 1941, and the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943. General Brehon Somervell provided the major motivating power behind the project; Colonel Leslie Groves was responsible for overseeing the project for the U.S. Army.

The Pentagon is the world's largest office building, with about 6,500,000 sq ft (600,000 m2), of which 3,700,000 sq ft (340,000 m2) are used as offices. Approximately 23,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support personnel work in the Pentagon. It has five sides, five floors above ground, two basement levels, and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17.5 mi (28.2 km) of corridors...

On September 11, 2001, exactly 60 years after the building's construction began, American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked and flown into the western side of the building, killing 189 people (59 victims and the five perpetrators on board the airliner, as well as 125 victims in the building)...

Fort Myer is the previous name used for a U.S. Army post next to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia... the post merged in 2005 with the neighboring Marine Corps installation, Henderson Hall, and is today named Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall...

Quarters One on Fort Myer, which was originally built as the garrison commander's quarters, has been the home of the Chief of Staff of the United States Army since 1908 when Major General J. Franklin Bell took up residence. It has been the home of every succeeding Chief of Staff, except for General John J. Pershing...

Steve Lawrence (born Sidney Liebowitz; July 8, 1935) is an American singer and actor, best known as a member of a duo with his wife Eydie Gormé, billed as "Steve and Eydie". The two appeared together since appearing regularly on Tonight Starring Steve Allen in the mid-1950s until Gormé's retirement in 2009 (Gormé subsequently died August 10, 2013)...

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) it is faster than contemporary utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s. Alongside the C-130 Hercules and the UH-1 Iroquois, the CH-47 is one of the few aircraft of that era that is still in production and front line service, with over 1,179 built to date. Its primary roles include troop movement, artillery emplacement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks.

The Chinook was designed and initially produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s. The helicopter is now produced by Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. Chinooks have been sold to 16 nations with the US Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK variants)) being the largest users. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters.

In late 1956, the United States Department of the Army announced plans to replace the CH-37 Mojave, which was powered by piston engines, with a new, turbine-powered helicopter. Turbine engines were also a key design feature of the smaller UH-1 "Huey" utility helicopter. Following a design competition, in September 1958, a joint Army-Air Force source selection board recommended that the Army procure the Vertol medium transport helicopter. However, funding for full-scale development was not then available, and the Army vacillated on its design requirements. Some in the Army aviation corps thought that the new helicopter should be a light tactical transport... Another faction in the Army aviation corps thought that the new helicopter should be much larger...

Vertol began work on a new tandem-rotor helicopter designated Vertol Model 107 or V-107 in 1957. In June 1958, the US Army awarded a contract to Vertol for the aircraft under the YHC-1A designation. The YHC-1A had a capacity for 20 troops. Three were tested by the Army to derive engineering and operational data. However, the YHC-1A was considered by most of the Army users to be too heavy for the assault role and too light for the transport role. The decision was made to procure a heavier transport helicopter and at the same time upgrade the UH-1 "Huey" as a tactical troop transport. The YHC-1A would be improved and adopted by the Marines as the CH-46 Sea Knight in 1962. The Army then ordered the larger Model 114 under the designation HC-1B. The pre-production Boeing Vertol YCH-1B made its initial hovering flight on 21 September 1961. In 1962 the HC-1B was redesignated the CH-47A under the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system.

The name "Chinook" alludes to the Chinook people of the Pacific Northwest. The CH-47 is powered by two turboshaft engines, mounted on each side of the helicopter's rear end and connected to the rotors by driveshafts. Initial models were fitted with engines of 2,200 horsepower...

Improved and more powerful versions of the CH-47 have been developed since the helicopter entered service. The US Army's first major design leap was the now-common CH-47D, which entered service in 1982. Improvements from the CH-47C included upgraded engines, composite rotor blades, a redesigned cockpit to reduce pilot workload, improved and redundant electrical systems, an advanced flight control system and improved avionics. The latest mainstream generation is the CH-47F, which features several major upgrades to reduce maintenance, digitized flight controls, and is powered by two 4,733-horsepower Honeywell engines.

A commercial model of the Chinook, the Boeing-Vertol Model 234, is used worldwide for logging, construction, fighting forest fires, and supporting petroleum extraction operations...

'In Korea, the aggressor's challenge was met and turned back by the United Forces of the world's free nations. Yet in the backwash of war there always remains a second challenge -- the thousands of orphans, the millions of homeless, the countless villages and cities ravaged and almost completely destroyed. Our cameras focus on one such city, Seoul, the Capital of the Republic of Korea. It is the story of a city twice the parade ground of Communist troops, four times a battlefield. "Rebirth of Seoul" is also the story of man's enduring will to triumph in the face of the greatest adversity. With other free members of the United Nations, the United States met the Communist attack in Korea with bravery and sacrifice. Today, Americans, individually and through our government, are responding to the needs of the people of South Korea with generosity and compassion."'

Seoul (/soʊl/, like soul; Korean: 서울 [sʌ.ul]; literal translation: "Capital"), officially the Seoul Special City, is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea. Home to roughly half of the country's population, Seoul forms the heart of the Seoul Capital Area and includes the surrounding Incheon metropolis and Gyeonggi province. Seoul is ranked as the fourth largest metropolitan economy in the world and is larger than London or Paris.

Strategically situated on the Han River, Seoul's history stretches back over two thousand years, when it was founded in 18 BC by the people of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The city was later designated the capital of Korea under the Joseon dynasty. Seoul is surrounded by a mountainous and hilly landscape, with Bukhan Mountain located on the northern edge of the city. As with its long history, the Seoul Capital Area contains five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeok Palace, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine, Namhansanseong and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. More recently, Seoul has been a major site of modern architectural construction–major modern landmarks include the N Seoul Tower, the 63 Building, the Lotte World Tower, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Lotte World, Trade Tower, COEX, and the Parc1 Tower. Seoul was named the 2010 World Design Capital. Also the birthplace of K-pop and the Korean Wave, Seoul received over 10 million international visitors in 2014, making it the world's 9th most visited city and 4th largest earner in tourism.

Today, Seoul is considered a leading and rising global city, resulting from an South Korean economic boom called the Miracle on the Han River, which transformed it to the world's 4th largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US$845.9 billion in 2014 after Tokyo, New York City and Los Angeles. International visitors generally reach Seoul via AREX from the Incheon International Airport... Inhabitants of Seoul are faced with a high cost of living, for which the city was ranked 6th globally in 2017. With major technology hubs centered in Gangnam and Digital Media City, the Seoul Capital Area is home to the headquarters of 15 Fortune Global 500 companies, including Samsung, LG, and Hyundai... Seoul has hosted the 1986 Asian Games, 1988 Summer Olympics, 2002 FIFA World Cup, and more recently the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit...

During the Korean War, Seoul changed hands between the Russian/Chinese-backed North Korean forces and the American-backed South Korean forces several times, leaving the city heavily damaged after the war. The capital was temporarily relocated to Busan] One estimate of the extensive damage states that after the war, at least 191,000 buildings, 55,000 houses, and 1,000 factories lay in ruins. In addition, a flood of refugees had entered Seoul during the war, swelling the population of the city and its metropolitan area to an estimated 1.5 million by 1955...

Located in West Point, New York, its official mission is "to provide academic, military and physical instruction in a moral-ethical military environment to prepare and motivate candidates for success at the United States Military Academy."...

In 1916, the rules for admission to the U.S. Service Academies changed to include a formal admission process to ensure the appointees' success and excellence. Between the two World Wars, the U.S. was divided into nine corps areas, and each of these maintained its own West Point Preparatory School, all being supervised by the USMA staff.

Admissions

As with the prep schools of the other United States service academies, there is no separate application for USMAPS, only the West Point application. Admission officers will offer USMAPS to potential West Point cadets who have received their Congressional appointments yet may lack the grades or skills necessary for West Point. During the middle of the prep school year, Cadet Candidates must submit new applications to West Point, including the Congressional nomination. By June, Cadet Candidates will receive word of their application status and West Point acceptance. Most of those who attend the prep school will go on to West Point, contingent on their application, academics and grades, physical training, and military instruction. Some candidates may transfer to other service academies, or be sent back to the United States Army as a regular enlisted soldier...

The United States Military Academy (USMA), also known as West Point, Army, The Academy, or simply The Point, is a four-year coeducational federal service academy located in West Point, New York in Orange County. It sits on scenic high ground overlooking the Hudson River, 50 miles (80 km) north of New York City.

Taiwan is doomed. The numbers prove it. Or so we are told. Every year the U.S. Department of Defense publishes the statistics. Taiwan’s defense budget is $10 billion. China’s is $154 billion. There are almost a million active duty soldiers in the People’s Liberation Army versus 140,000 ground troops across the strait. Taiwan has 420 fighters versus China’s 1,490 and 23 ships versus China’s 240.

WORLD WAR II BOUGAINVILLE CAMPAIGN OPERATION CARTWHEEL NEWSREEL 1943 (print2) 80654
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Oct 5, 2018
This film BOUGAINVILLE A STEP TO VICTORY presents the Bougainville Campaign starting in mid-1943, as Allied planes began bombing the Solomons. At 1:10, troops are seen loading up at Guadalcanal, to head towards Bougainville. The beach assault is seen at 2:15, with the landing on November 3, 1943. The battle that follows is a heated one, with troops backed by tanks and flamethrowers advancing into the jungle and taking heavy casualties. Maps are read in the field at 5:30, with plans to assault the Japanese 6th Division. The Japanese attack is repulsed and the film ends with images of the graves of U.S. troops, as well as images of a rear area where troops relax and enjoy entertainment from the USO, a "Radio City" area, and even at 9:00 some surfing.

The Bougainville Campaign was a series of land and naval battles of the Pacific campaign of World War II between Allied forces and the Empire of Japan. It was part of Operation Cartwheel, the Allied grand strategy in the South Pacific. The campaign took place in the Northern Solomons in two phases. The first phase, in which American troops invaded and held the perimeter around the beachhead at Torokina, lasted from November 1943 through November 1944. The second phase, in which primarily Australian troops went on the offensive, mopping up pockets of starving, isolated but still-determined Japanese, lasted from November 1944 until August 1945, when the last Japanese on the island surrendered. Operations during the final phase of the campaign saw the Australian forces advance north towards the Bonis Peninsula and south towards the main Japanese stronghold around Buin, although the war ended before these two enclaves were completely destroyed.

Special forces have become America's instrument for waging small wars on the cheap, using small numbers of elite soldiers rather than large numbers of expensive -- and politically sensitive -- regular troops. As China begins to stretch its muscles across the globe, it would be surprising if it did not do the same.

US Army Wants 250,000 Next-Gen Combat Rifles And 150 Million Bullets

by Tyler Durden
Fri, 10/12/2018 - 01:00

The US Army's chief of staff said Monday that the next-generation squad weapon would fire faster, farther than previous infantry rifles and penetrate the most advanced body armor technologies in the world.

"It will fire at speeds that far exceed the velocity of bullets today, and it will penetrate any existing or known ... body armor that's out there," Gen. Mark Milley told Military.com at the 2018 Association of the US Army's Annual Meeting and Exposition. "What I have seen so far from the engineers and the folks that put these things together, this is entirely technologically possible ... It's a very good weapon."

Textron/AAI Next-Generation Gun (one of five firms submitted prototype weapons for the program)

Textron/AAI Next-Generation Gun

Military.com said Gen. Milley's comments come days after an Oct. 04 draft solicitation which announced the Army's plan to "award up to three prototype Other Transaction Agreements ... with each offeror developing two weapon variants and a common cartridge for both weapon, utilizing government-provided 6.8-millimeter projectiles," according to FedBizzOpps. "The weapons include the Next Generation Squad Weapon-Rifle (NGSW-R) and the Next Generation Squad Weapon-Automatic Rifle (NGSW-AR)."

The contract solicitation on FedBizzOpps states the Army plans to award production for up to "250,000 total weapons system(s) (NGSW-R, NGSW-AR, or both), 150,000,000 rounds of ammunition, spare parts, tools/gauges/accessories, and engineering support."

The contract award would be valued at "$10 million the first year and $150 million per year at the highest production rates," it adds.

In July, we documented how the Army selected five firms to build next-generation squad automatic rifle prototypes. The contracts were the result of a prototype opportunities notice that we also covered in March for the small-arms industry to submit designs to replace the M249 light machine gun.

We also said the Army is preparing for decades of hybrid wars across multiple domains - space, cyberspace, air, land and maritime. Back in Oct. 2017, we examined the military's latest Training and Doctrine Command report, which highlights how the next round of hybrid wars could begin somewhere around 2025 and last through 2040.

Military.com said Gen. Milley did not comment on the prototype contracts, but said there were "several prototypes that were advanced forward."

He said the Army is forbidden to "speak too much about its technical capabilities because our adversaries watch these things very closely."

"It's a very sophisticated weapon, very capable weapon. It's got an integrated sight system to it, and it also integrates into the soldier's gear and other equipment that we are fielding," Milley said. "And not surprisingly with a weapon like that, it's probably pretty expensive. We expect it to be expensive so we are probably not going to field the entire Army with the weapon."

"The bottom line is we are committed to a new rifle and a new squad automatic weapon," said Gen. Milley. "We hope to be able to shoot it on ranges down at Fort Benning, [Georgia], hopefully ... maybe sometime next year late summer."

So in case you are wondering what the next high-tech assault rifle could look like, well, watch this video:

Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewmen • Small Boat Warrior
Gung Ho Vids

Published on Oct 22, 2018
Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewmen (SWCC) are some of the most highly trained enlisted personnel in the U.S. Navy. Providing critical support to Naval Special Warfare SEALs and other military special operations forces, SWCC are specially trained to operate on and around rivers and coastal regions around the world while wielding extreme firepower and a deadly skill set. SWCC operators also conduct direct action and special reconnaissance missions on their own.
As a SWCC, you may very likely:
•Insert and extract SEALs and other Special Operations personnel from a variety of Naval Surface Warfare vessels
•Collect important data about enemy military installations and shipping traffic in coastal areas
•Assist other military and civilian law enforcement agencies
