Magazines, Accuracy, Reliability and More with the USMC M27 IAR
TFB TV

Published on Jan 3, 2018
We previously covered the Marine Corps M27 in last weeks episode and will be really getting into the weeds here in terms of some of the issues and benefits the weapon system afforded to Infantry Marines. Topics such as the choice of magazines for the automatic rifle, why it was so accurate and reliable, even dummy-cording the Squad Day Optic (SDO) to the rifle so it doesn't fall off while in the field. The current version of the M27 took care of some of these problems but left others intact.

WHY KINETIC ENERGY PROJECTILE OF U.S IS STRONG ANSWER TO RUSSIA’S TACTICAL NUKE?
Defense Updates

Published on Jan 3, 2018
INTRODUCTION

Russia has taken major steps in augmenting their military prowess. From new battle tank T14 Armata to developing the world’s most powerful ICBM Sarmat, Russian military is expanding its capabilities.

Russia has also been putting lot of attention on Tactical nukes.
To counter them, the U.S. Army is taking another look at a “devastating” weapon. The Kinetic Energy Projectile, or KEP, is a tungsten-based charge moving at three times the speed of sound that can destroy anything in its path. It was first tested by the Air Force and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2013.

In this video, Defense Updates analyses WHY KINETIC ENERGY PROJECTILE OF U.S IS STRONG ANSWER TO RUSSIA’S TACTICAL NUKE?

NEED

Why would the U.S. military, which has put untold billions of dollars into precision weapons over several decades, need such a blunt and terrifying weapon? The answer is to counter small nuclear weapons of Russia.

A tactical nuclear weapon (TNW) or non-strategic nuclear weapon is a nuclear weapon which is designed to be used on a battlefield level military situations, mostly with friendly forces in proximity and perhaps even on contested friendly territory. This is opposed to strategic nuclear weapons which are designed to be mostly targeted in the enemy interior away from the war front against military bases, cities, to damage the enemy’s ability to wage war.

Tactical nuclear weapons include gravity bombs, short-range missiles, artillery shells, land mines, depth charges, and torpedoes which are equipped with nuclear warheads. Also in this category are nuclear armed ground-based or shipborne surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and air-to-air missiles.
The yield of tactical nuclear weapons are generally lower than that of strategic nuclear weapons, but larger ones are still very powerful.

RUSSIAN TACTICAL NUKES

Maj. Gen. William His, the Army’s director of strategy, plans & policy, said “The Russians maintain their tactical nuclear stockpile in ways that U.S have not”.
Potomac Institute head Philip Karber, who helped write the Pentagon’s Russia New Generation Warfare Study, offered a bit more explanation.
While the United States retains just a few of its once-large arsenal of tactical nukes, Karber estimates that Russia currently has anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 of the weapons.

SIGNIFICANCE OF TACTICAL NUKES

By shrinking the warhead, one can shoot it out of a wider variety of guns, including, potentially, 152-millimeter tank cannons.
Barber said ,"They’ve announced that the follow-on tank to the Armata will have a 152-millimeter gun missile launcher. They’re talking about it having a nuclear capability. And you go, ‘You’re talking about building a nuclear tank, a tank that fires a nuke?’ Well, that’s the implication”.
Though the use of tactical battlefield nuclear weapons, even very low-level ones, is not part of official Russian military doctrine, but it is a capability that they are increasingly eager to show off to intimidate neighbors and adversaries.

.

AMERICA’S K.E.P

Kinetic Energy Projectile is a super-dense, super-fast projectile that, operating free of complex systems and volatile chemicals. Whether dropped from the sky or fired from a cannon, the principle behind these weapons is the same: hitting the enemy with something very hard and very dense, moving very fast. The principle of the kinetic energy penetrator is that it uses its kinetic energy, which is a function of its mass and velocity (K.E=1/2 Mass * Velocity) to impact target with lethal effects.

To maximize mass KEP uses the densest metals practical, which is one of the reasons depleted uranium or tungsten carbide is used.

Maj. Gen. His, said a few weeks ago at the Booz Allen Hamilton Direct Energy Summit “Think of it as a big shotgun shell”. But unlike a shotgun shell, Hix said, the KEP moves at incredible speeds of “Mach 3 to Mach 6.”

CONCLUSION

The kinetic energy projectile may become a staple of modern warfare soon as per most experts. The absence of explosive propellants to store and handle, as well as the lower cost of projectiles compared to conventional weaponry comes as great advantage.

K.E.P will be used as an advanced conventional precision effects warhead for prompt strike capability.
U.S and Russia has taken different routs in-terms of battle field level weapons. The Russian are going with tactical nukes which will cause widespread destruction whereas America is going with a more precise strike option.
For Russia, it makes sense as they already have a huge stockpile of tactical nukes. From America’s stand point, K.E.P fits well into the larger picture of augmenting precision strike options with this highly destructive technology.

It remains to be seen how this duel pans out in the future.

Cold War Berlin: "Soldier in Berlin" 1953 US Army; The Big Picture TV-232

'The impression that a young Corporal in the Army gets while on active duty in Berlin is vividly related in the first program of Series VI of THE BIG PICTURE. Being stationed in a small area within the "Iron Curtain" places a great deal of responsibility on the Army personnel, but allows them to see the city during free time. This picture gives the viewer a chance to see all of Berlin through the eyes of a GI serving his country there.'

"The Big Picture" episode TV-232

Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

...Although the Korean War – open East-West conflict – had ended, political tensions remained high in Europe. Particularly troublesome was the impasse over the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany, the former British, French and U.S. zones of occupation) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany, the former Soviet zone of occupation). East Germany [the DDR] was considered by many countries over the years to be nothing more than the Soviet Zone of Occupation; this changed in 1973 with the UN recognition of both Germanies. Berlin posed an additional problem; it was surrounded by East Germany, but Great Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union all occupied sectors in the city. In the early years, travel between the sectors was unrestricted. At the time Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev announced in June 1961 that the Soviet Union was planning to conclude a peace treaty with the East German government, 3,000 East German refugees flowed daily into Berlin.

Suddenly on the night of 12 August 1961, the Soviets closed the border crossing points and began to construct the Berlin Wall, isolating the three western sectors of the city both from East Germany and the Soviet sector, or East Berlin. In response, the United States deployed an additional armored cavalry regiment to Europe, along with additional support units. USAREUR strength reached a post-World War II high of 277,342 in June 1962 as the crisis deepened. That 1946–1991 Cold War maximum USAREUR troop record gradually reduced over time. The command dispatched a reinforced infantry battle group to Berlin to strengthen the existing garrison. The nuclear armed USAREUR did not go to DEFCON 3 during 22 Oct to 20 November 1962 Cuban Crisis due to political reasons. All other US Forces worldwide were at DEFCON 3 per JFK's 22 October speech and direction to the Pentagon; SAC went to DEFCON 2.

The crisis cooled in Berlin from 1962 to 1963, and augmenting forces returned to the United States. Equipment modernization programs during this period included the M113 armored personnel carrier, the M14 rifle, the M60 machine gun, the OV-1 fixed wing observation aircraft, the UH-1B Huey helicopter, the M151 MUTT truck, and the M60 Patton tank...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...

U.S. Army Berlin (USAB) was a command of the United States Army created in December 1961 at the height of the Berlin Wall crisis. USAB was a combined command with the Headquarters, U.S. Command Berlin (USCOB). This combined organization was sometimes called the "Berlin Command". USCOB/USAB was a separate command from the U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) which had previously been in command of American troops in West Berlin.

The major general who commanded this organization held the title of "Commandant; U.S. Commander Berlin; Commander, U.S. Army Berlin". A brigadier general served as the "Commander, Berlin Brigade (Infantry); Deputy Commander, U.S. Army Berlin and Community Commander".

The shoulder sleeve insignia adopted by USAB was the same as the patch used by the Berlin Brigade – the USAREUR patch with a Berlin tab. By the mid-1960's, the Berlin tab was incorporated into the patch.

Its headquarters were located at the Clay Headquarters Compound on Clayallee in Berlin's Zehlendorf district...

U.S. MILITARY HAS 'NO DEFENSE' AGAINST RUSSIAN NUCLEAR MISSILES, TOP GENERAL SAYS || WARTHOG 2018
Warthog Defense

Published on Jan 19, 2018
The U.S. could be vulnerable in the face of the threat posed by nuclear-capable Russian cruise missiles deployed by Moscow last month, according to the head of the U.S. Strategic Command.

Air Force Gen. John Hyten, who was the chief commander of the U.S. missile and nuclear warhead arsenal, told members of Congress Tuesday that Moscow's deployment last month of at least two battalions of the SSC-8 cruise missile, also called the RK-55 Relief, violated a 1987 arms treaty and put most of Europe at risk. Hyten told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Moscow's latest move left the U.S. and its NATO allies off guard.

Forget Britain’s nuc-deterrent – here’s what Russia is really afraid of Mark Galeotti
Weapons Of The World

Published on Jan 19, 2018
Russia is being weaponised to justify big-ticket buys for the UK military, yet there’s little talk of what Moscow thinks matters. The defence review must consider British interests in the round, of course. But if deterring the Russians is a major concern, then it is worth paying attention to what might really deter them, a flexible, fast-moving and versatile force of true professionals. Not necessarily with the heaviest kit, the biggest ships or the priciest aircraft, but able to get where they are needed, when they are needed.

Will The British Parachute Regiment Merge with the Royal Marines?
Matsimus

Published on Jan 21, 2018
The Parachute Regiment and the Royal Marines could be combined to save money as part of cuts to the military, according to newspaper claims.
The Times has reported that the government is looking at slicing numbers in the armed forces by more than 14,000.
Its claims have been branded as “pure speculation” by the Ministry of Defence who insist no decisions have been made. One option would see 3 Commando Brigade and 16 Air Assault Brigade, whose units include Royal Marines and the Parachute Regiment, combining. It is feared the move would reduce their fighting capability and make it harder to deploy them on long operations.
But the three proposals have been dubbed as “ugly, ugly, or ugly” by Whitehall sources. Top brass are under pressure to plug a £20billion shortfall in the Ministry of Defence’s budget over the next decade.

GERMAN RIFLE FOR US MARINES, H&K M27 REPLACING THE COLT M4 CARBINE || WARTHOG 2018
Warthog Defense

Published on Jan 22, 2018
The US Marine Corps has decided to increase its usage of the M27 automatic assault rifle and will begin issuing the upgraded weapon in place of the ageing M4 Carbine. The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle will be given to Marines in combat-related operations.

Almost all frontline Marines will get an M27, reported Popular Mechanics (PM), as they have found this rifle sufficiently better than the M4 – enough to cough up the additional cost of $3,000 (£2,165) per rifle. According to reports, every Marine in an infantry squad will get this weapon.

TIME FOR THE U.S. MILITARY TO GET ITS SWAGGER BACK || WARTHOG 2018
Warthog Defense

Published on Jan 26, 2018
While the Pentagon’s new strategy is being released in 2018, it is more like the year 2000 on Capitol Hill with members itching for the maverick spirit of then-presidential candidate John McCain’s campaign bus, the Straight Talk Express.

The substance of the document is classified at the request of Capitol Hill, but there is a growing consensus about how to grade its success or failure. It is past time for a new National Defense Strategy that seeks to break the mold in honesty, clarity, conciseness, and fresh thinking. As an official articulation of Pentagon doctrine, this is an opportunity to mend the broken dialogue between the military and the government and people they serve.

How The US & NATO Underestimated Russia’s Military Power, Russian Military Firepower Demonstration.

How The US & NATO Underestimated Russia’s Military Power. Russian Military Firepower Demonstration & military might

Focusing on shortcomings in equipment made Western military analysts underestimate Moscow’s military capacity
Russia’s military reforms have been misunderstood and its capabilities underestimated by the United States and Europe. That’s the conclusion of a new report by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).
The Russian military’s tactical and operational weaknesses became most blatantly apparent to the Kremlin during the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, when the U.S.-trained Georgian forces proved a much more agile and motivated adversary than expected.
As a consequence, Russia initiated the most far-reaching military the “new look” reforms since the 1930s divided up into three distinct phases, according to the ECFR study:
First, increasing professionalism by overhauling the education of personnel and cutting the number of conscripts; second, improving combat-readiness with a streamlined command structure and additional training exercises; and third, rearming and updating equipment.
The United States and Europe primarily focused on the third and still mostly incomplete aspect of these reforms, neglecting the substantial progress that was made in the first and second phases.
Almost unnoticed by observers, the Russian military addressed one of the biggest organizational weaknesses dating back to the Soviet and Czarist eras and introduced a new professionally trained non-commissioned officers corps dissolving the existing warrant officers system.
“For the first time, the Russian army had a pyramid structure, with few decision-makers at the top and more officers servicing the troops,” the study reads. Furthermore, officer salaries were increased five-fold and more modern management methods introduced. These reforms also resulted in substantial savings which were used to increase the percentage of professional soldiers within the Russian Armed Forces:
This allowed the troops to use more high-tech equipment (conscripts serve too short a period to be effectively trained on complex weapons systems) and increased the combat-readiness of elite forces (paratroopers, naval infantry, and special forces).
The military education system was also reformed – partially based on the systems of Switzerland and Austria—with the aim of introducing “state of-the-art (Western) leadership techniques.” Moreover, new uniforms and personal equipment were introduced boosting overall moral and confidence.
The second part of the reforms dealt with streamlining command structures and re-organizing the Russian Armed Forces into smaller more agile units by reducing the nominal size of the military by 43 percent—out of 23 old divisions 40 “new look” brigades were formed.
The old Soviet-era practice of mobilization—calling up reservists to achieve combat strengths—was abolished and unnecessary administrative commands scrapped. “The [new] military districts were transformed into joint forces commands, and their number was reduced. This cut the levels of hierarchy as the military districts now have access to all land, air, and naval forces in their zone,” according to the ECFR paper.
Furthermore, the number of military drills was substantially increased and large-scale “snatch exercises” conducted continuously, testing the combat-readiness of airborne units and “new look” brigades. New units should be able to deploy within 24 hours.
“While such high readiness levels have not yet been achieved, one has to bear in mind that before the reforms some Russian divisions needed about a year of preparation before deploying to Chechnya,” the study notes.
The result of these reforms was that Russia was capable of maintaining a force of 40,000 and 150,000 men in full combat-ready formations along the Russian-Ukrainian border for months, while conducting military drills involving around 80,000 troops in other parts of the country.

It is when analyzing the last phase that Western observers made the mistake of overemphasizing the difficulties of the Russian defense industry in delivering new military hardware and inferring a general failure of the reforms. “However, this is a misunderstanding of the nature of the reforms. The initial stages were not designed to create a new army in terms of equipment, but to ensure that existing equipment was ready to use, and to make the organization that uses it more effective and professional,” according to the ECFR paper.
This led to Western military analysts underestimating Russian military capabilities and neglecting new operational concepts such as Russia’s unique approach of merging conventional with unconventional warfighting methods, among other things.

Pantsyr-S1 - SA-22 Greyhound | RUSSIAN AIR DEFENSE
Matsimus

Published on Jan 28, 2018
The Pantsyr-S1 NATO designation SA-22 Greyhound short range air defense system is designed to protect strategic military and civil point targets. It was designed to meet the requirements of the Russian Air Defense Forces (PVO). This system is capable of engaging a wide variety of aerial targets, such as aircraft, helicopters, ballistic and cruise missiles, guided bombs. Developers claim that it is also capable of engaging stealthy aircraft, such as the F-22 and F-35. It was first publicly revealed in 1995 and entered service in 2007-2008. The first 10 Pantsyr-S1 air defense systems were delivered to the Russian Air Force in 2010. It is claimed that by 2014 more than 200 of these air defense systems were produced. It has also been exported to Algeria, Syria and United Arab Emirates (50 units). This air defense system was recently ordered by Iraq. The Pantsyr-S1 saw action during the military conflict in Ukraine. The Pantsyr-S1 is a further development of the 2S6 Tunguska air defense gun/missile system, based on a tracked chassis. It carries up to 12 surface-to-air missiles in sealed containers. These missiles are ready-to-launch and have a radio-command guidance. It is worth mentioning, that missiles are not fitted with seekers. Instead missile tracking is provided via the combat vehicle's sensor system. The 57E6 missile of the Pantsyr has a two-stage solid-fuel rocket motors. It has a maximum speed of 1 000 m/s (Mach 3). Missiles of this air defense system have a maximum range of 20 km. Minimal range is 1 km. Maximum altitude is 8 km.
