some of today's vehicles are so advanced, multiple computers, some that record conversations inside the vehicle, so, big brother comes along, on the ride, for free...we used to just call them bums but they've learned to make a living out of it...

Airbags. Started out with ONE for each front-seat occupant. From there we have a whole forest of airbags, in seats, sides, steering wheel, dash. All controlled by microprocessors.
It's very little additional to have those brains report back to the Mothership; and government sure appreciates it. If it's not demanding it now, it will in the future - soon.
