Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda was taken into custody for allegedly throwing a 5-year-old off a third-floor balcony.

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, has been identified as the suspect accused of tossing a 5-year-old boy from the third floor at Mall of America in Minnesota on Friday.

He has been charged with attempted homicide.

He was taken into custody in the transit station at the Mall of America and is being held at the Bloomington Police Department, according to a press release.

Aranda is from the Minneapolis metro area, police said.

Police responded to the scene just after 10 a.m. where they gave the child CPR until emergency services arrived.

Minneapolis resident Brian Johnson was at the mall when it happened. He told the Daily News he didn’t see the child fall, but walked up shortly after to see the him lying “motionless” in a “pool of blood.”

Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said the child suffered “significant injuries." The child was taken to the Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis where Potts said the mother had joined them during a press conference Friday afternoon.

Police said there was no link between the suspect and the child or family, saying it was an “isolated incident."

The Mall of America shared the following statement with The News on Friday evening:

“This was a senseless act and words cannot truly express our profound shock and sadness. Our immediate and only concern is for the wellbeing of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident. We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance. We know that this is a concerning event for all of us. As the Bloomington Police Department continues to investigate how and why this isolated incident happened, we will provide our full cooperation.”

Bloomington Police, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Crime Lab and the Metro Transit Police are still investigating the incident.

Child tossed from 3rd floor at Mall of America; suspect had been arrested there twice before

A 5-year-old boy plummeted three floors Friday after being pushed or thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America, according to witnesses, and a 24-year-old man with a history of causing disturbances at the mall was in custody.

Bloomington Police Chief Jeffrey Potts said police don't think there is any relationship between the man and the family of the child, who suffered life-threatening injuries. He was being treated at a hospital, but no details on his condition were immediately available.

Witnesses told police that the child may have been pushed or thrown from the mall's third level to the first floor, Potts said. He said the suspect immediately took off running but was quickly found and arrested at the mall.

A witness said a woman screamed that her child was thrown from the balcony.

Brian Johnson told WCCO-TV the woman was screaming, "Everybody pray, everybody pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge."

Police said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, of Minneapolis, was being held on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Aranda's criminal record includes two convictions in 2015 for obstruction of the legal process/interfering with a peace officer, as well as convictions for fifth-degree assault, trespassing and damage to property.

Court records show Aranda was arrested on July 4, 2015, after police said he matched the description of a man throwing things off the upper level of the Mall of America to the lower level. Police say Aranda refused to give his name and resisted arrest. Aranda also was accused of walking into a mall store and sweeping his hand across a display table, breaking glasses.

In October 2015, Aranda was accused of throwing glasses in Twin Cities Grill in the mall. The complaint says Aranda approached a woman who was waiting for the restaurant to open and asked her to buy him something. The woman refused, and Aranda allegedly threw a glass of water in her face and a glass of tea that struck her leg. Aranda was under a trespass notice at the time banning him from the mall until July 4, 2016.

It wasn't immediately clear if Aranda had an attorney.

Police don't have an idea about possible motive, Potts said.

"At this point we believe this is an isolated incident," the chief said. "We're actively trying to figure out why this occurred."
No details were immediately available about the child's condition.

The 4.2-million-square-foot Mall of America is in Bloomington, about 10 miles south of Minneapolis. The mall, which opened in 1992, has more than 520 stores and is visited by 40 million visitors annually, according to its website . Attractions include Nickelodeon Universe indoor amusement park and Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium .

It has occasionally been the scene of crimes or disruptive protests, and the mall's website touts extensive security training for its officers.

In 2015, the al-Shabab extremist group called for an attack on the Mall of America and other shopping centers in a video. Al-Shabab fighters attacked an upscale Kenyan mall in 2013 in a siege that left 67 people dead. In response, the Mall of America said it was tightening security, and that some of the extra precautions would be noticeable to guests and others would not be.

A Minneapolis man was sentenced to 15 years in prison last year for attacking two brothers at the Macy's department store at the mall. The man said he was inspired by the Islamic State when he stabbed the brothers in a dressing room area in November 2017.

A teenage brawl erupted at the mall the day after Christmas in 2011. The melee was caught on YouTube, but police concluded the brawl — the worst case of violence at the mall in more than 15 years — was not organized through social media as initially feared. Ten people were arrested for disorderly conduct, including four juveniles.

Associated Press writers Amy Forliti and Doug Glass contributed. News researcher Jennifer Farrar contributed to this report from New York.

Latest. Assault turned to attempted murder....

5-year-old allegedly thrown off balcony at Mall of America being treated: Police

By JOSHUA HOYOS
Updated 2 hours ago

The 5-year-old who was thrown from the third floor of the Mall of Americain Minnesota continues to be treated for life-threatening injuries as details emerge about the attack, police said.

"This was a tough one," Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said in a press conference on Saturday afternoon, describing the scene upon his arrival at the mall on Friday as "gut wrenching."

On Friday, 24-year old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda allegedly threw the child, who has not been identified, from the third floor of the mall, police said. The child was with at least one of their parents at the time of the incident.

"This is just under a 40-foot fall," Potts told reporters. He noted that there were many eyewitnesses and video of the incident.

Police do not think there is a relationship between Aranda and the child, but the Minneapolis resident has a history with the police, including a July 2015 incident where he threw an object from one of the floors at the same mall. Aranda was arrested for obstruction, disorderly conduct and damage to property, according to the Bloomington Police.

Later that same year, he had two altercations at local restaurants, including one in which he refused to pay his bill. In a separate 2015 incident, Aranda threw a glass at an employee at a restaurant and was arrested and charged with trespassing, fifth-degree assault, obstructing the legal process and disorderly conduct, police said.

On Saturday, Potts declined to give specifics about Aranda's mental health but said some of the previous cases had been handled in mental health courts. Potts also pointed out that there had been prior convictions, and said that Aranda had previously been on a trespass notice at the Mall of America but that such notices usually expire after six-month or one-year increments - Aranda's prior arrests were in 2015.

Potts said prosecutors would finalize charges by Monday at noon.

ABC News' Olivia Rubin contributed to this report.

Emmanuel Aranda, Accused Of Throwing Boy From Balcony In Mall Of America, May Have Been Previously Charged In Chicago
By Jeremy Ross
April 13, 2019

Chicago (CBS) — Investigators say a 24-year-old man, who may have violent roots in Chicago, tossed a 5-year-old stranger off a third story balcony at Minnesota’s Mall of America.

The boy suffered serious injuries and is receiving medical care in Minneapolis.

First responders tended to the 5-year-old Friday who is said to have plummeted about 40 feet within the mall.

Law enforcement says Emmanuel Aranda forced the boy over the edge then ran. But, police eventually caught up with him.

They’ve had run-ins with the 24-year-old at least three times, including while he was at a mall restaurant, where police accused him of throwing a glass at one of the employees.

Most recently, authorities say Aranda refused to pay his bill at a restaurant in Bloomington, Minnesota.

That story sounds familiar to investigators in Chicago. Records show a man with the same name and birth date was accused of violence linked to two Golden Nugget family restaurants here.

Back in 2014, police say he threatened to slit the throat of an employee at the restaurant at Diversey and Elston.

But, at the Golden Nugget on Lawrence near Ravenswood, on Aug. 24, 2014, he was charged with a handful of crimes, including aggravated assault.

Police say Aranda was using the restaurant’s telephone to check funds on his debit card. A 39-year-old waitress told him she was going to call police if he did not pay his bill. He became enraged and, investigators say, he struck her with the phone.

A male customer tried to intervene, but police say he was hit in the head with a plate. Aranda then pulled out a large knife and chased the male customer around the restaurant threatening to stab him.

Police prepare to charge Aranda for the crime against the child. Meantime, a single rose rests where the boy landed and where crime tape and investigators once worked.

Charges could come Monday.

According to county records, the 24-year-old does not have an outstanding warrant issued in October 2016 for skipping court in the Golden Nugget case.

Charges: Man who threw 5-year-old off Mall of America balcony was 'looking for someone to kill'

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (FOX 9) - The man accused of throwing a 5-year-old boy off the third floor balcony at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota Friday told police he had come to the mall that day looking for someone kill.

Emmanuel Aranda, 24, of Minneapolis was charged Monday with first-degree attempted premeditated murder.

According to the charges, the victim’s mother said she and her son were with a friend and a friend’s child outside the Rain Forest Café on the third floor of the mall around 10:15 a.m. when Aranda, whom they did not know, approached them.

Aranda came very close to them, so the victim’s mother asked if they were in the way and should move. Aranda then picked up her son, threw him off the balcony and fled the scene.

Police estimate the child fell approximately 39 feet and landed in front of multiple people. Officers rendered aid to the boy and he was taken to Children’s Hospital. Medical personnel said he had multiple fractured bones in his arms and legs, was bleeding from the head and had massive head trauma.

A witness tried to keep Aranda from leaving the scene, but he pushed them away and continued running. Officers located him waiting for the light rail train and arrested him.

After his arrest, Aranda agreed to speak with officers and admitted he was the one who had thrown the boy off the balcony. He said he had come to the mall that day looking for someone to kill, but it did not “work out.” He said he planned to kill an adult because they usually stand near the balcony, but he chose the 5-year-old boy instead. He did not say why.

Aranda said he had been coming to the mall for several years and had made efforts to talk to women in the mall, but had been rejected. He said that rejection caused him to lash out and be aggressive.

Surveillance video from the mall showed Aranda walking on the third floor and looking over the balcony several times before approaching the victim and his mother.

“This crime has shocked the community,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement. “That a child, with his mother, at a safe public area like a mall, could be violently attacked for no reason is chilling for everyone."

The 5-year-old boy remains in critical condition, according to the criminal complaint. A GoFundMe page set up for the boy said he is stable condition and had a peaceful sleep Sunday. The GoFundMe already raised more than $600,000 for the child, surpassing the stated goal of $500,000.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office released the following statement on behalf of the victim's family, "The family sincerely appreciates the outpouring of support from the community. The child is currently in critical condition and the family is beginning a long journey to recovery."

Statement from Mall of America

"As the criminal case moves forward with today's charges in the wake of Friday's senseless incident, our thoughts and primary concerns remain with the victim and his family during this difficult time. We are grateful for the efforts of all the first responders involved - including guests and tenants - for their immediate actions and the outpouring of concern shown by so many for this young child and his family. For those who have left gifts, flowers and messages of love at the Mall, we thank you. Please know we will keep these items safe and handle them according to the family's wishes."

Police: Man threw 5-year-old off Mall of America balcony because women were rejecting him

Posted Apr 16 2019 07:12AM EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The man charged with throwing a 5-year-old boy off a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America told police he was angry at being rejected by women at the Minnesota mall and was “looking for someone to kill” when he went there last week, according to a criminal complaint Monday.

Emmanuel Aranda, 24, of Minneapolis, is charged with attempted premeditated first-degree murder in Friday’s attack . The child plunged almost 40 feet and is fighting for his life in a Minneapolis hospital with head trauma and multiple broken bones.

Aranda has two past convictions for assaults at the mall, both in 2015, including one in which he threw a glass of water and glass of tea at a woman who refused to buy him something. Aranda at one point was banned from the mall.

Court records show that Aranda had been ordered to undergo psychological evaluation or treatment after the earlier mall assaults.

The boy’s mother told police that Aranda came up very close to her group as they stood outside the Rainforest Cafe restaurant. She said she asked him if they were in his way and should move, and he picked up the child without warning and threw him off the balcony, according to the complaint.

Police caught Aranda on a light rail train at the mall waiting for it to leave. They said he admitted throwing the child from the balcony and said he had come to the mall a day earlier seeking to kill someone but it did not “work out.” Aranda originally said he planned to kill an adult before choosing the child instead, the complaint said.

“Defendant indicated he had been coming to the Mall for several years and had made efforts to talk to women in the Mall, but had been rejected, and the rejection caused him to lash out and be aggressive,” the complaint said.

Aranda was born in Chicago, where Cook County court documents showed a 2014 arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at a Golden Nugget restaurant in the city. A case summary said Aranda beat a restaurant employee with a telephone when she threatened to call police about his bill, and pulled a knife on a bystander who intervened. He ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months’ probation.

The family of the Minnesota child has asked for privacy. A GoFundMe page set up for the child, named Landen, had attracted nearly $600,000 in donations as of Monday.

The page’s creator, Noah Hanneman, posted Sunday that Landen had a “peaceful sleep and is still fighting his courageous battle.”

MOA is a gun free zone.

I was there last night. There is a pile of toys by the escalator on the first floor where he hit the ground. A couple cops were standing guard with a dog.

I’m not certain what the criteria should be for admission but we need to bring asylums back. The federal funding for mental health asylums was cut to nothing in 1992. Think about all the crazy shit that has happened since that time. Unfortunately the cuts were promoted by “civil libertarians” but look at the perps who now walk the streets.

Obviously, this should be a state, not federal issue but there needs to be a repository of some kind and a process to eradicate this kind of trash from society. The greatest question is how to do it properly? There were institutions very early in American history so no one can say asylums were not endorsed by those who understood the Constitution. At what point is one stripped of their rights due to mental inadequacies and for the protection of the general populace? Was Ken Kesey right or just another rabble rouser? Are the laws already on the books to put these imbeciles away and, conveniently ignored, or do laws need to be put in place? Lastly, WHY DON’T POLITICIANS EVER SPEK TO THESE POINTS?

I've been following on Facebook and the prayer groups claim he is in stable condition with no apparent spinal cord damage or brain damage. Many surgeries still ahead.

How can you be prepared for something like this?

Don't stand near any public balconies?

Stay away from the mall?

Go into full defense mode and draw your gun EVERY time someone gets near you or your kin?

This perp is bat-shit loony.

Unless he is in solitary with protective custody, he will not last long in prison.

It's called situational awareness, of course you can't see the unknown but you can be prepared to take action if a situation arises.

I'm not arguing in terms of ingenuity, but should we not permit the victims to inflict injuries commensurate, and subsequently implement Obamacare at it's best?

Also, I lack confidence in NASA's current capability of achieving 22 miles, let alone executing a successful perp-jettison.

And any respectable .gov food program would provide cheese rather than pork products.

What Happened To Landen Hoffmann?

Child thrown off mall ledge fights for his life. The name of the victim was released and there's worldwide attention to the safety of one of America's biggest shopping malls.

The asshole who threw a five year old boy over the edge of the Mall of America is facing attempted murder and felonious assault. The suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The suspect is assured at least 10 years in the iron college. He is banned from the mall. He will have to pay for all the victim's medical bills and be ordered to pay for any improvements to the mall.

The suspect will be likely beaten down by some angry intern who may never see his children grow up. Those in the iron college hate child abusers, child molesters, rapists and gang bangers who assassinate rivals. That scumbag will get his while behind the bars.

The mall is working on installing barriers and tightening up security in areas where children could be injured. The area is going to do an evaluation of its safety plans.

The incident grabbed the nation's attention.

Now that we have a name to the victim, I can only assume the far-white will start blaming someone other than this asshole.

The victim was a little white boy. The asshole was a Black man.

I would expect somewhere in the far-white bubble this will became a litmus test on how the junk food media covers stories like this. The far-white will drive up the narrative that the criminal's race and the victim's race are important.

The far-white agitator Colin Flaherty is licking his chops. He loves stories like this. He can use this in his fight against anti-White violence. He wrote the white nationalist books "White Girl Bleeds A Lot" and "Don't Make The Black Kids Angry."

He certainly would take a liking to this situation.

I hate giving this turd attention. He's a vile sack of shit. The far-white embraces this scumbag's narrative that white people are under attack from angry Black people. He got them thinking that we're creating a violence paradox.

The victim, Landen Hoffmann has a long road to recovery. The young child was thrown off the ledge by this asshole from the third floor.

Hoffmann and the asshole do not know each other.

Asshole will face attempted homicide and destruction of property. "He was enjoying a day at the Mall of America with his mom and friend on Friday morning when a stranger maliciously grabbed him and threw him over the 3rd floor balcony for no apparent reason," the organizer wrote. "The family doesn't know him and are completely clueless as to why this monster would target their family with this heinous act of violence."

The asshole was allegedly banned from the mall numerous times for inappropriate behavior such as throwing things over the ledge. Somehow he wanted to send a message to the world.

A GoFundMe page was started and it's got over $500,000 in donations.

Supporters had pooled more than $443,000 by Sunday afternoon. The fundraiser was posted by Noah Hanneman, who says his wife and Hoffman's mom are best friends.

"Thank you so much everybody for your continued support through donations and prayers! We are all completely overwhelmed with the love and support that has come our way during this tragic time," wrote Hanneman Sunday afternoon. "He had a peaceful sleep and is still continuing to fight his courageous battle, he’s a strong survivor!"

Again, why are we hurting our children?

That little boy never did anything to this guy. Why on earth would he deliberately hurt a child who only wanted to enjoy a day with his family at the mall?

I'm not arguing in terms of ingenuity, but should we not permit the victims to inflict injuries commensurate, and subsequently implement Obamacare at it's best?

Also, I lack confidence in NASA's current capability of achieving 22 miles, let alone executing a successful perp-jettison.

And any respectable .gov food program would provide cheese rather than pork products.
I was referring to the guy who jumped/freefell out of a balloon that went many miles in the stratosphere? I guessed 22 miles though it may have been less. Heck, do the 'Nam interview from a helicopter, don't care really. But justice must be served. A friend who did many tours in Nam did do such "interviews" and whether or not he got the answer he wanted, all the interviewees did the swan dive.

(FOX 9) - The family of the 5-year-old boy who was thrown from the third floor balcony at the Mall of Americalast Friday has "good news to share with you on this Good Friday."

"Our miracle child is showing real signs of recovery. New test results have been positive, though he remains in intensive care with a long road ahead. Our faith in God, and our Savior Jesus, is strong, and we are gaining more reason for optimism day by day. We continue our appeal for privacy as we focus on our son, and thank you for respecting our wishes. Just know that we absolutely feel your overwhelming love, prayers and support, for they seem to be working. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts."

The man accused of throwing the boy, Emmanuel Aranda, 24, is charged with attempted murder. According to the charges, the boy's mother said she and her son were with a friend and a friend’s child outside the Rainforest Café on the third floor of the mall around 10:15 a.m. when Aranda, whom they did not know, approached them.

Aranda came very close to them, so the boy's mother asked if they were in the way and should move.

He said he come to the mall on Thursday planning to kill an adult because they usually stand near the balcony, but it did not “work out.” He returned to the mall on Friday and chose the 5-year-old boy instead.

A GoFundMe online fundraiser has now raised more than $880,000. Organizers recently upped their goal to $1 million to allow more people to donate.

A P.O. Box has now been set up for those who want to send cards and well wishes to Landen and his family.

A recent update from the family has also debunked a photo circulating on social media of a mother in a surgical mask next to a boy in a hospital bed, saying it is not Landen and his mother. Landen's family is still seeking privacy and does not plan on releasing any photos during his recovery process.

They seem like a great family - the best of America. They haven't even said one thing publicly against the monster who did this. I'm glad to hear the boy is recovering and that their faith is strong.
