  • Ex-Cambridge Analytica employee Christopher Wylie, 28, spoke out Monday
  • He previously revealed firm had harvested profile data on Facebook users
  • Info was gathered with users' permission but sold in a violation of terms
  • Used the info to help Ted Cruz and Donald Trump target campaign ads
  • Now says he is 'taking responsibility' for his role in the campaign project

It's Time To Protect Yourself (And Your Friends) From Facebook

by Tyler Durden
Mon, 03/19/2018 - 21:20

Excerpted from Mashable's Damon Beres...

Remember the Marlboro Man? He was a sexy vision of the American west, created by a cigarette corporation to sell a fatal product. People knew this and used that product anyway, at great detriment to themselves and those around them who quietly inhaled toxic secondhand smoke, day into long night.

An agreement between states and tobacco companies banished the rugged cowboy at the end of the 1990s, but the symbol is useful even 20 years later as we contend with a less deadly but no less frightening corporate force.

Social networks that many of us signed up for in simpler times — a proverbial first smoke — have become gargantuan archives of our personal data. Now, that data is collected and leveraged by bad actors in an attempt to manipulate you and your friends.

The time for ignorance is over. We need social responsibility to counterbalance a bad product. The public learned in alarming detail this weekend how a Trump-aligned firm called Cambridge Analytica managed to collect data on 50 million people using Facebook. All, as the Guardian put it, to "predict and influence choices at the ballot box." Individuals who opted into Cambridge Analytica's service — which was disguised as a personality quiz on Facebook — made their friends vulnerable to this manipulation, as well.

There were better days on the social network. When you signed up for Facebook, it's likely because it was an alluring way for you to connect with old friends and share pictures. You hadn't ever imagined "Russian trolls" or "fake news" or, lord knows, "Cambridge Analytica."
...

Zuckerberg may have been assaulted from all sides, but we - his users - took more of a licking than he did.
That's because Facebook's past two years have been all about ethical and technological crises that hurt users most of all. A favorite editor of mine hated that word, "users," because it made it sound as though we were talking about something other than people. I can agree with that, but also see now that "users" is the word of moment: Facebook's problems extend forever out of the idea that we are all different clumps of data generation. Human life is incidental.
...

But just remember: There's no precedent for a social network of this size.
We can't guess what catastrophe it sets off next. Will a policy change someday mean it's open season on your data, even if that data has limited protections in the here and now?

That'll teach him! Woman gets revenge on an ex-classmate who bombarded her with inappropriate messages and a picture of his GENITALS by sending the entire chain to his grandma
  • American college student Tamira got an unexpected message from a former high school classmate she'd shared one class with
  • Hank informed her that he'd 'gained 50 pounds of muscle' and was earning a degree and finally felt worthy of her
  • She let him down gently but made it clear she wasn't interested
  • He continued to message her and, unprompted, sent her a photo of his genitals
  • He then turned nasty, cursing her out and telling her to kill herself for not responding favorably
  • Tamira looked up his grandma on Facebook and sent her his texts, though his grandmother did not react the way she'd hoped

Facebook Is a Government Surveillance Tool: Lionel Buries Hillary Apologist in this Epic Takedown
Lionel Nation

Published on Mar 21, 2018
PARENTAL ADVISORY. This gets rough, kids. Just the way I like it. Lionel dismembers yet another HRC proxy and shill and lets him have it with facts, unimpeachable logic and a splash of panache. Ain't the truth great.

[RT] London-based political strategy firm Cambridge Analytica has suspended CEO Alexander Nix who had boasted of global backroom influence. RT has hosted a debate on what the fallout of the unfolding Facebook data scandal could be. Richard Goodstein, a former advisor to both Bill and Hillary Clinton’s presidential election campaigns, went head-to-head with legal & media analyst and TV personality Lionel.

“It looks like it’s undisputed that they did things that ... were clearly against the law,” Goldstein said. “They either clearly went over the line or they went right up to it.”

The Democrat advisor insinuated that the Department of Justice would not act against CA as “Donald Trump was the beneficiary. I wouldn’t hold my breath on that happening.”

“The entire point is being missed here” Lionel shot back. “It’s not Cambridge Analytica, it’s that Facebook is a tool, a proxy, if you will, of the government! It’s a surveillance unit!”

“Facebook, Apple, everything that we do is sucking up every bit of information that we have,” Lionel warned. “Where has the world been? You’re living in a panopticon!” The previous few days had seen an online trend urging users to #DeleteFacebook.

Goldstein repeated claims that the “US intelligence community unanimously agreed that the Russians did meddle” and worked with WikiLeaks to leak emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta, claims that have never been proven.

Lionel dismissed the whole Russian meddling narrative “This yarn was devised by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton to explain how she lost a rigged election,” he said. “Whom can we get to explain this? Ah! The Russians!”

“I can’t believe this gentleman is repeating the same fantasy that Hillary Clinton is still doing,” he said. “Are you ever going to move on from that? Are you ever going to realise you lost?”

Special Counsel Robert Mueller “will present a case in black and white about what the Russians did and didn’t do,” Goldstein insisted. “And people who are clear-thinking will believe it, and people who have a bias going in will dismiss it.”

“Hillary Clinton is never going to be president. Get over it. Go and see a grief counselor,” Lionel hit back.

Stephen Bannon oversaw Cambridge Analytica's plans to collect data on millions of American voters from Facebook, whistleblower claims
  • Chris Wylie claims the firm used data to build psychological profiles on voters
  • Bannon approved spending almost $1million to acquire the data, Wylie said
  • Trump's ex-chief strategist was the firm's VP from June 2014 until August 2016
  • He identified anti-establishment messages that later became core part of Trump's campaign speeches

Thought deleting your Facebook was enough? Firm and its advertisers can still track you AFTER you remove your account - here's how to stop it
  • Facebook uses an advertising strategy called 'Audience Network' that allows brands to serve up targeted advertisements even when users move off the site
  • The practice is raising some eyebrows in the wake of Facebook's privacy row
  • Users can limit Facebook's ad tracking via their smartphone or web browser

Facebook Sued by Investors Over Voter-Profile Harvesting

Facebook Inc.’s failure to safeguard privacy was blamed in an investor lawsuit for a slump in its share price that followed the revelation user data was harvested without permission by a research firm connected to U.S. President Donald Trump.

The world’s largest social media network was sued in San Francisco federal court on Tuesday by shareholders in a class action who said they suffered losses after the disclosure that Cambridge Analytica, a U.K.-based firm that aided Trump, improperly obtained profile information on 50 million users.

Facebook fell as much as 5.2 percent to $175.41 Monday in New York, wiping out all of the year’s gains so far. It was the biggest intraday drop since Jan. 12. The stock dropped another 2.6 percent Tuesday to close at $168.15, after Bloomberg reported that the company is under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The suit would represent people who bought shares of Facebook from Feb. 3, 2017, when Facebook filed its annual report and cited security breaches and improper access to user data, through March 19, two days after a New York Times report revealed how data from Cambridge Analytica obtained through Facebook was used without “proper disclosures or permission.” The stock has tumbled more than 9 percent this week.

“We are committed to vigorously enforcing our policies to protect people’s information,” said Paul Grewal, deputy general counsel at Facebook. “We will take whatever steps are required to see that this happens,” he said in a statement.

‘Potential Culpability’
Throughout that period, “defendants made false or misleading statements and failed to disclose that Facebook violated its own data privacy policies by allowing third parties access to personal data of millions of Facebook users without their consent,” according to the complaint.

Darren Robbins, a securities class action lawyer who isn’t involved in the case, called the Cambridge Analytics case “troubling” for Facebook and the country overall.

“They have potential culpability in a number of areas,” Robbins said about the social network by phone before the lawsuit was filed. “Whether liability from users, government regulators or investors follows, there are implications for our society given the unique position Facebook occupies in the daily lives of Americans.”

Investors may be able to sue Facebook successfully if they can show the company induced them to invest based in part on false, misleading or incomplete information regarding practices that might have averted the user privacy issues, Robbins said.

“That is dependent upon the representations made about the types of actions Facebook has taken to protect this information,” he said. “If the representations made publicly are inconsistent with what actually occurred, is there potential liability? The answer is yes.”

Facebook’s Long History of Resolving Privacy Claims on the Cheap

News of the improper data collection is the latest in a string of discomforting revelations about the ways in which the network may have been used to affect the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Facebook is under fire over the proliferation of “fake news” on its site and Russian actors leveraging the platform for propaganda.

The shares dropped Monday amid an outcry over the data collection, which occurred with a U.K. professor claiming to be gathering information for "academic" purposes. Instead, it was used to develop techniques deployed by the Trump campaign, in a venture backed by wealthy Republican donor Robert Mercer.

Personality Quiz
Facebook said on Friday that the professor, Aleksandr Kogan, asked people to take a personality quiz that he claimed was for academic purposes. A total of 270,000 signed up for the quiz, and in doing so permitted Kogan to access data for both those individuals and their friends, exposing profiles of 50 million people, according to the New York Times.

“The claim that this is a data breach is completely false,” Grewal, the deputy general counsel, wrote in a March 17 post. “People knowingly provided their information, no systems were infiltrated and passwords or sensitive pieces of information were stolen or hacked.”

Although the quiz didn’t violate Facebook’s rules at the time, Kogan breached them by passing that data along to Cambridge Analytica, Facebook said. The company discovered the misuse in 2015 and shut off the professor’s access and asked the research company to certify that it had deleted the data at issue.

The social network said Friday it learned the information wasn’t erased, and Cambridge Analytica denied on Saturday that it still had access to the data. The research firm used the data to create tools and techniques that were put to use in the 2016 election campaign, according to the New York Times.

The social network is also battling privacy claims from consumers in San Francisco federal court over the use of biometric data, and last month it agreed to pay $35 million to settle claims that its officers and directors overstated prospects for earnings and growth in the mobile market ahead of its 2012 initial public offering. The company didn’t admit to any wrongdoing.

Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic have called on Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg to explain. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey opened a civil probe and Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen has issued a written inquiry to Facebook to answer questions about the matter.

European Union Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova plans to meet with Facebook officials in Washington on March 21. She called the data misuse “horrifying, if confirmed” and “not acceptable.”

The case is Yuan v. Facebook Inc., 3:18-cv-01725, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).

How Facebook guesses users' political leanings and labels them on a scale from 'very liberal' to 'very conservative' (but did it get YOURS right?)

  • Facebook labels users as either moderate, liberal or conservative
  • The social media platform's users can also be 'very liberal' or 'very conservative'
  • The company makes assumptions about users' beliefs based on their 'likes'

Fakebook On Its Way To Zero

by globalintelhub
Wed, 03/28/2018 - 13:12

Summary
  • Facebook's dirty tricks have been exposed, they will never completely regain the trust of users.
  • Alternatives are set to cannibalize the social media model, pioneered by Facebook.
  • Costs of security features, auditing information, and loss of ad revenue will make Facebook less profitable.
Finally, Facebook (FB) has been exposed for the fraud that it is. There has never been such an inflated market cap based on nothingness, just hype. Steve Jobs successfully hyped up Apple (AAPL) but unlike Fakebook, Apple actually makes products, and they have a huge following.

Here we will elaborate on several key points that we've been saying for years, but now maybe the market is listening:
  • Facebook (FB) has a weak underlying business model. Users do not like to see advertisements therefore management will be driven to measures such as grey hat (or even black hat) methods to obtain data and use data in ways in conflict with users.
  • Facebook (FB) is ultimately and primarily a tool of the intelligence agencies (primarily but not exclusively the CIA) and furthers a larger agenda as part of the DOD's "Information Awareness" program, more than it is a hot business model.
  • There are thousands of social media networks, in fact Ning offers users a platform to create their own social network. The only thing unique about Facebook (FB) is that it is the most used and trusted network, but that all is hanging on the thin thread of users trust, which has now completely evaporated.
  • Mark Zuckerberg is an unethical tricky leader that cannot change, he is detached from reality, has no vision, no understanding of what his customers want, and perhaps most importantly; stole Facebook (FB) from Winkelvoss.
  • Facebook became spammy in 2010, the amount of bot manipulation is highly under-reported. Fake accounts are bought and sold in a black market, software is sold that can create fake accounts by the hundreds, thousands.
Based on the above, we believe the real value of Facebook (FB) is about $10 - $20 per share. Let's use the 'toplist' format as promoted by Facebook (FB) itself:

"Top Reasons Facebook (FB) is going down fast"
  • Users are abandoning their accounts, deleting them, and it has become 'cool' to delete your Fakebook account. #DeleteFacebook
  • Mark Zuckerberg originally referred to his users as "Dumb Fucks" this meme is now being circulated.
  • Cambridge Analytica is not unique. This is the underlying model of Facebook's business model (if you can call it a 'model').
  • Facebook's IPO disaster was a sign of things to come.
  • Lawsuits are just the beginning. People are angry.
  • Cook County is suing for 'fraud' - this is a public government suing Facebook for SERIOUS violations. Fraud isn't something you can just get over. It takes years to make a reputation and minutes to lose it.
  • According to Edward Snowden, Facebook is a surveillance company.
  • Once the genie is out of the bottle, hard to put back. Perhaps some users didn't think this was going on and others didn't care. But now there's a movement to control how Facebook spies on you.
So if this trend continues - what should investors do? Sell, that's for starters. Contact an attorney who knows Securities if you are a shareholder. That's the good news. Finally, unless you like being tracked in your every move, delete your Facebook (FB) account. Because that's the only real remedy. You can't block Zuck:

Remember one thing, Facebook (FB) users - you use FB with your consent. This author deleted FB years ago, as have millions of others. If you really like the idea of social network there are hundreds of others. Or set one up yourself for sharing family photos with Grandma. JomSocial can turn any Joomla site into a social media site.

What do the FTC, German government, Cook County Illinois and many others have in common? They are all looking into the abuses of Facebook (FB).

Lawsuits are nothing new, one could say that Facebook (FB) itself was born out of a lawsuit (with Winkelvoss).

The point here is investors that this is the beginning of a crap storm that has been brewing for years but it didn't metastasize until now.
Facebook is going to zero. If you're long get out now before it drops further. There's nothing supporting the stock except hopers and hot air.

One last thing, Fake News started on Facebook (FB) see articles here, here, and here. Since the Trump election there has been a backlash on 'Fake News' sites, which Facebook is #1. It's a platform for Fake News!

News existed before Fakebook and will continue to exist. Facebook is to the internet was the Laser Disc was to the home movie industry. It's outdated, it's bloated, it's hype - there's nothing there. Move on, drones. Nothing to see here.

Facebook finally lets you remove third-party 'vampire apps' in BULK to prevent them from using your data: Here's how to clean up your settings
