“I love the affiliate model,” says David Osorio of CrossFit South Brooklyn. “I love the freedom that it grants us as business owners to express our vision and our business.”

Osorio has three guiding principles for his business. He and the team at CFSBK strive to make their affiliate professional, inclusive and effective.

Osorio’s recommendations for being professional are simple: “Be humble. Be prepared. Be honest.”

The latter two principles—being inclusive and effective—are fundamentally intertwined.

“Ultimately, it comes down to heart,” he explains. “Do people feel welcome, safe, and do they feel like this is a place where they’re gonna get better?”

Following these three principles is more important to Osorio than having the biggest space or the fanciest equipment.

“People don’t come for the equipment; they come for the experience,” he says.

We are almost there. If you made it this far, congratulations!

Today's practice is all about finding balance. We all have those days were we feel 'off', like either something is missing or something is way too overwhelming. It is in those days that we are being challenged to stay centered and true to ourselves. It is in those days were finding balance is a must.

True balance is not easy to create. Therefore, it is entirely different from person to person. Your center point is unique to you and you are the only one capable of finding it. I hope this practice can help you in finding it.

On January 27, 2012, The President's Challenge sent out emails to its participants saying that the website was functional as of January 24, 2012, and asked participants to reset their user passwords.

Awards

The Council publishes guidelines for awards that are given out. They are the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, the National Physical Fitness Award, and the Participant Physical Fitness Award. However, it has been announced that the Physical Fitness Test on which these awards are based will no longer be available after the 2012--2013 school year. Additionally, there is the Active Lifestyle Award for staying active[10] and the Presidential Champions Award for raising one's amount of activity...

Jim had a chance to sit down with one of our long-time friends, Phil Stevens, at the recent Reebok Record Breakers meet. Phil has been a co-host of the Iron Radio podcast for 10 years, and owns a small, but profitable, harcore gym where he only takes on the clients he wants to work with. That's a situation that every trainer/coach would love.
He had just successfully returned to the platform after a couple for major surgeries, including a hip replacement, the day before this episode was recorded.

Intermittent Fasting vs Time Restricted Eating: Which is Best

Time-restricted eating (TRE) is essentially fasting, or a type of intermittent fasting, but focuses on when to eat, rather than what to eat - popular as “restricted eating” seems less scary than “fasting”

The time constraints of Time Restricted Feeding vary anywhere from a 12 hour eating window, an 8 hour eating window, all the way to 4 hours - refers to when eating is limited to a certain number of hours each day (1)

Weight Loss vs Hormonal Benefits

According to researchers at the Regulatory Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, when we eat may be as important – or even more important – than what we eat

*These guys from the Salk Institute are big on time restricted eating and the following study was to prove how effective it is*

Study

Fed two sets of mice, which shared the same genes, gender and age, a diet comprising 60 percent of its calories from fat (like eating potato chips and ice-cream for all your meals)

One group of mice could eat whenever they wanted, consuming half their food at night (mice are primarily nocturnal) and nibbling throughout the rest of the day

The other group was restricted to eating for only eight hours every night; in essence, fasting for about 16 hours a day. Two control groups ate a standard diet comprising about 13% of calories from fat under similar conditions

After 100 days, the mice who ate fatty food frequently throughout the day gained weight and developed high cholesterol, high blood glucose, liver damage and diminished motor control, while the mice in the time-restricted feeding group weighed 28% less and showed no adverse health effects despite consuming the same amount of calories from the same fatty food

Further, the time-restricted mice outperformed the ad lib eaters and those on a normal diet when given an exercise test (2)

The difference between the two is more of a verbal approach as the benefits you receive from TRE are those that you would experience from fasting, i.e. reduced insulin, increased hgh, etc.

However, the main goal of TRE seems to be focused mainly on weight loss and reducing your overall caloric intake
Reduced Caloric Intake

One study, following “time restricted eating,” found that when healthy adult men limited their eating to about a 10-hour window, it reduced the number of calories they ate each day by about 20%
