What Fasting Does to Your Immune System - Superhero Cells: Thomas DeLauer

Cell Regeneration

A study from USC found that prolonged fasting (2-3 days) can reset and regenerate the immune system - resulted in the depletion of white blood cells and triggered stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells

Found that white blood cells are broken down during fasting, which in turn forces the stem cells in your body to produce more (1)

Insulin and Immune Health

People with insulin resistance have cells throughout their bodies that don’t use insulin effectively - means the cells have trouble absorbing glucose, which causes a buildup of sugar in their blood.

Research from the Journal of Immunology found that high levels of insulin prevent a type of immune cell called regulatory T cells – or Tregs – from doing their job to suppress inflammation

T cell, also called T lymphocyte, type of leukocyte (white blood cell) that is an essential part of the immune system - originate in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus (2)

Fasting and Insulin

When you fast for an extended period of time, the fat deposits that have accumulated over time become the fuel that cells need to operate. As a result, the size of the excess fat droplet gets smaller over time.

As the size of the lipid droplet in muscle and liver cells decrease, those cells become more responsive to insulin

Autophagy

Autophagy is a natural process in which your body removes toxins and estrogenic chemicals and recycles damaged cell components

In the brain, upregulation of autophagy is strongly neuroprotective while disruption of autophagy causes neurodegeneration.

In the liver, upregulation of autophagy increases lipolysis (fat usage) and insulin sensitivity, while disruption of autophagy leads to prediabetes and metabolic syndrome (3,4)

Study

A study looking at liver cells found that the number of autophagosomes increased 300% after 24 hours of fasting, and a further 30% around 48 hours of fasting - began to decline after 48 hours (5)

Ketone Production and Inflammation

The body begins, on average, burning ketones between 24-48 hours of fasting - BHB, in particular, has been found to benefit the immune system

A study from the Yale School of Medicine found that exposing human immune cells to BHB following 2 days of fasting resulted in a reduced inflammatory response

BHB blocks NLRP3 inflammasome by preventing K(+) efflux and reducing ASC oligomerization and speck formation - potassium efflux, ASC, and speck formation are common triggers of NLRP3 (6,7)

Digestive Health

Fasting acts as a “digestive reset” by giving the digestive tract time to rest from breaking down and absorbing food and helps it strengthen its mucosal lining - About 65% of the body's energy must be directed to the digestive organs after a meal

This reduces intestinal inflammation and improves motility - leads to better nutrient absorption and improved bowel movement

“You have to change up your workouts more.”

“You have to eat more protein.”

“You have to increase your time under tension.”

“You have to use more/less weight in your training.”

If you’re looking for advice on building muscle, you’ve probably heard plenty of one-liners like those.

If you keep looking, you’ll hear a lot more. And, after it all, you’ll probably wind up like most people–confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed by a sea of contradictory tips, “hacks,” strategies, and shortcuts, with no idea who to believe and what to do next.

Well, I have good new for you:

Out of all the possible things you could know about diet and training, 20% are going to give you 80%+ of your results.

In fact, I’d go as far as saying that the average person looking to build a lean, muscular, strong physique can learn everything they need to know in 7 to 8 hours of reading. (And that’s what I try to provide in my books.)

Don’t get me wrong–I’m all for continuing to learn and improve, but if you don’t manage your “information flow” properly, you can easily fall into the trap of “analysis by paralysis.”

So, this episode isn’t going to teach you everything you need to know, but it’s going to give you a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of muscle building. Put these five principles into use and you will see results.

This ab workout made me SO SORE but I was NOT SORRY as Demi Lovato would say! Guys, this is a hard core routine that will sculpt, tone, and tighten your upper abs, lower abs, midsection, and overall core. I'm put together some of my favorite ab exercises full of POP Pilates flair and I promise you that you will BURN so good!

Make sure that when you are in Pilates Stance, your head, neck and shoulders are lifted off of the mat! Your head should really be just floating on top of your shoulders. It should not feel heavy if you're engaging your upper abs and pressing your lower back into the mat!

Remember, even if you're doing my workouts to achieve a flat belly or a six pack or Victoria's Secret model abs, the whole point of exercise is BEYOND the physical. When you do Blogilates, it's about how confident and happy you will feel! The flat abs are just a side benefit! Got it!? Love you!
