Malia Manuel's scary experience with the ledge at North Point 2018

Malia keeps her cool in a very dicey situation. She copped a few waves on the head which pushed her back very quickly, toward the ledge at North Point, in round 1, heat 6. The water patrol were already heading there before she got so close, but they couldn't grab her on the first take. After picking Malia up on the second round, they hit a huge rock on the way to safety and Malia ended up losing grip of the sled and back in the soup. She ended up safe after her harrowing and scary experience, with only a damaged board, which she swapped later in the heat. PHEW!

Did you notice how the original jetski - did not do a runaround to pick her up again after he hit the large boulder/rock? It must have been damaged, as they headed for the shore. Another jetski from almost out the back had to get to her and pick her up.

I have had a similar situation happen at Angourie Point where my legrope broke on a set wave. The board just glided happily on the white water to the sand, no damage, but I was pushed by more waves on the head and the prevailing current towards the ledge known as 'life and death'. I had to get outta there or else. My only option was to swim out past the breaking waves, and all the way back out into the line-up, where a fellow surfer let me hang on to his board to recover. After sometime I swam direct left to the rocks to get in, so as to not rinse and repeat that experience. I have a scar on my left hand to this day, from banging a rock on the way in.

“Muscles don’t grow in the gym.”

I’m sure you’ve heard that old bodybuilding adage before.

Well, there’s truth in it.

Weightlifting alone doesn’t make your muscles bigger and stronger. That’s what happens after the workouts.

That’s why the work that your body does to repair the stress and damage caused by training is just as important as the work you do in the gym to stress and damage your muscles.

The bottom line is if you’re not fully recovering from your workouts, you’re going to gain muscle and strength slower than you should.

This goes beyond muscle soreness, too.

The presence or absence of soreness is a factor to consider, but it’s not the acid test of post-workout recovery. Just because you’re not sore doesn’t mean your body is ready for another hard workout (and, on the flip side, just because a muscle group is sore doesn’t mean it can’t be trained again).

You see, heavy weightlifting places a lot of stress on the body that goes beyond muscle damage. It impacts your joints, glycogen stores, and nervous and endocrine systems, and it leaves a residue of systemic fatigue and inflammation that accumulates over time.

Your body does an excellent job of setting all this right, though, if you give it what it needs, which boils down these five steps:

1. Eat enough calories
2. Eat enough protein
3. Eat enough carbohydrate
4. Get ~8 hours of quality sleep every night
5. Take the right supplements

The rotator cuff muscles are the most overlooked and misunderstood shoulder muscles and are usually ignored in most workout programs. And unfortunately this will leave many in severe pain that will never go away!

The second episode of this year’s series checks in with reigning Fittest Woman on Earth Tia-Clair Toomey and her toughest competition, fellow Aussie Kara Saunders, in the fall months following the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games.

Get a look at the construction of CrossFit Kova, Saunders’ new affiliate in Brisbane, and see what both athletes do to relax and unwind during the offseason.

Toomey and her husband, Shane Orr, go crocodile spotting while on a trail run and do other very Australian things, such as racing kangaroos through residential areas.

This episode also offers Aussie vocabulary lessons. After the 2017 Invitational, Saunders taught us the word “shoey,” and in 2018, Toomey explains what Aussies mean when they say “woop woop.”

But it’s not all fun and games, and both athletes keep their minds focused on the competition. Toomey reflects on the previous seasons and says the biggest changes in her performance between 2016 and 2017 came from her mindset.

“When it comes to the CrossFit Games, it’s all mental,” she explains.

If that adage proves true for Saunders, too, 2018 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Games spectators.

“For the first time ever, I believe in myself properly, and no matter what happens, it’ll be a good year as long as I can keep my head on straight,” Saunders says.

4 SET & SUPERSET EVERY EXERCISE

Lying leg curls 15 reps

Walking side lunges( with band) 10 steps & 10 squats at the end

Hack squats

Pause for 3 seconds with a complete stop at the bottom 15 reps
SS
High foot placement close stance 10 reps directly into low foot placement 10 reps

Seating leg extension toes pointed up 10 reps directly into toes pointed in (knees turned in ) 10 reps nonstop

Cable straight bar dead lift 15 reps

Superman’s on lying leg curl machine 15 reps 2 sec pause at the top
