Great Bodyboard Conditions At Uluwatu - 6 November 2018
Surfers of Bali

Published on Nov 8, 2018
The long, racing walls of Uluwatu's Racetrack section isn't always a good fit for bodyboarding, but under the right feet it looks pretty fun.

Swell size on the Bukit was smaller than the East Coast with shoulder to head high waves here at Ulu's and considerably smaller than that for other spots in the area.

Here’s How Long It Takes Your Body to Reverse the Damage of Smoking

Best Life
Diana Bruk

In case you haven’t heard, smoking is really, really bad for you. According to the Surgeon General’s Report, smoking causes one out of every four deaths from cardiovascular disease in the United States, making it the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. One recent study even found that having just one cigarette a day can significantly shorten your lifespan. In spite of that fact, the most recent statistics on smoking state that more than 15 of every 100 Americans aged 18 years or older currently smoke cigarettes, which adds up to about 37.8 million adults in the United States.

Luckily, you can reverse the effects of smoking by quitting. But, according to new research soon to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions in Chicago, it might take longer for your heart to bounce back than you’d think.

Researchers analyzed the lifetime smoking history of 8,700 participants of the Framingham Heart Study, and found that 70 percent of cardiovascular disease events such as stroke, heart attack, and and heart failure in current or former smokers occurred among those who had smoked a pack a day for 20 years. The results also showed that, contrary to popular belief, their risk of cardiovascular disease only decreased by 38 percent in the first five years after they quit. But how long did it take to for smokers’ heart health to return to those of non-smokers?

Sixteen years.

“These findings underscore the benefits of quitting smoking within five years, which is 38 percent lower risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other forms of cardiovascular disease risk compared to people who continue to smoke. We also found that cardiovascular disease risk remains elevated for up to 16 years for former smokers compared to people who have never smoked,” Meredith Duncan, a Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and author of the study said. “The bottom line is if you smoke, now is a very good time to quit.”

Sixteen years may seem like a long time, but think of it this way. While heart attacks can happen at any age, the risk increases significantly as you get older, and the average age for a first-time heart attack is 66 for men and 70 for women. A lot of smokers who are middle-aged like to say that it’s “too late to quit,” but it’s not. Even if you’re in your 50s, you can still largely reverse the effects of smoking by the time you become most vulnerable to heart disease.

There are other, more immediate benefits to quitting as well. Within two weeks of quitting, the blood circulation in your teeth and gums are similar to that of a non-smoker, your lung function has improved, and your heart attack risk has already started to drop. Best of all, while your cravings may be intense for the first few days, they get down to just two episodes lasting no longer than three minutes per day by the time you’re only ten days in.

So go ahead and bite the bullet! And if you feel like you’ve tried everything and still couldn’t quit, check out The Single Best Way to Stop Smoking You’ve Never Tried.

How DeLauer Builds a Workout Program (Joe Rogan Inspired) - Thomas DeLauer

I'm going to give you the tools that you need to create your own training split utilizing my philosophy. Time and time again, people try to piecemeal different workout programs together. Okay, they'll go on the internet and they'll find bits and pieces of Jim Stoppani's approach or another person's approach, and they try to just like hybridize them all together. What I want to do is I want to give you the basic outline and the understanding of what I do, and then you can take it and run with it. A lot of this came to life simply because of that video that Joe Rogan did with Firas Zahabi on his podcast, and I thought that it really made a lot of sense, and it reflected a lot of what I do personally, so I wanted to break this down, sort of expand upon what Joe Rogan and Firas Zahabi talked about, and give you the tools that you need.

Okay, so first off, let's go back and break down a little bit about what Joe Rogan and Firas Zahabi talked about. Firas Zahabi talked about his training methodology, what he uses with his MMA clients, and what have you. For the most part, he talked about rating of perceived exertion. He talked about how if you reduce your intensity with your training, you have more opportunities to train said body part. To break it down simply, he said rather than training to failure, train sub-maximally. Train like five or six reps instead of 10, almost to failure but not all the way to failure. Then, hit with more frequency, basically giving you more opportunities to hit said body part or hit said focus group. Basically, by training with a little less intensity, you are able to be more consistent.

The 80% rule implies that on average, I would say that delayed onset muscle soreness kicks in above this, okay? Above 80% is where we tend to find ourselves getting sore and unable to train that group the next day. If I trained my chest at 83%, I will probably be more sore on Tuesday, the next day. If I were to train at 80% or less, I'm more than likely able to still train that body part the next day. Now, here's the thing. That only truly applies concretely for intensity. Let me explain these variables for a second. We have to break our training down into four variables always, okay? We have volume, how much you're training, how much overall workload you're putting into the muscle in a given day, right? We have intensity, how hard you're training, what your actual intensity in as far as like how heavy you're going, frequency, how often you are hitting a body part, and duration, how long is your workout, usually more applicable to endurance or HIIT style training.

Okay, this is something that I've worked on for years. This is full body training with emphasis training, so basically, you're doing a full body focus with specific emphasis on different body parts. This is going to be, again, be applied for body composition or performance, which I'll make sense of in one second. Here's an example. Monday. Go into the gym, and you do a full body workout following this 80% rule, meaning you're training at six or seven reps out of 10, so not going to failure, full body, but you pick one of the above variables for one body part to put extra emphasis on.

Example, Monday, walk into the gym. I train my full body, but I decide I want to have focus on my legs today. What I will do is I will pick one variable that I want to add into my workout for my legs. Let's just say it's intensity. What that would look like is my full body routine is normal, and then I train my legs, and I'm going to go above 80% with my intensity on Monday. I'm not blasting my legs. I'm not going in and just hitting my legs. I'm not even putting a ton of focus on my legs. I'm putting a slight emphasis. I think there's a difference between focus and emphasis, a little bit of just an extra bit of attention to the legs, okay?

I can expand on this more, but I need some feedback from you, so if you liked this and you want me to expand on a specific component of it, I need you to put it down on the comments section so that i can review it and do another video on it. Again, this is a more advanced technique. I'm happy to do a simpler breakdown for someone that's maybe just getting started as well. As always, make sure you keep it locked in here on my channel. I know this is a little bit of a different realm from what I'm normally talking about, but I hope you enjoyed it. I'll see you in the next clip.

#123 - Matt and Scott Answer Your Questions: Q&A #4
Barbell Logic

Published on Nov 8, 2018
Matt and Scott answer your questions in Q&A #4. Listeners submitted questions via email and Instagram and the boys will tackle them over the course of several episodes.

This week they answer:

1) Donald Kavanaugh asks: What makes you rage?
For Scott, pretentious patrons at the local movie theater, apparently. Matt dodged the question.

2) Andy Roth asks: What kind of data does Matt have on SSOC client progress during online coaching?
Matt has hired a team of statisticians to review all the client data SSOC has been gathering, which will be published in the future on Starting Strength, but he offers one interesting tidbit: the average male SSOC client increases his squat almost 300% during the life of the training.

3) From Starting Strength superfan Tyler Austin: When training the general population, do you prefer the Press 2.0 or the Classic Press (a la Bill Starr with layback)?
Matt prefers a progression from strict press to 2.0, with intermediate steps if the client just can't get the timing of the hips down with the 2.0. Scott agrees, noting that unless his client is going to compete, he doesn't teach the Classic Press at all.

4) Stan Belot asks: How do you manage training while on business or vacation, especially when you don't have your regular equipment?
Scott says just get in the gym, do something as heavy as you can, and get out. The consistency is the important thing; you don't have to hit your numbers exactly. Matt adds that if you're on vacation and have been training regularly leading up to it, don't sweat it. One week of missed training is not going to hurt you. On the other hand, if you travel frequently for business, you need to figure out how to pack up your essentials and train wherever you can. Liquid chalk is your friend!

5) What macro-friendly foods have you found lately?
Scott likes the chicken kebab platter (double chicken), greek salad, and braised beans at Zoe's Kitchen. He likes the tsatiki sauce because it's pretty low fat. Matt likes greek-style yogurt in general as a replacement for fatty toppings such as sour cream, cream cheese, etc.

6) Bobby asks: How do you manage toddlers/young children in the gym?
Matt and Scott says let them in, set the safeties, teach them to avoid the platform, and set a good example by showing them that you work hard under the barbell to make your self harder to kill.

7) Greg Boltman asks: What is your process as a coach and organization to drive continuous improvement in your coaching and training programs?
The SSOC coaches communicate frequently via Slack, sharing case studies and strategies for managing various clients. Then there's reading. The most important thing, however, is seeing lots of reps on a regular basis. It's important to see different types of people too. Matt thinks that watching lots of reps gives the coach an edge which can be lost, so good coaches need to watch plenty of reps to keep their skills up.
