Every day I hear from people in their 40s and even 30s who are worried it’s too late to get into great shape.

If you’ve spent any time around these parts, you know this isn’t true. So long as you know what you’re doing with your diet and training, you don’t have to be in your 20s to build a body you can be proud of. You can do it just about any age, really.

There are a few things you have to do differently as you get older, though. The main thing that changes is your ability to recover from your workouts declines, and this often manifests in more muscle, joint, and tendon soreness after training, and particularly if you’re working hard in the gym.

Many middle-aged people aren’t prepared for this and think they can just grind through the pain like they did in college, but this usually leads to further injury, overtraining, and burnout.

My friend and fellow researcher and writer, Christian Finn, knows a thing or two about this himself. He’s over 40 himself and in great shape, has worked with thousands of people, and recently had to slog through a rather nasty bout of joint problems, and in this interview, I pick his brain on what happened and why, what he did about it, and what we can do to give our joints a break without sacrificing our hard-earned muscle.

It has been hard to figure out where to shoot the last few days. The wind has been mostly offshore on the East coast for breaks like Keramas, but the swell hasn't really showed up on that side of the island.

The West coast spots have been feeling the swell, but the wind hasn't been great.

So it was a bit lumpy at Echo this morning, but still clean enough for a few fun one's and the beach scene is always a good fallback

Every cloud has a silver lining, especially if it's a really big cloud that's actually a cyclone. This is not so great for Australia's North West - pretty damn great for Bali's East coast head-dip hunters.

The swell really filled in with the rising tide and the sets were crammed with punchy, clean waves at this East coast reef. The local boys were making the most of the hollow ones, but everyone was getting a crack at it - stoke and smiles all round.

Cyclone generated swells are generally shorter period compared to the long traveling ground swells we’re used to here in Bali. This usually means more waves more often, which is exactly what was going down at this East coast slab the other day.

There was a short window where the tide and wind aligned, and plenty of closeouts to deal with, but the ones that hit the reef in the sweet spot were …pretty sweet.

I started shooting at the Sandbar, but as the tide began pushing in the action moved over to Echo. It transformed from lumpy chest high wobblers into head high walls and the occasional barrel in less than 30 minutes.

With a medium sized swell and clean conditions I decided to double down and head to Canggu for the second day in a row. There were still plenty of waves at Echo, but once the tide started filling it was Pererenan Rivermouth that grabbed my attention.

The crowd was thick and there were plenty of little paddle battles on the main takeoff zone, but there were a tonne of waves with less intense patches up and down the beach.

I left at around midday with the wind starting to blow across the face a bit, but there was still plenty of shape in it and bunch of shredders out there tearing it up.
