Mystery Coins Unboxing! Fan Mail.
Junius Maltby

Published on May 5, 2017
A UK fan wanted to make my day - and he did. I have never owned a Pound coin, now I have several! Junius Maltby opens his first ever FAN MAIL. A nearly complete collection of various £1 coin designs from 1983 to 2017 among other examples of UK coinage! Including some SILVER.
From the sender: "Apparently 1.5-2 crowns was the weekly wage of a coal miner working at the coal face in my area in the 1930s-1940s. Given the area I am from what you have in your hand is 2 10 hour shifts working down a coal mine. 1.5-2 crowns was enough to put food on the table for a family of likely 4-6 (large families), buy booze, tobacco, clothing, pay the rent/mortgage and fuel (coal) for the household and maybe have a little left over to save if you were lucky.
Although half a crown in the grand scheme of things for me and you isnt much it was a lot when the family had relatively little.
Was told by my mother a story that her mother; (my grandmother and siblings) the best part of Christmas was getting a Half Crown each from their rich uncle.

Suppose that coins purchasing power was the equivalent of getting something like $2-300USD for Christmas from a modern perspective. I am not 100%, as I have said previously I find it difficult to relate to pre-decimal coinage even though I have people I can easily go and ask about it."

Coins, Wages, Cost of Living in England through History (Medieval times - Pre-War)
Junius Maltby

Published on May 9, 2017
Walk with Junius Maltby from the Medieval times through to Pre-War England (Britain) as we explore the coins, currency, wages, and costs of living in this culturally rich and important land. I am learning about these coins as an American. I had no exposure to British coinage in life. Only a handful of times did I ever even see a Pound coin. Recently a subscriber generously sent me some British coinage. Here I am not infatuated with it all.

I plan to gather at the very least, an example of each iconic coin from various periods in British history. They can be slicks and merely good condition - the more worn the better! I will know then that the coin extinguished debts numerous times, was carried by many, saved by some and eventually landed on my shelf as a display.

What an interesting and amazing coinage history there is with these varieties. Perhaps one of the most amazing pieces of information to glean from this video is the incredible value silver held in these time periods. The wages paid in silver and the amount of goods and services able to be acquired with the silver is incredible, as well as the silver gold ratio of which I was already all too familiar (16:1).

Enjoy the journey and thank you for stopping by!

Without Silver & Gold, Nations Fold.
Junius Maltby

Published on May 11, 2017
Every great nation, empire or civilization has historically used precious metals as units of trade in exchange for goods and services. As government debts mount, entitlements and liabilities expand, the pressure to dilute the content of the money increases. Speeches are given, dances by politicians are danced and excuses are made - ultimately the coins are diluted and eventually made of worthless material. 99% of the time - it happens every time.

Deep Survival: Lessons for investing and trading in the metals
By: Pining 4 the Fjords
I have been reading a fascinating book called Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales, recommended here at TFMR (thank you, Turdville) that is ostensibly a deep dive into why some people, and really certain types of people who show repeating patterns of behaviors and attitudes, repeatedly survive in dangerous, seemingly impossible life-threatening situations while other people, who do the opposite and display opposite behaviors or personalities, do not survive even in relatively mundane circumstances. It is quite compelling, because the situations are life and death.

Gold and Silver Bullion Coins See Sales “Explosion” In UK On “Wave Of Political Turmoil”
By: GoldCore
In a warehouse a dozen miles to the northwest of Cardiff, the Royal Mint is running its machines through the night to keep up with demand for one of the big beneficiaries of the last year’s political turmoil – gold and silver bullion. The 1,100-year-old Mint, based here since the 1960s, is producing 50 percent more gold bullion coins and bars than it was this time last year, director of bullion Chris Howard says, while its sales in January rose by a third.
