017 Mint Sales Set-up for Future Gains?

-- Published: Wednesday, 3 January 2018

By Rory Hall

If one is interested in picking up some numismatic coins that have the potential to carry some heavy premiums in the years to come 2017 could be one the years to add to your stack. Not all coins produced during 2017 will command high premiums in the future, and maybe not a single one will, but if one looks through the offerings at the US Mint, Perth Mint and Royal Canadian Mint I know there will be some diamonds in the rough that should be outstanding additions to any stack and come with the added bonus of being a very low mintage coin!

With the “big 3 Mint” numbers somewhat suffering, England’s Royal Mint does not report sales number, and some down right abysmal, a couple of the lower minted coins have already found their way into our vault with more to come within the next few weeks. Locating the lowest minted coins will be our focus as we comb the numbers of the individual coins.

The 2017 numbers are in: sales of precious metal bullion from the United States Mint are falling.

Sales of the American Gold Eagle, one of the world’s most popular gold bullion coins, were 300,500 ounces. This is a 10-year low.

The past year’s sales are consistent with average sales before the Financial Crisis and Great Recession. What is remarkable about these low numbers is their steepness, falling from an all-time high of 1.4 million ounces in 2009, and a 70% drop from 2016’s sales of 985,000 ounces.

Meanwhile, sales of American Eagle silver bullion coins (the world’s top seller) plummeted to 18 million ounces. That is still twice its average before the Financial Crisis and the Great Recession. Like its gold brethren, silver had a similar dramatic rise and fall. Soaring to record sales of 47 million ounces in 2015, they fell to 37.7 million in 2016 before tumbling to a ten year low in 2017.

And it’s not just the United States Mint. The Perth Mint, another large manufacturer of bullion coins, posted sales of 23,901 ounces of gold in November, down 46.4% from the previous month. And November’s lackluster numbers are down 56.3% year over year.

What gives? Several things.

Most of the buyers of government-made bullion coins are individual investors who want an alternative asset that hedges against any downturn in their portfolios of cash, stocks, and bonds. Because precious metals generally go up in value when currency goes down, bullion coins make a good insurance policy when the economy is forecast to be weak. But the global economy appears to be picking up steam at last after a slow recovery from the Financial Crisis and the Great Recession. In the United States, GDP growth is up, consumer confidence is at an all-time high, and unemployment is at record lows.

Accordingly, the need for precious metal bullion is less acute than it was five years ago.

Precious metals have also been trading in a fairly tight band in 2017. Gold fluctuated between $1,138 and $1,348 an ounce, silver between $15.50 and $18.50. Regardless of the state of the world, precious metals were trading relatively flat. Money can still be made but required a lot more work trading on the daily volatility, which is contrary to the practice of holding precious metals for the long term.

But the big news is the skyrocketing value of Bitcoin. Starting the year at $1,100, a single bitcoin climbed as high as $20,000 before correcting to $14,000 at the end of 2017. That is a stunning 1,800% return at its peak. Understandably, investors and speculators are abandoning precious metal bullion in favor of bitcoin in hopes of once-in-a-lifetime returns. Source

We love low mintage coins and the gamble that goes with it. We are not financial advisors, so we are not offering financial advice, we just like talking about what we are doing and trying to encourage others to review what is available. We love to gamble and some of our “bets” have already paid off handsomely. We anticipate seeing others pay off in the future, but, you never know if the premium is going to come or not. If the premiums never show up we still have the bullion and that’s good enough for us!

Premiums on Coins, Bars, and Rounds May Finally Have Bottomed

-- Published: Tuesday, 9 January 2018

By Clint Siegner

Gold and silver premiums have been following the demand for physical metal lower in recent months. As investor selling ticked up, popular bullion products poured back into dealer inventories. The result has been some of the lowest premiums we’ve seen in a decade for items like gold and silver American Eagles.

The “premium” is the amount over the market price for gold or silver commanded by a specific bullion product. It will include the dealer’s profit, but also incorporates the wholesale premiums and/or fabrication costs the dealer must pay to acquire the inventory.

Ample supplies of American Eagles
on the secondary market led to a collapse
in U.S. Mint sales in 2017.

Premiums are the best indicator of demand in the bullion markets.

Secondary market products – items that are being resold rather than sold for the first time as brand new – are just about always the best option for investors, provided they can be purchased at a discount. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been very often in recent years.

For most of the past decade, bullion investors have been less inclined to sell. Instead, mints and refiners had trouble keeping up with demand at times.

Buying resale may mean the lot of coins a buyer orders will be dated with one or more prior years. A batch of silver rounds could include more than one design. But as long as the product is in uncirculated condition and the designs are well-recognized and marketable, the resale value will be the same as for a new version of the same item purchased today and sold a year or two down the road.

The cost of manufacturing puts a floor on the pricing mints and refiners can offer. This is not the case in the secondary market, where manufacturing costs have already been borne by someone else. Buyers who aren’t insistent about getting brand new product can now get coins, rounds, and bars at a discount.

Metal prices bottomed in mid December, which discouraged some selling. Now prices are moving higher. Initially, this may drive another round of selling, leading to extra supplies of secondary market products. However, optimism about where metals prices are headed also appears to be on the rise.

Buyers might as well save money on premiums, while they can. There are some signals that the opportunity may not last too much longer.

Supplies of some secondary market items, such as silver American Eagles, can vanish at a moment’s notice. Buying demand has turned higher and these discounted items are always the first to go. If that trend continues over the next few weeks, look for premiums to rise from today’s extraordinarily low levels.

Marsyas - Liberty Gold Piece 1/4 OZ. Fine .9999
Junius Maltby

Published on Jan 18, 2018
Mint Population: 400 Coins
https://qualitysilverbullion.com/prod...
In 2013 (MMXIII) a YouTube channel was started called the Junius Maltby Channel. Here, a community of individuals would come together to discuss precious metals, coins, sound money, humble living, being debt free, the news of the day, the economy, history and share a love for Freedom – Liberty – Libertas! The Junius Maltby Coin originated as a way to celebrate reaching 10,000 subscribers, where the 1 oz. fine silver round could also serve as a challenge coin, reminding those who hold it of the discussions and principles we hold as a community. Now this coin is available as a 1/4 OZ. .9999 Fine Gold 20 mm bullion strike!

On the Obverse you see the face of Marsyas – who in Greek mythology was tied to a pole and flayed alive by the god Apollo after challenging the god to a musical contest. Marsyas was admired for his intelligence (sunesis) and self-control (sophrosune), not qualities found by Greeks in ordinary satyrs. Among the Romans, Marsyas was cast as the inventor of augury and a proponent of free speech (the philosophical concept παρρησία, “parrhesia“) and “speaking truth to power.” The earliest known representation of Marsyas at Rome stood for at least 300 years in the Roman Forum near or in the comitium, the space for political activity. The statue was regarded as an indicium libertatis, a symbol of liberty, and was associated with demonstrations of the plebs, or common people. It often served as a sort of kiosk upon which invective verse was posted. The obverse also states the weight and purity of the coin (“1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD .9999”) in place of where the name Junius Maltby existed on the Silver round. This was done at the request of Junius.

The Reverse displays the ancient cuneiform inscription for the Sumerian word “Amagi”. Ama-gi is a Sumerian word written ama-gi4 or ama-ar-gi4. It has been translated as “freedom”, as well as “manumission“, “exemption from debts or obligations”, and “the restoration of persons and property to their original status” including the remission of debts. Other interpretations include a “reversion to a previous state”[and release from debt, slavery, taxation or punishment. The word originates from the noun ama “mother” (sometimes with the enclitic dative case marker ar), and the present participle gi4 “return, restore, put back”, thus literally meaning “returning to mother”. Assyriologist Samuel Noah Kramer has identified it as the first known written reference to the concept of freedom. Referring to its literal meaning “return to the mother”, he wrote in 1963 that “we still do not know why this figure of speech came to be used for “freedom.”

The earliest known usage of the word was in the reforms of Urukagina.[7] By the Third Dynasty of Ur, it was used as a legal term for the manumission of individuals, (the act of a slave owner freeing his or her slaves).

It is related to the Akkadian word anduraāru(m), meaning “freedom”, “exemption” and “release from (debt) slavery”.

Also on the reverse are the latin words for Gold and Silver as well as Liberty (Aurum et Argentum) (Liberatas).
