In Washington state property rights battle, furry rodents win

Steve and Deborah McLain have tried without success over a year to get a permit to build a house on the 8 acres they own in the vicinity of the city of Tumwater. The problem began when the inspectors found a single mound of dirt entry of a pocket gopher, lived there.

“The gopher has been able to enjoy our property all the time,” said a frustrated Deborah McLain, “and they have more rights on our property than we do.”

The McLains have offered to give one of their acres of protected habitat for the gopher, but Thurston County still not issuing a building permit. The province requires land owners who want to build anything on their property to determine if their soils are conducive to gopher tunneling. If they are, inspectors should make of the website reviews of 30 days from each other. The reviews should be carried out between 1 June and 31 October because that is when gophers are most active.

Thurston County officials are working on a conservation plan that would create a $42,000 gopher tax for new homeowners who build on gopher habitat. That money would be used to purchase land in another part of the county where it would be managed as protected space for gophers.

We don't control them. I use a float every spring to try and level out the hay fields just so we don't bounce so much. There has been a lot of snake oil type people making a living with ideas but so far they ain't figured it. If I could come up with a way, I'd be super rich super fast. The Richardson ground squirrels we call gophers are even worse and poison can control them somewhat but the collateral damage can be high. They is sure fun to shoot though.

Open an eagle sanctuary on the property. Won't be a gopher in the district by year's end. There's a certain satisfaction to setting one batch of enviro-twats against another.

That's really not a bad idea Proffesur. We stick up telephone poles with nesting crap on top at the mines during reclaim. Some populate some don't.

Kill them first then build. Don't ask, don't tell.
Always better to Beg Forgiveness than Ask Permission.

Why Freedom and Liberty Loving people move to states controlled by PROGs is beyond me.

This right here. You would have to adjust the size of the weapon for the AO. I would have to judiciously use a pellet rifle here, but much rather be using a .264 (heh).
Some of you guys are just plain lucky.

People who live in PROG controlled territory are the same as people living in the desert during droughts:

MOVE !!!

You guys would love seeing how our gophers kinda/sorta change into a piece of 8" square hide that just floats back to earth upon being hit by the bigger guns. I know guys who go out and unload 2-300 rounds of 22-250, 222, 223 just to squeal at the sight. Magpies, crows and such are cool too as their head goes up, each wing flys sideways and the tail goes down. Don't anyone call it cruel as it ain't.

At 1000 yards, as far as the target is concerned, the round that just smacked him was completely silent. No quiet needed.

Naw, it's just my Benjamin Trail NP Nitro in .22 cal. My goto varmint rifle for around here. That 'muffler' is the cocking lever. Shoots sweet, knocks squirrels dead. If I remember right it's over 900 fps in .22

Man, that's a far cry from the pellet days that I grew up in. Nice !

I play with this, mine is 5.7 X 28. If you are not familiar with 5.7 X 28, it's basically a short version of a .223.
