Texas church shooting leaves many dead

At least 27 people have died after a gunman opened fire at a church in Texas during Sunday services, police say.

The attack happened at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs in Wilson County.

Police official Albert Gamez Jr confirmed the number of fatalities to CBS News.

The gunman, who is reported to have been killed in the aftermath, entered the church and opened fire at around 11:30 local time (17:30 GMT).

"The details are kind of sketchy but what I know right now, what they're telling me, like 27 deceased and over 20, 25 injured," Mr Gomez Jr said.

"They're talking about the shooter is dead also," he added.

One witness, Carrie Matula, told NBC News: "We heard semi-automatic gunfire… we're only about 50 yards away from this church."

"This is a very small community, so everyone was very curious as to what was going on."

The San Antonio FBI branch said its agents had been deployed, and there was no indication of the gunman's motive.

The FBI also said that while only one shooter was reported, it was looking into other possibilities.

Photos and video from the scene showed the area taped off by local law enforcement.

A number of helicopters have arrived to transport the wounded, KSAT 12 reporter Max Massey said.

Texas governor Greg Abbott said: "Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response."

He said more details would be released by the Texas Department of Public Safety shortly.

President Trump, on a tour of Asia, tweeted: "May God be with the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI and law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan."

I wonder how long this nut job was on the FBI radar but they did nothing. The repeat of a theme we’ve all heard before.

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas -- A gunman opened fire inside the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs Sunday, killing and injuring multiple people, authorities said.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that more than 20 people were killed in the shooting. The official, who was briefed on the investigation, was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.

The official said between 10 to 15 people were also injured but stressed the investigation was early and the figures could change.

The shooting suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, CBS News has learned from federal law enforcement sources.

Kelley is a former U.S. Air Force member who served from 2010 to 2014. He was dishonorably discharged and court martialed in May 2014, CBS News has learned.

Federal law enforcement sources say the suspect used an AR-15 type rifle, CBS News justice and homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports.

A law enforcement official confirmed that the gunman is deceased. He was shot after a car chase with police, but it's unclear if he shot himself or if he was shot by police, CBS News' senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports.

"We still don't know much about what happened, other than this guy came in around 11:15 a.m. and started shooting everybody in the church," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on CBSN.

Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told Wilson County News earlier that a man entered the church and opened fire. He said there were multiple casualties and fatalities. CBS affiliate KENS confirmed at the scene that there have been "multiple casualties and fatalities" including children.

The Connally Memorial Medical Center told CBS News it received multiple victims related to the shooting.

Video from KENS showed first responders at the scene, located about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio.

The daughter of the church's pastor was one of the victim's killed in the shooting, her mother Sherri Pomeroy told CBS News via text message.

"My husband and I were ironically out of town in two different states. We lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends," Pomeroy said Sunday.

She added, "Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the Charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as I can."

CBS NEWS
Dana Fletcher, a business owner in the area, told CBS News she saw a "ton" of sheriff's vehicles and ambulances racing down the road. She said she doesn't know what happened but said there was heavy police presence and people were being airlifted from the scene.

Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said they were responding to the shooting.

A law enforcement official said an FBI crisis response team is on scene to offer assistance to local police, CBS News' Milton reports.

The FBI will be offering evidence recovery, offering to check through databases to see whether this person has any connections to international terror to see if its a terrorist event or a domestic situation, Milton reports. She says officials are looking into it but they don't know the motivation at this point.

President Trump said on Twitter that he is monitoring the situation from Japan.

"May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan," Mr. Trump tweeted Sunday.

Devin Kelley: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

The horrific mass shooting wounded almost everyone inside the small white church building in the town of only a few hundred people. Authorities in Sutherland Springs, Texas have confirmed that there are multiple casualties – as many as 25 were killed – after frantic social media reports described a man, now named as Kelley, 26, walking into the church in combat gear and shooting parishioners.

“This will be a long suffering mourning for those in pain,” said Governor Greg Abbott, confirming that 26 people had died. As many as 30 other people were injured, reported an ABC producer. A KSAT-TV reporter at the scene said that an “ambu-bus” had responded, which is used to transport multiple victims. Pregnant women and young children were reportedly among the victims, including the 14-year-old daughter of the pastor, who was out of town when the mass shooting occurred.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. The Shooter, Who Showed Off a Photo of a Rifle on Facebook, Once Taught Bible School

The shooter was described as a “white male in his 20s from outside San Antonio” by Mike Levine, a journalist for ABC News, who reported that law enforcement had uncovered a weapon photo on Kelley’s Facebook page. “Authorities are now scrubbing his social media; on Facebook in recent days, he showed off an AR-15 style-looking gun.” A

After opening fire inside the church, reports say, the gunman took off in a vehicle. He died after a brief police pursuit, but it’s not clear whether that was at his own hand or whether he was shot by law enforcement.

Kelley’s Facebook page has now been deleted. His profile picture showed two small children, which was a chilling juxtaposition next to the semi-automatic rifle that was his cover photo. According to The Daily Beast, “Kelley was married and Kelley’s mother-in-law listed a P.O. box in Sutherland Springs as a mailing address. San Antonio police reportedly raided Kelley’s home on Sunday evening…he briefly taught at a summer Bible school.”

His LinkedIn page says that he was a VBS “teacher aid (sic)” for “VBS AT KINGSVILLE FBC” and notes, “Dates volunteered Jun 2013 – Jun 2013 Volunteer duration 1 mo. Cause Children. Teaching children ages 4-6 at vocational bible schools helping their minds grow and prosper.” However, multiple children are reportedly among those shot in the church.

Neighbors say they heard shooter may have reloaded multiple times, around 50 people usually at service

However, Kelley’s Facebook page also showed that he had liked pages devoted to atheism.

The shooter’s Facebook page.

Reporter Matt Massey wrote that “neighbors say they heard shooter may have reloaded multiple times, around 50 people usually at service.” He reported that at least six helicopters were called in to transport victims.

According to CNN, “The shooter was killed after a brief chase north into neighboring Guadalupe County, according Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Robert Murphy. It is unclear if the shooter was killed by police or took his own life.”

2. The Gunman, Who Is From Comal County, Once Wrote That He Lived By the Air Force’s ‘Core Values’

Devin P. Kelley

A LinkedIn page in the shooter’s name shows that Devin Kelley served in the U.S. Air Force “from his 2009 high-school graduation until 2013,” The Daily Beast reported. According to The New York Times, Kelley is from Comal County, which is not the county where the church is located. His motive and why he targeted the Wilson County church is not clear. Comal County is located northeast of San Antonio, Texas. The gunman is 26-years-old, The Times reported. The Daily Beast reported that Kelley was a “resident of New Braunfels, a suburb of San Antonio.”

Families in tears wait to see if their family and friends are safe. Praying for the safety of all those involved.

The LinkedIn page says, under the entry for U.S. Air Force, “Cargo, demand and supply , distribution.” He added, “Basic learning on my contracted job.” The page says he attended New Braunfels High School from 2003 to 2009, receiving his diploma. His LinkedIn page also says, “I am a hard working dedicated person. I live by the core values on which the Air Force go by.”

However, CBS News reported that the suspect is former “US Air Force E1 (2010-2014) He received a dishonorable discharge He was court martialed in May 2014.”

The scene outside the church was heartbreaking as crying family members of loved ones gathered outside, desperate for information about them, and praying. A local hospital has reported receiving multiple victims. The ATF was responding to the scene. Authorities had said very little in the hour immediately after the shooting because they were dealing with the mass casualty event.

“Sheriff Joe Tackitt confirmed that there were multiple casualties and multiple fatalities. The shooter has been taken down,” reported Wilson County News. Other reports said police shot the suspect, who has not yet been identified, although this was not confirmed. Videos and photos posted to social media, more of which you can see below, showed a massive law enforcement response to the scene.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the “evil act,” writing on Twitter, “Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response. More details from DPS soon.” CNN reported that a “witness, a cashier at a gas station across the street from the church, said she heard about 20 shots being fired in quick succession while a church service was underway around 11:30 a.m. local time.”

3. Witnesses Said the Shooter Was In ‘Full Gear’ & He Wrote That He Did Not Fear Death

At least 6 helicopters called to transport victims

Devin Kelley’s social media accounts contained other warnings. His Facebook page contained a quote from Mark Twain about not fearing death. “I do not fear death,” it read. “I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

Witness accounts agreed on this: The male suspect walked into the church and opened fire. “A man in full gear came into the church and unloaded several rounds, and then took off in a vehicle,” a KSAT-TV reporter said in a live report on Facebook Live. The FBI was at the scene after the tragedy unfolded. It was later reported that Kelley might have been wearing combat gear.

FBI just arrived on the scene. The scene is getting pushed back.

Although authorities had not provided specific details yet on the mass shooting reports because they were busy responding to the chaotic scene, people on Twitter and Facebook wrote within minutes that a man, possibly with an assault rifle, had shot multiple people. People posted frantic messages on social media about loved ones. Witnesses reported that the man walked into the church around 11:30 a.m. Sunday and opened fire, KSAT-TV reported, adding, “The church is located in the 500 block of 4th Street in the small, south Texas town about 40 miles east of San Antonio.” (Recent population figures said the town has only 362 people.)

Assault rifle reports, which are not yet confirmed, originated on social media. “Oh my God if you live in Sutherland Springs or Wilson County please go in side and stay safe. My family just called me freaking out because across the street from their house a guy with an assault rifle started shooting in our town church and even shot my brothers house. If ur from my hometown go inside, lock ur doors and so be safe and I love you all,” wrote one woman on Facebook.

4. Multiple Children Were Among the Victims, Including the Pastor’s Teenage Daughter

Horrifically, early reports say that a small toddler is among the victims. “A witness at the scene reported a 2-year-old was also shot,” reported KENS5. The child’s condition was not clear. There was no official word on the number of casualties.

Another man said that people he knew were inside the church. He wrote on Facebook, “Just got a call from (named removed) prayers needed for Sutherland Springs community. Someone went into the Baptist Church and shot 15 people. The guy is one the run and they have the roads closed down. (Names removed) were at their church in LaVernia. Please keep prayers going.”

This is the scene of the shooting st the church

Some accounts on social media said there might be more than one shooter. However, authorities believe only Kelley was the only shooter. Pastor Frank Pomeroy oversees the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. Pomeroy’s wife, Sherri, told NBC News that her husband was out of town during the shooting, but their daughter was inside. Frank Pomeroy later told ABC News that their daughter, Annabelle, 14, was one of those killed. Pomeroy described Annabelle as “one very beautiful special child” to ABC News.

5. People Wrote Frightened Messages on Social Media As News of the Shooting Broke

Area of the church is now blocked off and taped off. Family and friends still waiting to hear if their loved ones are safe.

The news of the shooting broke first on social media as citizens with instant access to a national audience reported that their loved ones were in peril or had witnessed aspects of the shooting or its aftermath.

“I’m hearing there was a shooting at the First Baptist Church on 539 near Hartfield Rd in the Sutherland Springs area. Lots of sheriff’s deputies on scene, blocking traffic. EMS from all over Wilson County have been called in. Multiple victims,” one social media user wrote. Another man wrote on Facebook, “A bunch of people have been shot in Sutherland springs . The church and gas station people walked in and started shooting so far herd 15 dead maybe more.”

TEXAS RANGERS: ARMED CITIZEN ‘ENGAGED’ KILLER, ENDING RAMPAGE
‘A local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect’
Nov 5, 2017

oday's mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, was only halted after an armed Texan "engaged" the killer and put an end to the rampage, the Texas Rangers reported.

Freeman Martin, a major in the Texas Rangers and a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, says the suspect dropped his rifle and fled after being confronted by a local man who had grabbed his rifle.

Freeman provided a timeline of the tragedy in a press briefing Sunday evening.

"At approximately 11:20 this morning a suspect was seen at a Valero gas station in Sutherland Springs, Texas," Martin said. "He was dressed in all black. That suspect crossed the street to the church, exited his vehicle and began firing at the church."

"That suspect then moved to the right side of the church and then continued to fire," he continued. "That suspect entered the church and continued to fire. As he exited the church, a local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect. The suspect dropped his rifle, which was a Ruger AR assault-type rifle and fled from the church."

"Our local citizen pursued the suspect at that time," Freeman went on. "A short time later as law enforcement responded that suspect right at the Wilson/Guadalupe County line crashed out and was found deceased in his vehicle. At this time we don’t know if it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot by the local resident. We know he’s deceased in the vehicle. "

The suspected killer is being reported as Devin Patrick Kelley. However, Freeman would reported, "The suspect has not been completely identified. We believe he’s a young white male, maybe in his early 20s. He was dressed in all black, tactical type gear and was wearing a ballistic vest."

A local resident and neighbor of the good samaritan, Kevin Jordan, witnessed his as-yet unnamed neighbor put an end to the rampage, and possibly kill the shooter. Jordan is also a trained medical assistant and tended to the victims. Watch him recount the experience here.

Resident shot at and chased Texas church shooter

Witnesses say the man who killed at least than 26 people inside a small Texas church only fled the scene after a local resident started shooting back at him.

The local resident, who a neighbor described as the "nicest man on the planet," had grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect as he exited First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, just 40 miles southeast of San Antonio.

According to state officials, during the confrontation the suspect dropped his assault-type rifle and fled from the church, with the local citizen in pursuit.

The suspect, identified as Devin Kelley of New Braunfels, crashed a short time later as law enforcement responded. Authorities found Kelley dead inside the vehicle, although it's not yet known whether he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was shot by the local resident.

Eyewitness Kevin Jordan lives less than 50 yards from the church and saw it all happen. He was outside changing his car's oil when the masked gunman started his deadly assault.

Jordan said his neighbor, who he described as a man who would do anything for anyone, came out with a gun then shot the suspect while taking cover behind a car.

"If it wasn't for him, the guy wouldn't have stopped," Jordan explained to KENS 5. He explained that his neighbor also shot through the suspect's window as he drove off.

During that confrontation, the gunman also shot at Jordan's house and he said the bullet went through his window and narrowly missed hitting his 2-year-old son and wife.

"When he saw me and I ran, he took a pop shot off at my house," Jordan described.

After the suspect left the area, Jordan, who is a medical assistant, went inside the church to try and help the victim's, many of which he has known for years.

But it quickly became clear that nothing could be done for many of them. "I can't even describe everything I saw."

Officials have yet to release the names of the 26 victims, but said they ranged from five to 72 years old.

Sherri Pomeroy, the wife of First Baptist Pastor Frank Pomeroy, told the Associated Press in a text message that their 14-year-old daughter was one of the victims.

Church shooter was ex-Air Force, dressed in tactical gear

Stefanek said Kelley was court-martialed in 2012 and discharged two years later. He was court-martialed on one count of assault on his spouse and another count of assault on their child. He received a bad conduct discharge, 12 months' confinement and a reduction in rank.

Texas Shooting Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church. Devin Patrick Kelly Kills 26 - My Thoughts
JD's Variety Channel

Published on Nov 6, 2017
My thoughts on the Texas shooting at Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church. Gunman Devin Patrick Kelly opened fire killing 26 and injuring many others. This video discussed violence culture that is woven into society, yet largely ignored.
