Currently, the www.beprepared.com website is running a clearance sale. (Emergency Essentials) Based on a previous conversation on this site regarding "quality of post SHTF life, I recommend checking out the freeze dried individual ingredient items and the dessert package. The bananas are particularly discounted. If you still lack a quick way to make a birthday cake when the occasion occurs you should check it out. I do have some of these items in my food preps. This is also a good source of hard to find freeze dried items (not cheap) such as salmon on a seasonal basis.

Avoid combination meals. They are high in sodium and starch and there is a better use of your long term pantry funds. Always consider your environment and what you may need to suppliment your nutrition.Do you need freeze dried beef when you have a ready supply of meat out your back door for the taking? Do you only grow salad veggies but need fruit because you are in agricultural zone 2? Don't forget about "quality of life". You will likely wish to preserve your staples for bread, dumplings, biscuits etc. but don't forget the treats for special occasions.

I have tried some of the items. "Just add purified water" items appeal to me. I will interject my opinion of quality, quantity and price where appropriate but DYOD.

If you have ample fishing opportunities where you live...this is a seasoning option that is HUGELY on sale. It is the "small can" but it can season a large amount of fish. I just purchased a can.

Many online LDS sites are having great overstock sales right now. I would like to point out an often overlooked source of calories and staple to your LTS (Long Term Storage) kitchen...ghee. Butter in cans is good for around five years. Ghee (clarified butter with the milk solids removed) has a longer shelf life and can be used in baking and is a staple in Thai and other Asian cuisines. I buy olive oil directly from Italy and keep it in a wine refrigerator at 59 degrees. It is always fresh. One case of twelve each year for $300 per case. I buy through a an invite only "convivium" and do not pay duty as it is shipped as "Samples". There is always a danger my olive oil will go bad if SHTF but I am working on a backup cold storage room in my "lake house" basement.

Note to anyone who stores a year or so of food as I do, make sure you are using your stores with a good rotation method. You will have what you know how to use and can replace as necessary unti the SHTF. Not only that, freeze dried food incorporated into your regular diet is really very good. It also teaches you how to cook with your storage. Learn to do spaghetti sauce, Chili, Hamburger Sasoup (a staple here), breakfast skillets (freeze dried eggs only have a shelf life of about 5 years) etc.
