Some might ask, “Why a 44 Special?”, and that is a good question. The 44 Special is accurate and reliable, but it is also a good defensive cartridge. The 44 throws a large bullet at moderate velocity, and on paper, doesn’t look all that impressive. It is much like a revolver version of the good old 45 ACP. However, on target, whether inanimate steel or living flesh and bone, the 44 Special gets the job done. It hits with authority, and penetrates well. If you are of the school of thought which believes in peppering the target with a handful of small, fast-stepping bullets, the 44 Special is not for you. However, if you tend towards hitting the target hard and making a large hole, the 44 just might be your baby. The 44 Special gets the job done with minimal recoil and muzzle blast. I carry a 44 in my pocket every day. The Ruger GP100 is a bit large for a pocket gun, but it fills that gap between pocket gun and heavy belt gun, and is what has for years been designated a “big-bore belly gun”. We shoot some Russian Azot slugs in this video. These are quite similar to the German Brenneke slugs. This is the first time these have ever been shot in the U.S. and I haven't found any other videos of them yet. If you aren't Russian, you probably have never heard of these slugs before. The quality of the slugs is actually very good and is on par with even the Italian Gualandi slugs, which are world-class. The quality is better than some of the Brennekes we have shot, which fell apart in our tests. Let's see how the Azots perform.

A quick demonstration on how loud a suppressed pistol would sound in your house should you need to use it in a home defense situation. A suppressed pistol is way more beneficial than a non-suppressed pistol. Gregg and I watched a video about carbon nanotube body armor. In the video, the company representative made some claims about Kevlar that made us both go, "hmmmmm". We took an old vest with over 10,000 hours/5 years of use and shot it multiple times to see how many 9mm bullets it would stop. Since millions of people currently rely on Kevlar to protect them, we wanted to do an informal test of our own just to settle the argument. Most agencies have not approved the use of "CN" type armor and have limited budgets, so Kevlar will be around for some time. It only does harm to make false-claims about a product.

Using an ordinary transfer pipette, we create a mini RPG using a small amount of black powder. It takes the correct amount of powder to make this work. Using too much just leads to problems and they won't launch correctly. Don't try at home, unless you want to.

In this video Eric uses Cerrosafe alloy available through Brownells to remove a chamber obstruction in a CZ 75. Cerrosafe is an alloy with a very low melting point under 200°F that can used for everything from casting a chamber of unknown dimensions to removing obstructions as this video covers. This exact method can be used to remove a larger obstruction such as a case head separation in a rifle with the same process. Stay tuned, much more on the way.

We test out 6 of Tim Hamilton's (yet to be named) copper shotgun slugs. We did our tests using lower-velocity loads, which help give us better camera imagery by reducing both the smoke and eliminating heat distortion.
Tim's slugs are similar to both the OATH Tango shotgun slugs and the RIP bullets. His design uses the air rifle pellet shape. We had a lot of failures but also learned a lot about these slugs in the process.

I'm sure most Americans have never heard of this 12g. 28gram (1oz) slug. The Balle Wonder. This is a strange design that looks like a cross between a washing machine and an apple slicer. The internal ports are not there for any aerodynamic reason, but to act like a multi-chambered, giant hollow point. The slug breaks into many pieces when it go through fleshy material- it basically blows up. This causes maximum internal injuries, but minimum over-penetration.

The CETME-L is a maligned Spanish military rifle that is a very close cousin to the HK33. The CETME firm decided to design and build their own roller delayed 5.56 rifle to replace the legacy CETME-C that was chambered in 308.

The CETME-L did not last long in Spanish service due to its many foibles and strange design choices. That said, we tested a Century Arms C308 G3/CETME variant in one of our mud tests and it performed above average.

How well will the CETME-L do?
