Trump claims illegal immigration is costing the U.S. $200 billion a year as he chases a deal with Democrats that funds his border wall and avoids a government shutdown

  • Trump needled the other side as the calendar moved one day closer to a fissure that would see parts of the government closed down on Friday
  • An expected 380,000 federal workers could be furloughed over the Christmas holiday as 420,000 or so work on the promise of payment
  • White House senior adviser Stephen Miller said the administration will shut down the government if President Trump doesn't get his border wall funded
  • 'We're going to do whatever is necessary to build the border wall to stop this ongoing crisis of illegal immigration,' Miller said Sunday on CBS
  • Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump needs to stop throwing a 'temper tantrum' and reiterated that his options do not include a wall
  • Without a compromise 25 percent of the federal government will shut down late Friday night just as the clock strikes midnight

White House says it wants to avoid government shutdown, will find other ways to fund border wall

Washington Post

The White House wants to avoid a partial government shutdown and has found other ways to get the border wall President Trump is demanding, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Tuesday.

Sanders’ comments come four days before large portions of the federal government will begin shutting down unless Congress and Trump reach a funding deal.

Trump has been demanding $5 billion from Congress for his border wall, which Democrats refuse to give.

But Sanders told Fox News Channel: “We have other ways that we can get to that $5 billion.”

“At the end of the day we don’t want to shut down the government, we want to shut down the border,” Sanders said.

Sanders said the White House was exploring other funding sources and believed it could be legally done.

“There are certainly a number of different funding sources that we’ve identified that we can use, that we can couple with money that would be given through congressional appropriations that would help us get to that $5 billion that the president needs in order to protect our border,” she said.

Sanders’s comments come after a series of miscalculations by Republicans in recent days over how to try and get Democrats to sign onto $5 billion to pay for the construction of a wall along the Mexico border.

Last week, Trump said he would be “proud” to shut down the government over the issue, a statement that congressional Republicans openly said muddied their messaging.

Then on Monday evening, Senate Republicans said they were anticipating a formal proposal from the White House, perhaps at 5 p.m., that never materialized. But the White House never promised a 5 p.m. proposal, and then Senate Republicans signaled they planned to move ahead on an overhaul of the criminal justice system this week, giving them very little time to negotiate a budget bill.

Meanwhile, the stock market has fallen precipitously in recent weeks, creating economic angst over Trump’s agenda. Trump has attacked the Federal Reserve, among others, for the stock market’s tumble, but it has rattled him, according to people who have spoken with him both inside and outside the White House.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose the internal White House sentiment.

“We’ll continue to have these conversations with both Senate and House Republicans and Democrats. Our team has been in constant communication,” Sanders said. “We’re going to continue to do that. I’m not going to negotiate here, but we’ve been talking to them just as recently as this morning.”

Here's where things stand now...……..

- Trump backs off demand for $5 billion for border wall, but shutdown still possible after Democrats reject new GOP offer

- White House climbs down from $5 billion wall request as it says Trump would accept $1.6 billion in scramble to make a deal with Democrats

And now schumer says not one cent for the wall, no 1.6 billion , they are fking trump in the ass daily and rinos are doing it too, he is toast

Schumer says he will stick with his two offers to avoid a shutdown; a stopgap bill across the board, or a stopgap to fund the Department of Homeland Security with appropriate packages for the rest of the agencies subject to closure.

Earlier Tuesday White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that the Senate has "thrown out a number of ideas," and that when something passes, the White House will evaluate it. On the topic of funding the wall, Sanders told Fox News "We have other ways that we can get to that $5 billion," adding "At the end of the day we don’t want to shut down the government, we want to shut down the border." She then said that the White House was looking into other funding sources and believed that it could be accomplished legally.

"There are certainly a number of different funding sources that we’ve identified that we can use, that we can couple with money that would be given through congressional appropriations that would help us get to that $5 billion that the president needs in order to protect our border," said Sanders.

((Schumer disagreed - saying "They need congressional approval - they're not getting it for the wall, plain and simple." ))

And a republican majority in the house and senate, what a fking disgrace.
It's because we now have a de-facto 3 party system. D's R's and T's.
....and half the R's are R's in name only.

That's like paying 212,000 of 'em $50,000 each to not come. Is that a good deal?

Judge strikes down Trump policy blocking domestic violence victims from asylum

Politico
By Ted Hesson

A federal judge on Wednesday struck down most of a Trump administration policy that turned away asylum seekers who claimed to suffer domestic violence or gang violence.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled that policies blocking the alleged victims from obtaining “credible fear” of return to their home country — the first step in an asylum claim — violates federal immigration law.

The decision bars the Trump administration from rapidly deporting such asylum seekers and represents another legal setback in President Donald Trump’s battle to discourage migrants from trekking to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sullivan wrote in a detailed 107-page opinion that new credible fear policies stemming from an immigration court opinion issued in June by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions ran afoul of congressional intent.

“And because it is the will of Congress — not the whims of the executive — that determines the standard for expedited removal, the court finds that those policies are unlawful,” Sullivan wrote.

Sullivan, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, also has presided over a case that involves former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn. The judge chided Flynn on Tuesday for lying to federal authorities and granted a delay in his sentencing.

BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court kills Trump's plan to deny asylum to every illegal who enters between official border crossings as Chief Justice Roberts sides with liberals

  • 5-4 ruling pitted four liberal judges against four conservatives, with Roberts breaking the tie
  • Brett Kavanaugh sided with the administration but the majority refused to allow the president to deny some asylum seekers the chance to apply
  • His executive order had limited asylum applications to only people who came in at official border crossings
  • A lower court judge's injunction will now stay in force while a lawsuit plays out
  • That judge drew Trump's ire last month; he called him an 'Obama judge'
  • Roberts rebuked the president publicly, insisting that there are no 'Republican' or 'Democratic' judges – only an independent judiciary

Why not make Mexico use half that $10 billion to start building the wall like the Transcontinental Railroad in the 19th century? Mexico starts on one end and we meet somewhere in the middle.
