Trump DOJ Sues California Over Immigration, Sanctuary State Laws (REACTION)
Anthony Brian Logan

Published on Mar 7, 2018
The Trump Justice Department filed a lawsuit Tuesday night against California, saying three recently-passed state laws were deliberately interfering with federal immigration policies.

It marked the latest legal and political confrontation with the nation's most populous state, which the federal government says has repeatedly stood in the way of its plans to step up enforcement actions in the workplace and against criminal aliens.

"The Department of Justice and the Trump Administration are going to fight these unjust, unfair, and unconstitutional policies," Attorney General Jeff Sessions was expected to tell California law enforcement officers on Wednesday. "We are fighting to make your jobs safer and to help you reduce crime in America."

The state's Democratic governor, Jerry Brown, fired back: “At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America. Jeff, these political stunts may be the norm in Washington, but they don’t work here. SAD!!!”

Federal officials are seeking an injunction to immediately block enforcement of the three California laws, each enacted within the past year.

One of those laws offers additional worker protections against federal immigration enforcement actions. Senior Justice Department officials have said it's prevented companies from voluntarily cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

Employers are mandated under the law to demand ICE agents present a warrant or subpoena before entering certain areas of the premises, or when accessing some employee records.

Some companies have complained they've felt torn between trying to comply with seemingly contradictory state and federal statutes, since penalties for non-compliance can be steep from both entities.

  • He said immigration raids last month were not undermined by Oakland mayor
  • Mayor Libby Schaaf warned people in the area at the time about the raids

Bankrupt Baltimore 'Somehow' Finds Money To Fund Lawyers For Illegal Immigrants

by Tyler Durden
Tue, 03/13/2018 - 19:10

Baltimore ranks high on the “shithole” list for its widespread death and destruction. The city’s population hit a 100-year low in 2017, as residents are fleeing neighborhoods to escape the violent crime. The federal government stepped in last year at the request of the mayor to get the city under control. Intelligent agencies are circling above with light aircraft using optics and other spy-tech to monitor residents, meanwhile, a network of cameras on the city streets use facial recognition software to track citizen.

Furthermore, Baltimore's homicide per capita is on par with Venezuela, a country that is suffering from an economic collapse in South America.

Combined with violent crime, the opioid crisis is adding fuel to the fire signaling that the most violent days are just ahead.

To say that the city is in a state of decline would be a major understatement. Everywhere you look there are abandoned buildings and homes, and as you drive through some of the worst areas you can actually see drug addicts just lying in the streets. Just like so many other communities all over this country, decades of liberal policies have taken a brutal toll, and now the city is just a rotting, decaying shell of the glorious metropolis that it once was.

There are some sections of Baltimore that you simply do not go into once the sun goes down. And actually it isn’t a very good idea to go into those areas during the day either.

Being a Baltimore resident these days doesn't seem to be that enticing a proposition. Unfortunately, crumbling water infrastructure has only added to the agony of residents that occupy what increasingly looks like a failed city. As The Baltimore Sun noted in December, a series of water bill hikes, an effort designed to raise money to repair the city's crumbling water infrastructure, has left the poorest residents facing bills equal to 20% of their monthly income.

In 8 percent of the city’s census tracts, the poorest fifth of households face water bills costing more than 20 percent of their income, Colton estimated.

In a quarter of the tracts, the poorest fifth face bills amounting to between 10 and 20 percent of their income.

“People just genuinely can't afford to pay ever-increasing water rates,” she said.

Not surprisingly, few Baltimore households have actually budgeted 20% of their annual income for water expenditures which has resulted in many simply skipping payments and others even losing their homes... events which have prompted local city council officials to consider sweeping reforms on how water is priced.

* * *

So having said all that, it may surprise residents of this city that their mayor - amid desperate budget problems - somehow found $200,000 to pay for lawyers to help illegal immigrants.

As HotAir.com's Jazz Shaw reports, in their recently completed 2018 budget negotiations, Baltimore wound up having to make cuts so deep they eliminated funding for things like new street lights and trash cans.

And all of that was happening at the same time as they struggled to fund law enforcement efforts aimed at tamping down their historic murder rate.

But somehow, in a bit of financial legerdemain, they came up with $200K to pay for attorneys for illegal aliens fighting deportation orders.

Baltimore’s spending panel is expected to approve $200,000 on Wednesday to pay for lawyers who will represent immigrants who are facing deportation.

The head of the mayor Catherine Pugh’s immigrant affairs office said the approval would allow the first lawyers to get work within weeks.

The money is scheduled to go before a vote of the Board of Estimates. Half of it is in the form of a grant from the Vera Institute of Justice, a New York nonprofit, and the other half is from the city’s coffers.

There’s a lesson here about priorities somewhere, but I get the feeling that the City Council wouldn’t listen even if someone stopped by to brief them on it.

As Shaw concludes, with all the problems Baltimore is trying to wrestle to the ground (and actually making some progress on lately, much to their credit), is this really where you want to be expending your energy and resources?

Too many illegal aliens wind up involved in gang violence and Charm City already has more than enough of that. They also tax the city’s resources in a place where the safety net is already strained to the point of rupture.

If you’re assigning these attorneys to fight deportation orders, that means that ICE has already looked into the matter and the individuals in question are here illegally. Why would you be fighting their removal? There’s no question that they don’t belong here. Shouldn’t your first loyalty be to the citizens of your city? Not to put to fine of a point on it, but... seriously.

Just ask Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf?!!

Trump Wrecks California Governor Jerry Brown After Border Wall Criticism (REACTION)
Anthony Brian Logan

Published on Mar 14, 2018
President Trump on Tuesday slammed California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) during his first visit to the state as president, saying Brown has done a terrible job running the state.

"I think Gov. Brown has done a very poor job running California," Trump told reporters.

"They have the highest taxes in the United States. The place is totally out of control. You have 'sanctuary cities,' where they have criminals living in the sanctuary cities. And then the mayor of Oakland goes out and notifies when [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] ICE is going in to pick them up," he said.

Trump is visiting the state to view prototypes for his proposed border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. He noted the wall's construction while speaking to reporters.

"And if you don't [have] safety, meaning if you don't have this kind of wall, the drugs are pouring through in California, can't do it," he said.

Trump says Democrats in Congress are 'using' DACA recipients as political pawns and insists Republicans tried to save them in $1.3 trillion budget deal

  • President vented at Democrats on Friday for holding up both his border wall and a permanent fix for the now-expired DACA program
  • He said Democrats are using DACA for political purposes while he wants to protect the recipients from deportation
  • Democrats had demanded a permanent fix in exchange for $25 billion to construct Trump's border wall
  • The White House offered a three-year extension, saying the wall was also a three-year project
  • Neither position prevailed, so DACA was left out of the omnibus budget entirely
  • This puts the issue back in the courts, which are holding up Trump's plan to wind DACA down and force Democrats to the bargaining table

The Military Can't Build Trump's Border Wall. Here's Why He Keeps Insisting It Can

Time
Philip Elliott

They couldn’t quite get him to understand it.

Just became Congress passed a spending bill doesn’t mean President Donald Trump could now treat the pile of taxpayers’ cash as a general fund to spend as he pleased on a huge and costly wall along the U.S.-Mexican border, aides explained to the President. Contrary to Trump’s experience as a real estate and marketing executive, this is not how the federal budget process works. The chatter on cable couldn’t trump Congress’ constitutional control over the budget.

But Trump wouldn’t hear it, according to two Administration officials. In Trump’s mind, Congress gave the money to the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis works for Trump, and Trump sees the wall as part of the United States’ defense. Ergo, he wants the Pentagon to build that wall. What was the point of being Commander-in-Chief — with a defense budget he boasts is “historic” — if Trump couldn’t make the military do his bidding?

White House aides told Trump that the budget he reluctantly endorsed wasn’t as flexible as budgets inside the Trump Organization. Congress explicitly forbade spending on a concrete barrier or in natural areas. Of the $1.6 billion allocated for border security — a far cry from the $25 billion Trump’s team sought as a starting point — most of it is for repairing existing fencing and conducting surveillance. When officials tried to explain to the President that the spending bill had no provisions for a military wall, Trump, in frustration, again blamed the filibuster for standing in his way, wrongly assuming fellow Republicans would go along with his desire to scrap it.

None of this got through, apparently, before Trump decamped last weekend for Florida. Trump sent a tweet on Saturday that read: “Build WALL through M!” (White House aides say the “M” in question was for Military, not Mexico.) “Military is rich again,” he tweeted.

The White House has tried to tamp down wall expectations — and head-off a rift with the Pentagon, which was already unhappy with the news Trump was bringing in a hardline national security advisor. “I can’t get into the specifics at this point,” press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Tuesday. “When we have an announcement on that, I’ll let you know.”

But when former Trump aide Jason Miller was on CNN a day later to make the case for having the Pentagon fund the wall, White House aides all knew what was coming back. “Don’t you think our border security is our national security?” Miller said.

The voices from cable news often overcome the policy insiders. With increasing frustration, the officials readied another presentation on why the federal budget wasn’t a piggybank for his whims. But after the briefing, Trump tweeted photos of fencing going up.

Trump has been stewing in recent days. The confluence of events — women speaking out about inappropriate ways they say Trump behaved, legal questions about payments made to these women and conservative backlash to his budget — left the President in a funk. Trump has told friends he feels let down by aides who didn’t do more on the wall, a major promise of his campaign.

Inside the White House, those aides aggressively dismiss the criticism and defend their work. They note that Democrats offered $25 billion for wall funding in exchange for a fix on young people who came to the country illegally, including a pathway to citizenship—which the White House rejected. These White House aides also note there was little appetite for the wall among Republican leadership, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who last week largely ignored Trump’s pleas for a military-funded wall during a meeting. This, too, Trump didn’t appear grasp. (The Washington Post first reported details of Trump’s meeting with Ryan.)

During his campaign Trump promised at every rally that he would build a wall and Mexico would foot the bill. Mexico has made plain that they won’t be picking up the tab, and the Republican-led Congress is no more willing to forego home-district projects to pay for a wall.

With members of Congress gone for a spring break, many officials expect Trump to tire of the military-funding idea by the time the Senate returns on April 9. “Has he ever stuck with anything in a sustained way that long?” one Republican official asked. “We’ll have 20 other headlines between now and then.”

Trump says he's done negotiating the fate of 'Dreamers' - warning that caravans of migrants are heading to the U.S. ready to take advantage of lax immigration laws

  • In a series of immigration-related tweets, President Trump warned of the 'caravans' of migrants in Mexico heading toward the U.S. border
  • 'Getting more dangerous,' he warned, adding he was no longer interested in working with Democrats on getting a DACA deal
  • Instead he suggested that Senate Republicans kill the 60-vote filibuster rule, and pass stricter immigration laws
  • Trump suggested the migrants would try to use DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, to stay in the United States
  • DACA's fate is still held up in court, as lawmakers were never able to come up with a deal to give the so-called 'Dreamers' status
  • Trump also slammed Mexico for allowing the migrant caravan to pass through undeterred, suggesting that fact should come up in NAFTA re-negotiations

Did anyone ever think that Mexico wouldn't end up doing this? Breaking them up into small groups is what will aid them in getting across our border. If they all showed up en mass, it'd be easy to round them all up together as they arrived. Now they'll be scattered across a wide section of the border making it more likely that at least some will succeed.
Ie: "disbanding" them is just Mexico's f'ed up way of helping them.

Trump says the number of border crossings is 'UNACCEPTABLE' and praises Mexico for breaking up the caravan before it reached the border and caused a 'giant scene'

  • President Trump said in a shock announcement on Tuesday that he's sending troops down to the southern border until his wall is finished
  • National Guard deployment said to be a response to increased advertising from smugglers, historic trends and an explosion in crossings in March
  • But it was a report about a caravan of Honduran migrants traveling through Mexico that appears to have set the president off
  • Caravan was broken up by Mexican authorities as Trump demanded, however he has used the situation to renew his border security demands
  • Just 200 or so individuals from the original group of 1,200 remains in transit
  • Unclear how many guardsman will be deployed and what they will do
  • Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also sent the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border in 2012 and 2006, respectively
