“Emit And His Ole Mule”
Emit the farmer had a naggin’ wife. She made his life miserable. The only real peace he got was when he was out in the field a plowin’.
One day while in the field, Emit’s wife brought’em his dinner, Then while he quietly eat, she berated him with a constant stream of naggin’ and complainin’. Suddenly, Emit’s old mule kicked up his back legs, struck her in the head killin’ her plum dead.
At the funeral, the Preacher noticed that when the womenfolk offered their sympathy, Emit would nod his head up and down. But when the menfolk come up and spoke quietly to him, he would shake his head from side to side.
After the mourners left, the Preacher approached Emit and ask’em, “Why did you nod your head up and down to all the womenfolk and shook it from side to side to all the menfolk ?”
Well, Emit replied, “The womenfolk all said how nice she looked, and her dress was purdy, so I agreed by noddin’ my head up’en down. And all the men asked, “Is that mule fer sale?”
