MTU MT-883 V-12

MTU, a division of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, is a commercial diesel engine supplier that builds military-specific engines to power an array of vehicles all over the world. Among the largest of these powerplants is the MT-883 Ka-501, a 90-degree V-12 that makes 1,630 hp and 3,687 lb-ft torque. It’s built to power such battlefield heavyweights as tanks that weigh in at more than 60 tons. There are actually two main configurations of the MT-883 engine, the Ka-500 and the aforementioned Ka-501. The Ka-500 produces 1,500 hp with 3,352 lb-ft of torque. Both have the same basic configuration (90-degree, V-12, dry sump, liquid-cooled), but their fuel-injection systems are different. The Ka-500 has an option of either common-rail or mechanical pump-line injection, while the higher-output Ka-501 uses a more advanced common-rail direct injection. Both engines’ air induction comes from two single-stage turbochargers that use air-to-coolant intercoolers. The engines’ crankshaft spins in a counterclockwise rotation.

Research

MTU builds the MT-883 to meet MIL standards such as “nuclear hardening” and “electromagnetic shielding.” The engine is also designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -47 degrees F (-46 degrees C) to 125.6 degrees F (52 degrees C). This range is actually a NATO requirement. If air temperature is below -4 degrees F (-20 degrees C), a built-in oil preheater helps keep the engine operational. MTU can also make the necessary adjustments to an engine to have it perform at high altitudes if the need arises.

The MT-883 engine has a very large displacement of 2.27L (139ci) per cylinder, giving the V-12 a total displacement of 27.4L (1,674ci). The engine has a dry weight of only 3,968 pounds. However, despite this comparatively small physical size, it has one of the best power-to-weight ratios in its class.

MTU can supply the MT-883 Ka-501 in a Euro Power Pack, which mates the engine with a transmission, cooling system, air filtration, energy system, preheating equipment, power management, and vehicle-specific features that are all optimized to allow the engine to run at its peak. These Power Packs come ready to be added onto a vehicle. MTU uses Power Packs to help simplify the installation and serviceability of its engines.

MTU is always working to advance the company’s diesel engine technology to meet clients’ needs. An example of these inroads is the MT-883 Ka-524. The Ka-524 is a variation of the Ka-501, which is designed for use in amphibious vehicles on land and in the water.

This was achieved by using a different engine-management system and a purpose-built turbocharger setup. The ECU changes the engine output to accommodate the two different drive systems found in an amphibious vehicle: one setting for water propulsion and another for Drive Mode on land. These upgrades help the MT-883 Ka-524 produce 2,740 hp with a maximum engine speed of 3,300 rpm. That is a significant increase in power over the Ka-501’s 1,630 hp.

© Provided by TruckTrend 002 MT883 Ka 501 Front Side
The Ka-501 can be ordered with the MTU Euro Power Pack. The option pairs the engine with a transmission and includes a cooling system, air filtration, preheater, electrical system, and power management all in one package.

The MT-883 is a compact, light, efficient, state-of-the-art, purpose-built diesel engine. But MTU is always working to improve its engines with new engine management and common-rail injection systems that help to maximize fuel use and oil consumption. With MTU’s continued improvements, engines like the MT-883 are at the forefront of diesel technology.

How does MTU produce a crankcase
mtuengines

Published on Mar 26, 2013
The crankcase is one of the most important elements in an engine. Although it weighs several tons, this gigantic component requires precision machining at every stage. Find out more about the manufacturing process in MTU Report 1/2013: http://www.mtu-online.com/mtu/mtu/mtu...

MilitaryVehicleWeb

Published on Jan 27, 2014
Ford GPW Engine 1945 August build
This engine has never been installed in a jeep. It is a new old stock engine that was pulled off the production line and placed in a crate to be used as a replacement engine in the field. It retains all the original "F" marked parts and is complete and ready to run. The pad on the RH top side of the block was never stamped. It is complete and original with Firestone F-40 Sparkplugs, SC stamp on the fan, "FORD" on the clutch plate surface. The original thermostat is "F" marked. It retains all its original "F" marked bolts and parts.

We found it at the Military vehicle auction in Dundee Michigan. And is now ready to be installed in a GPW jeep or used as a display engine.

DEUTZ V12 DIESEL MODEL A12L614 YEAR 1954
hotdieseloil's channel

Uploaded on Jan 27, 2012
Here is a running example of the very first V12 model DEUTZ made, dating back to 1954. They only made this A12L614 model for 6 years. It is 16 litres in capacity and air cooled. The design dates back to before WW2 but their construction could not commence until Germany was rebuilt.
The Deutz V12 are very rare and this is one of the oldest running examples in Australia.
I am running modified airfilters and exhausts.

MAN F6V35 World War 1 U-boat diesel engine load run
Onderzoeker67

Published on Feb 27, 2013
A World War 1 U-boat diesel engine, built in 1917, running under load for the first time in years, after being moved to the new location of the SHVP.

This U-boat engine was built in 1917 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg to operate in a German submarine. This engine however never made it into a U-boat as the war was running to an end. The engine was stored and transferred to Holland during the second World War to operate as a generator engine in a water supply company where it was producing electric power up to the 1960's.

It's a four stroke engine with six cylinders and a overhead camshaft, the exhaust valves are water cooled. Attached to the engine is a four step, high pressure air compressor which provides about 80 bar necessary for the diesel injection, as common fuel pumps where not developed yet.

To start the engine a pressure of 80 bar is needed for the fuel injection system and a large volume of air at 20 bar to set the six cylinders in motion. Once started the engine's own compressor takes over the high pressure fuel injection.

The engine drives an AC generator of 480 kVA built by Smit Slikkerveer in The Netherlands.

More information about this and other engines can be found on the website of the SHVP: www.shvp.nl

Marine Diesel Engine (K98MC)
Largest Dams

Published on Jan 30, 2014
Most modern ships use a reciprocating diesel engine as their prime mover, due to their operating simplicity, robustness and fuel economy compared to most other prime mover mechanisms. The rotating crankshaft can be directly coupled to the propeller with slow speed engines, via a reduction gearbox for medium and high speed engines, or via an alternator and electric motor in diesel-electric vessels. The rotation of the crankshaft is connected to the camshaft or a hydraulic pump on an intelligent diesel.

The reciprocating marine diesel engine first came into use in 1903 when the diesel electric rivertanker Vandal was put into service by Branobel. Diesel engines soon offered greater efficiency than the steam turbine.

The Engine That Powers the World - Diesel Engine Documentary
Paul Hicks

Published on Oct 29, 2015
The surprising story of the hidden powerhouse behind the globalized world - the diesel engine, a 19th-century invention that has become indispensable to the 21st century. It's a turtle versus hare tale in which the diesel engine races the petrol engine in a competition to replace ageing steam technology - a race eventually won hands down by diesel.

Splendidly, car enthusiast presenter Mark Evans gets excitedly hands on with some of the many applications of Mr Diesel's - yes, there was one - original creation, from vintage submarines and tractors to locomotive trains and container ships. You'll never feel the same about that humble old diesel family car again.

Please look at my other recording with a test run of a PC4 engine.
It's called like this "test run of Pielstick PC4 2013" It is recorded with much better sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYpUxG...

A little noise at the beginning of a start air compressor. PC4 engines also have a catalyst to reduce emissions of sulfur in the air. The diesel engines are running now as a backup in the winter when electricity prices are high. The engines have been delivered and fitted by Lindholmen AB 1979th. I think Pielsticks PC3 has a much stronger startup than the newer PC4 as you can see and hear this.

Paxman V12YHA 60 litre Ship Diesel Engine from HMS RHYL

Paxman V12YHA Diesel Engine at Hanbury / Stoke Prior Steam Rally Sept 2012

from HMS RHYL

Rated at 450bhp but read somewhere that the pressure charged engines went up to 1000bhp. An oil change will empty a 205 litre barrel of engine oil and at full power it will happily chew its way through 23.5 gallons of fuel every hour. Just to put that into context, most car fuel tanks are around 11-12 gallons.

Diese Version ist ein 27 Liter, bei 2800 U/min 800 PS starker Rover Meteor Panzermotor vom (Centurion, Conqueror) ohne Aufladung. Leider sind Undichtigkeiten am Zylinderkopf (Wasseraustritt) auf beiden Seiten. Also beide Köpfe runter. Zum Schluss dann noch Farbgebung und kosmetische Korrekturen. Ansonsten alles gut.

Tiger Tank " Hand Crank Engine Start Up "
Wonkabar007

Published on Mar 31, 2012
The hand crank starter, is the recommended way of starting a Tiger in cold weather conditions, it also has an electric starter. The hand crank turns a heavy flywheel at the rear of the engine, when it reaches a high rotation speed, a pin is pushed or pulled, this connects the spinning flywheel to the crank shaft, which spins up the Pistons thus starting the engine.

Setting the engine up and breaking it in. Remember this engine is just being started after a rebuild so that's why it's smoking from the assembly lube and the rack will be set-up to stop the hunting etc. Then the oil is changed and the engine painted. These engine's go into Euclid mining rock trucks, and they were in many other equipment/vehicles. The engine has rebuild heads, turbos, blower, water pump, all internal parts and the air compressor All done in the great north of Canada.

Its 230 volt, 3 Ph., 66kw. The engine is the same as a Cat D8 tractor at that time. This one is rated 120 hp @ 921rpm. Its got original Cat, Navy Board Of Ordnance and Torpedo Station I.D. tags. It shows 8600 hours and I don't think its ever been overhauled. It's has about 15 parts that were chrome plated by its Navel caretakers back in the day. I hauled it out to power wash it and paint "Navy Gray and make Under Way." thanks 4 looking.
