1st RECORDING OF: Go Away Little Girl - Bobby Vee (1962)
MusicProf78

Published on Oct 13, 2018
One of the most successful of the Carole King-Gerry Goffin song hits had languished on the shelf at Liberty Records for many months after this March 1962 waxing by Bobby Vee. The track was finally issued nearly a year later on his LP “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes,” but not before the Steve Lawrence version https://youtu.be/4ZqBWlNESWU had topped the charts in January 1963.

The original track was issued on Liberty LP 3285 - Go Away Little Girl (Goffin-King) by Bobby Vee, conducted by Ernie Freeman, recorded March 28, 1962

1st RECORDING OF: Delilah - P.J. Proby (1967)
MusicProf78

Published on Oct 13, 2018
Though this was recorded for inclusion on Proby’s 1968 “Believe It Or Not!” LP, the singer purportedly disliked it and rejected it. The track remained unissued until a 2008 CD appearance. Co-writer and conductor Les Reed used a similar arrangement when he conducted the hit Tom Jones version in a session only weeks after the Proby date: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elLsS...

The track was first issued on the CD “The Best Of P.J. Proby The EMI Years 1961-1972” (2008) - Delilah (Barry Mason-Les Reed) by P.J. Proby, conducted by Les Reed, recorded November 1967

1st RECORDING OF: For Once In My Life - Barbara McNair (1965)
MusicProf78

Published on Oct 13, 2018
While not all sources agree on the exact timeline, it appears that this post is the earliest-recorded version of the pop standard which has actually been issued, though there were others on the market before Motown finally got around to releasing the track in late 1966 on Barbara’s LP “Here I Am.” Composed and usually recorded as a ballad, “For Once In My Life” achieved its greatest recording success with Stevie Wonder’s bright-tempo’d 1968 hit: https://youtu.be/cmyrsT0o2TY

The original track was issued on Motown LP 644, also released on 45rpm in 1968 (Motown 1123) - For Once In My Life (Ron Miller-Orlando Murden) by Barbara McNair, produced by Frank Wilson, recorded October 25, 1965

1st RECORDING OF: Speedy Gonzales - David Dante (1961)
MusicProf78

Published on Oct 13, 2018
Fifteen months after this original was waxed, Pat Boone recorded the song for what would become his final national top-10 hit. Boone’s version featured the vocal assistance of Mel Blanc, who was also the voice of Warner Brothers’ animated cartoon mouse “Speedy Gonzales” between 1953 and 1986 (listen here: https://youtu.be/zZYmb6917IQ )

“David Dante” and “David Hill’ (see “I’m All Shook Up”) were pseudonyms for singer/actor/songwriter David Hess. In addition to “Speedy Gonzales,” he also co-wrote the hits “Start Movin’” (Sal Mineo) and “I Got Stung” (Elvis).

The original 45rpm single was issued on RCA Victor 8056 - Speedy Gonzales (Buddy Kaye-David Hill-Ethel Lee) by David Dante, conducted by Richard Wolfe, recorded February 15, 1961

1st RECORDING OF: He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother - Kelly Gordon (1969)
MusicProf78

Published on Oct 13, 2018
Brace yourself, as you just might find this to be a wee tad more “emotional” than the Hollies hit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biUcv... of a year later ;-) And if the name Kelly Gordon doesn’t ring a bell, he was a singer, songwriter, and record producer who co-wrote the Sinatra hit “That’s Life” and produced Bobbie Gentry’s chart-topping “Ode To Billie Joe.”

The original 45rpm single was issued on Capitol 2442 - He Ain’t Heavy…He’s My Brother (Bob Russell-Bobby Scott) by Kelly Gordon, arranged by Tommy Oliver, recorded January 18, 1969

For hundreds of other ‘originals,’ please visit the MusicProf78 channel’s fascinating playlist “FIRST RECORDING OF THE SONG…” (click here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... )

MusicProf78

Published on Oct 22, 2018
Two years before Terry Stafford would make the song famous (https://youtu.be/LNEy7X6B5PU ), Elvis included this track on his 1962 LP “Pot Luck.” It was eventually issued on 45rpm in 1964 on the flip side of “Kiss Me Quick” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOy2g...

1964 Pop Chart Peaks: Billboard 103, Cash Box 127

Initially appeared as a track on RCA Victor LP 2523 and later on 45rpm single 447-0639 - Suspicion (Doc Pomus-Mort Shuman) by Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires, recorded March 19, 1962

The Interrupters.

Lately I have been digging this band. It was interesting finding out that the lead lady is Aimee Allen (Aimee Interrupter). You may remember her Ron Paul song. Saw her live at the rally for the republic in 2008.

Deja Vu. I graduated HS in 1975, we sometimes used to skip school in the afternoons and go out to a friends parents house to play poker, drink beer and smokus puffus.

Alot of these songs I haven't heard since those long kicked-back afternoons, me sitting at this white hand painted wood table way out of town at a farmhouse thinking, "adult life is gonna suck, I better drink up now".

Climb back in my '66 Chevelle, high as fk, knowing life in this country for the ave working joe was notta gonna get much better than this. I was right and don't regret a moment of it.

1st RECORDING OF: This Diamond Ring - Sammy Ambrose (1964)
MusicProf78

Published on Nov 4, 2018
Before Gary Lewis made this his #1 debut hit of early 1965 https://youtu.be/TUPi8l7OvKs , the song’s initial version recorded for commercial release was this posted one by Sammy Ambrose (Billboard chart peak #65).

For purposes of this “1st Recording Of…” project, I don’t generally include demo versions which were never intended for commercial release, but Jimmy Radcliffe’s then-unissued demo of “This Diamond Ring” has become available online, and you might find it interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY3nB...

The original 45rpm single was issued on Musicor 1061 - This Diamond Ring (Al Kooper-Bob Brass-Irwin Levine) by Sammy Ambrose, arranged by George Butcher
