NEW LAWS FOR 2018: OREGON RESIDENTS ARE UP IN ARMS AT HAVING TO PUMP THEIR OWN GAS
BY LEAH THOMAS ON 1/3/18

A new law took effect at the start of the New Year in Oregon, making it legal for citizens to pump their own gas at stations—and Oregonians are not happy.

The law, which was passed through Oregon's legislature in May and signed into law in June, allows self-pumping in almost half of the state's 36 counties. This measure makes New Jersey the only state that still outlaws pumping one’s own gas.

When a CBS affiliate in Medford, Oregon, asked its Facebook followers to comment on the new legislation, the responses sparked reactions on social media. The post on Facebook has been shared over 55,000 times and has elicited over 40,000 comments that range from serious to sarcastic, but nevertheless, are equally entertaining.

“I don't even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian.....I say NO THANKS! I don't want to smell like gasoline!” one woman said.

“Not a good idea, there are lots of reason to have an attendant helping, one is they need a job too. Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly. Besides I don't want to go to work smelling of gas when I get it on my hands or clothes. I agree Very bad idea,” another Facebooker wrote.

“FEAR NOT OREGON!!!! I've decided to move to Oregon to open a school to teach people how to pump their own gas," one man joked.

Not all Oregon gas stations will be changing their ways, according to the Bend Bulletin.

“Honestly, I don’t think we’re going to make a change,” a cashier told the paper. “Our regular, longtime customers love coming here and talking to us while we pump their gas.”

When a CBS affiliate in Medford, Oregon, asked its Facebook followers to comment on the new legislation, the responses became a viral sensation. GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA

She went on to say that many regulars probably don’t know how to work a gas pump.

A gas station manager in Prineville, Oregon, said his station will continue to employ attendants. Another gas station owner in Metolius, Oregon, added, “My equipment is not set up for credit cards, so we don’t have any way of recording the gallons.”

While the law will require everyday citizens to pump their own gas, the Americans With Disabilities Act ensures gas stations provide assistance for the elderly and disabled.

In New Jersey, a violation of the self-pumping law will elicit a fine between $50 and $250 for first offense, and up to $500 for subsequent offenses.

Shee-it, I haven't been to or even seen a Full Service Gas station since my teen years (early '70s).

SNOWFLAKE Syndrome 2. Can not figure out how to work a gas pump or too good to get a little dirt on their hands ( They have gloves for that you SNOWFLAKE Idiots).
I bet the ones that do figure how to operate a gas pump stand there holding the lever, can't figure out what that little tab and serrated plate is for. :truck2:

Where I grew up there was yellow TOP VALUE stamps. Once in awhile you'd see S&H greenies.

Never met the first person who got something with those stamps. :ponder:

No more S&H Green Stamps. The whiners should buy electric cars.
In 69 I had to add $0.01 per gallon to the retail price in order to afford to give out the S&H stamps.

That pic above brought back some fond and cold miserable memory's. Same era, with the hollow hose w/bolt, hooked up to a 8" gong inside.

I should introduce to my x-wife. She would see something in the catalog and then go into the office and steal enough books of stamps to get it.

I remember attendants, but that went away before I ever got my first car. I did have one girlfriend who didn't know how to pump gas. She was dumb as a rock but did know how to do one thing and that was all that mattered to me back then.

Don't know how to pump gas?? WTF did they do when they traveled to other states, then? Waitin for that damn attendant to get around to your car to put gas in it was always a pain in the ass whenever I had to gas up in ory-gone. I, for one, am glad that stupidity is over.

People have to pump their own gas? Not a major event. Wait until they are told to sharpen their own lawn mower blades. Then the fun begins!

You're supposed to sharpen the,?
Yeah, Here is the latest technique: First get a nice hand file, Fire up the ol' lawnmower - the higher the RPMs the better, tip the mower up, with the file reach under....[SARC].

Heh, you talkin about forgetting to disconnect the spark plug before you start pulling the blade around when it's upside down? The part where it starts up like a WWI airplane engine?

Just go to the car wash and watch people that do not know what to do with the spray wand. Can't imagine the same people with a gas nozzle. Hopefully, they do not set themselves on fire!

While there is no law that says you have to pump your own gas here in Florida, there is a local station that offers full service ONLY! His price is .03 more per gallon and has 4 islands and usually a waiting line to get to the pumps. The attendants will even wash your windshield and check your oil if you ask. The owner is making a killing with his full service station. I have spoken to the attendants and they tell me people even tip them well for the service.

As a youngster, I pumped gas at a service station owned by a young Cuban family down on Marco. We washed the windows, checked the oil and air in the tires. The only people that would tip were the Cubans and they tipped well. I tip when my gas gets pumped. Not often am I in a place that does.

I tip when the nice waitress prepares a cafe Cubano or cafe con leche. The best are in Miami, of course, but sometimes you get a good one in Naples too.

My first two jobs I worked as a gas jockey, but back then there were no tips because everyone expected full service.

Apparently the original Oregon law mandating full service gas was a means of creating jobs, so the economy must be booming now...

I too pumped gas when I was a kid. That's where I learned to sell a quart of oil whether you needed it or not. There was always an empty quart in the rack.

I know I have mentioned it here elsewhere, that I leased my first Shell service station back in 1965. Got a decent deal on the rent (rent was based on gal per month) because the station had been closed for 6 months. My gross on gas per gallon was 0.035 per gallon after rent which barley was enough to leave me with $150.00 a week after expenses. So selling oil, filters, tires, windshield wipers, etc. was necessary in order to advance.
I offered commission on sales to the gas jockeys giving them a reason to get under the hood and check the customers fan belts, radiator and heater hoses. Plus in those days the oil filler cap was also the crankcase breather, real easy to sell another one as they would get gooped up real quick, and for the price of $1.00 no one ever said no. Wiper blades were easy to sell, as were most of the items mentioned above. People just didn't look after their cars much and there were not built like today.
Point I'm trying to stress is you can be a success if you just find and perfect a good business plan upon some service or product that is being ignored by the big Corps. and be willing to work hard and be flexible.

About short sticking someone and selling them a empty quart of oil I had those who tried that and were promptky fired without any sec9nd chance.
