What Happened to Cyrix Processors? | Nostalgia Nerd
Nostalgia Nerd

Published on Sep 22, 2017
Intel vs AMD? Forget it. The processor wars of the 90s are almost as legendary as Sega vs. Nintendo or Amiga vs. Atari. While Intel was improving the 386 and 486, competitors popped up like AMD and Cyrix, leaving Intel with a lot more competition on their hands than today, and various lawsuits followed along the way. These companies were dedicated to overtaking Intel in the processor race, and when Intel jumped to the Pentium, Cyrix and AMD weren't far behind with 5x86 and 6x86 processor iterations (AMD with their K6). This video will explore the whole Cyrix story, from their setup to their unfortunate demise. Along the way I'll ask the important question; Did Quake kill off Cyrix? Was it the undoing of an entire processor designer?.... It's a question which has basis in the Cyrix 686 processor's poor FPU performance and John Carmack's coding which leaned heavily on Intel FPU design. But it might not be the only reason why this silicon chip designer bit the bullet. This is an era where it wasn't just Intel vs AMD, or a simple price vs performance war. This was an era of Intel vs AMD vs Cyrix vs IDT, and for me, having lived through it, it's absolutely fascinating.

Sit back and witness glorious CPUs like the Cyrix 5x86, the 6x86, the MediaGX and the MII series. Along with early math co-processors that helped to make early x86 machines fly father than an IBM blue lightning chip set.

Windows 95 - A First Look (Silicon Mountain, 1996)
VWestlife

Published on Oct 22, 2017
I tried my best to sharpen and clean up the video, but there's only so much you can do with a low-quality VHS recording at EP/SLP speed that was entirely made by pointing a video camera at a CRT monitor, so a lot of the on-screen text is illegible. Also some of the titles are so far into the overscan area that they are invisible when watching it on a TV.

Original description on the back of the tape: "Produced by Silicon's team of experts, Windows 95 - A First Look video is absolutely the best method to learn everything you need to know about the new software. Windows 95 is Microsoft's answer to Apple easy-to-use systems! Forget about confusing DOS command language... you don't need it anymore. Windows 95 is easier to use than earlier versions, more powerful, and supports futuristic software and hardware. Multi-Media Ready just like televisions that are Cable-Ready. In the near future, your PC will be able to control televisions, stereos, alarm systems, and even your telephone! Windows 95 is ready for the future."

Oddware: 1994 Lxycon Sound Booster sound card
VWestlife

Published on Feb 18, 2018
Lxycon sold CD-ROM drives and the Sound Booster sound card was probably bundled together with one of them in a "multimedia upgrade kit". It is very similar to the "Mozart-16" card, using the Oak Technology OTI601 and Analog Devices AD1846 chips, as well as a genuine Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 FM synthesis chip. But unfortunately that's not enough to make it a good sound card...

The databits channel is pleased to provide you with the best in new tech, vintage and oddity gadgets, media formats, repair projects, electronic experiments and restorations of thrift store finds. There are also many "how to" and instructional titles. The goal is to search through garage sales, antique malls and resale shops for gadgets you didn't know existed, electronic toys you had as a kid, stereo or turntables your parents used or a film projector your school used to teach you valuable lessons. Typically we produce one video a week with several trips to a thrift store per month. Sometimes, through research, an item is searched for on ebay and purchased for review. A list of some of the most popular items watched here on the channel are: record cutting on various materials, DLP television repairs, VCR's, Camcorders, turntables, record players, records, car reviews and dictation equipment.

Whatever happened to Handheld TVs?
Techmoan

Published on Jun 29, 2017
A video answering the question - "Why don't they make handheld Digital TVs?" The wrong answer would be to say that "smartphones killed handheld TVs"...it's more complicated than that. Smartphones might be one reason people don't use handheld TVs *nowadays* but pocket TVs were killed off *years before* 3G networks suitable for streaming video had been built out in the UK.
The truth is that Apathy killed the dream of Pocket Digital TVs.
In this video I'll attempt to explain what happened as far as the UK goes and then demonstrate the kind of results you can expect to get if you use one of the limited range of no-brand handheld TV that can be found in the depths of eBay. In the absence of any offerings from Sony or Casio...this is as good as it gets.

Here's a link to the Digital TV shown in the video: http://ebay.to/2tjejU2

Retro PC: Amstrad Integra Compaq Clone | Nostalgia Nerd
Nostalgia Nerd

Published on Mar 30, 2018
Welcome to the Retro PC; this time from the mid 90s. The Amstrad Integra is an IBM PC Compatible from 1996. Modelled on machines such as the Compaq Presario 425, and their later models, it's an all in one affair, sporting a 15" SVGA monitor, a quad speed CD-ROM drive and a 3.5" floppy drive. Under the hood lurks a potent Pentium 100Mhz, along with a Soundblaster (clone), TV card and even a modem. This is Amstrad at their finest, copying something others have done, but making it cheaper and more feature packed.

In this video, I'll give you a bit of the Amstrad back story, have a look around the Integra and then fire it up for some work and some PLAY... in the form of 90s video games naturally.... because... Retro Gaming.

Early handheld computing - unboxing a brand new Sony Clie PDA from 2001
Modern Classic

Published on Apr 13, 2018
Palm helped popularize the PDA with its Palm OS-based devices, but Sony took the form factor and added new features that made their devices easier and more fun to use. I owned a Clie PEG-S320 back in 2001, and while I no longer have that unit, I decided to buy another one brand new in the box and see if I could get it working again. Spoiler alert: any time you're dealing with "new old stock" that's been sitting on the shelf for 16+ years, there are going to be problems to overcome! But in the end, it's a success.
