The Numbers Game by Martin Canon. This is the story of how a bored and lonely guy working the night shift used a telephone to tap into the strange world of phone phreaks, and quite possibly, may have also entered into the realm of spies, spooks, and other truly weird happenings.

Original story from the first issue of The Anomalist: http://www.anomalist.com/print/TA1.PDF

Calling the old Unsolved Mysteries hotline at 1-800-876-5353

If you call the old Unsolved Mysteries hotline at 1-800-876-5353, you will hear an error message, followed by some weird growling noises. Someone is having too much fun with that old number, perhaps?

Strange Telephone Calls From An Unknown Source
Curt Rowlett

Published on Nov 8, 2017
I make no claims about the authenticity of this story.

Important note: This recording is not of a single call, but rather, it is a series of calls recorded together on a single sound file. (You hear four different people responding to the mystery caller, at different times).

Backstory (summarized from Reddit thread and Sue Swiatek speech): According to the person who recorded these calls, he was originally from New York, was in the military at the time, but was stationed in Texas. Without telling anyone, he decided to fly from Texas to his home in New York, as a way to surprise his parents and friends.

While he was at the airport in Texas, the military guy says he was approached by a guy with a clipboard who proceeded to ask him his name, how to spell it, where he was going, and other personal information. The military guy just assumed that the stranger was trying to sell him something, so he mostly ignored him, and then went to go board his plane.

Shortly after military guy had boarded, a different guy - also with a clipboard - then sat right next to military guy and proceeded to also question him about the same kind of personal information. Military guy asked this new clipboard guy to leave him alone. Eventually a stewardess approached this other clipboard guy, asked to see his ticket and told him, "This isn't your seat, you need to move.” Clipboard guy moved away, but shortly afterward, he seated himself behind military guy, where he again continued the same line of questioning. Once again, he was told to move by the stewardess.

Military guy was rattled by these two contacts, so much so that he later called his landlord and asked her to keep an eye on his apartment while he was away.

When military guy arrived in New York, he went to his parents house. He then called a friend whom he was hoping to surprise with the news that he was in town. However, the friend then said to him, "What are you talking about? You told me you were coming to New York yesterday.” After discussing this with his friend, it soon become obvious to military guy that someone had called his friend, pretending to be him, and had told him about his trip from Texas to New York. His friend swore that he wasn't joking around, so military guy assumed that it was all just some weird coincidence.

After this, while military guy was staying at his parents house, he started getting calls on their home phone from an unlisted number, calls where a robotic-sounding voice would ask to speak to him by name. The voice asked the same strange questions each time, such as, "Is Gary Sudbrink there?," "How long are you back from Texas?" "You are being impersonated by the other voice,” and other weird statements such as “They are planning to make contact,” “Beware,” ““Government interference,” Visitations to be disrupted by them,” and “The sun will rise from the dark side of the Moon.”

As the calls persisted, military guy began recording the calls, and even his father, mother and uncle talked to the caller, but they could never get any information. Each time, the voice just repeated the same lines, sometimes with long pauses between when the voice said something and the caller responded.

On its face, this would appear to be just some sort of prank recording or computer bot designed to repeat messages in response to a human voice. However, this supposedly happened some time in the late 80s or early 90s, long before this kind of technology was as prevalent as it is today. I have also listened to another version of this recording that has been sped up. On that recording, the deep “robotic voice” sounds more natural and you can even hear some kind of local accent in the voice. In the Reddit thread that I summarized this story from, another person claims that the "Gary" who is being called is Gary Sudbrink, a Fortean researcher of the strange and paranormal, a fact that also would suggest that this might have been a prank aimed at him. (At FortFest2016, Mr. Sudbrink discussed this story in a talk titled, "Who's Calling? Recorded Phone Calls From a Mystery Entity").

But, if the stories about the two "clipboard guys" at the airport and and the friend who claimed to have received a prior call are legitimate, then that adds another whole different perspective to this.

Original sound file excerpted from a recorded talk given by Sue Swiatek of a UFO group, however I personally don't believe that there is any kind of UFO or "Men In Black" connection to this. But again, if the backstory is true, something strange was indeed happening.

Phone Phreaking: Recorded Msgs, Test Numbers & Oddities (Part 1)

In the spirit of the original phone phreakers, I have searched for and found quite a few interesting telephone numbers that lead to such things as standard telephone company recorded messages, test numbers used by phone technicians, and few others that defy explanation at the moment. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them in the comments section below. Thanks.
