Now that's why you use the same ruler for the whole job.
We could hire that famous thieving crooked lawyer that shook down Nike.

He could tell Stanley, Inc. how much money they would lose if this got out.

What's 3/16ths among friends anyway....
I worked with a guy who would always hand me his ruler to use if I was going to cut and thread a pipe he had measured for. And yes on something 10 foot long, 3/16" per inch would make a huge difference. My ruler and his were not much difference, maybe a 1/10th of an inch on 30ft, he was just OCD about getting exactly what he asked for. Worked with another plumber once that would rarely even use a ruler, just hold the pipe up, mark it and cut to fit, no OCD with that guy.

Is anyone aware that the tip of the tape moves to accommodate the difference between hooking on to measure as opposed to butting against the object?
Yes, but that's 1/4"

that was one of my major mental stumbling blocks when i went from a trade where 1/16 was the margin to engineering where guys designed to thousandths and contracting where dirt guys worked to 10ths of feet and concrete guys who worked to 1/4- 1/2" ...............sometimes i just had to walk away and relax as i was pre-programed to 1/16 for everything ....its intresting how those perceptions of tolerance are formed in early career and carry on for a lifetime

i did have one superitendant that when i went on his job to look things over would demand i use his 4' level instead of the one i carried in my truck

There is a tool (mathematical type) called Measurement System Analysis (MSA) that allows one to identify the amount of variation in any measurement system. The measurement system is everything that goes into the creation of a the data (the "measurements"). The MSA involves, for one example, taking a number of measurements of multiple parts using the same tool by a number of different people and calculating the statistics that show where the variation is coming from, the people, the parts the tools??? Since there is undeniably variation in every system, understanding how much variation is contributed specifically by the measurement system is important if decisions are to be made based on the results of data collection, i.e."measurement". If the amount of variation exceeds the tolerance (how wrong is too wrong?) - typically documented in a specification but maybe just an accepted rule of thumb, the measurement system must be addressed to reduce the amount of variation. Lots of tactical things can be done, training operators (those doing the measurement), calibrate the tools, automate the process (take out the human factor), use more capable tools (as proved by an MSA), etc. (Lt Dan's "use my ruler example...)
Long winded rant to say if the results are unacceptable, find out why in a disciplined and quantitative way, and fix it. Not that difficult to do and relegates anecdotal/subjective arguments to to the trash bin...

RANT OFF

I've got one theory on tape measures, and another one altogether for levels.
I carried two levels in my truck, one for important work like for home owners, another one for government work. Hi! Guess which one was the most accurate.

FUNNY AS HELL. NOT A JOKE. TEENAGE MINDS ARE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
TikTok Teens Try To Sabotage Trump Rally, End Up Donating $16,000 To GOP
Teens on TikTok tried to cause turnout to plummet for a Republican rally in Staten Island last week, after pulling off a similar stunt at the Trump rally in Tulsa in the summer.
This time, however, Republican officials were savvy enough to turn the attempted sabotage into tens of thousands in donations to the GOP from the pockets of the TikTokers themselves.
“On Sept. 19, out-of-staters using fake, frequently lewd names — including ‘Grabemby DePussay,’ ‘Ivana Punchyou’ and ‘F–kyou Trump’ — began signing up online for the ‘TRiUMPh Rally,’ a free get-out-the-vote event,” according to the New York Post.
“We had about 1,500 RSVPs from Staten Islanders,” explained Staten Island GOP chairman Brendan Lantry. “Then all of a sudden we started seeing the numbers tick up to 10,000, 15,000, 75,000. We knew something was not right.”
Lantry’s wife Jessica was able to track down a TikTok video with over half-a-million views from a 19-year-old Brooklynite known as Felisrae, who essentially urged followers to sign up for the event and not attend. (The video has since been made private.)
In an attempt to dissuade the Trump-hating TikTok frauds, the event holders added a nonrefundable $5 fee to reserve tickets.
“But they kept coming. From Colorado and California and Chicago and Houston, all over the country,” Lantry said. “They hate this president so much that they’re willing to donate to the Republican Party to troll him.”
The Trump-haters donated $15,785 via the reservation fee, the Post said, noting that “[no] seats were provided at the open-air rally, and the event drew 2,500 locals, who filmed a get-well message for Trump as he recuperated from his bout with COVID-19.”
