Massive Gate Installation

SNS 230: Student Welder, K&T Mill Repairs, Handbook Giveaway
Abom79

Published on Sep 8, 2018
Last weekend I helped to mentor my cousin Gabriel with his stick welding. He's going to a welding tech school and has inspirations of becoming a traveling pipe liner. I got some footage of that to share.
I also got back on the K&T mill, getting the motor pulled off. It's now at the motor shop and I'll have more on that next week. Lastly I pick a winner for the Machinery's Handbook giveaway.

Custom Internal Shaping Bar Part 5
Abom79

Published on Sep 15, 2018
I decided to machine another bar that was shorter and give me enough cut for a 6" work piece. I used the Victor lathe for all of that turning, and made use of my Edge chuck stops, and 6 jaw chuck. After the bar is complete we"ll make some test cuts on the shaper to simulate what the bar will be used for.

Swapping out a generator armature , they said it couldnt be done my bush fix puller did the trick, i rented one from auto zone which was free after i took it back, used my arms hooked to their arms to make it longer and viola, swapped the generator portion out. BTW tried to drill a hole higher up went to both lowes and depot, paid over 6bucks for their best 1/4 inch drill bit, neither would drill the metal, mind you this was made in 70 , when men were made of steel and boxcars were made of wood.

Power Hammer Repair
Essential Craftsman

Published on Sep 29, 2018
A few months ago we found a day to open up Cy's 400 lb Beaudry Power Hammer and tackled a problem that he had discovered sometime earlier. We were prepared for a MUCH bigger project but when we got her opened up it was really no big deal! Done in about three hours and back to work!

I treasure these days and am happy to share them with you...

Old machines (like this power hammer) are a joy to own and use but they certainly take some TLC. It really helps to have or know someone with a machine shop so you can make parts when needed. Cy is really good at repairing and maintaining his tools. Hopefully we can do a full video on his Monarch lathe one of these days.

Fixing Ugly Lawns With Brandon With Aeration And Overseeding
Brian's Lawn Maintenance

Published on Sep 30, 2018
Today Brandon and I partnered up to go do a bunch of aeration and overseed work that we both lined up for Saturday. It was cool getting to change it up from doing lawns and do some extra work to bring in some late fall revenue.

I know a lot of you guys are starting to offer aeration and even overseeding as an additional service for your clients in the fall, which is great. I've received a ton of emails and DM's on Instagram with photos of you guys renting aerators and spreaders, and making a lot of extra money doing these services.

Brandon and I were hustling today to get all of our work done so we didn't have to work Sunday. It was supposed to rain tomorrow, and then before you know it, back to mowing on Monday. This was a super profitable day for both of us, and it was great getting to help our customers have a healthier lawn going into fall and lining themselves up for success in the spring.

Have you guys been adding aeration and overseed to your service offerings? Are you guys just getting into aerations, or have you been performing them for a while? I know fall is a great time to offer that service, so if you haven't already, ask your customers if they want it and line a few up for yourself!

I got tired of my normal bed. I really wanted a water bed again. Well, every twit salesman in the country offers something called a water bed, but they are not all the same thing and it's hard to figure out exactly what you are being offered. Besides that, these new inventions cost a thousand bux or so, and what I wanted is only worth maybe fifty. (Frame extra.)

So I finally found ONE! COUNT 'EM! ONE! dealer who offered a simple water bed with plain wood frame for 500 bux. That seemed reasonable, but just for the sake of research I checked on air mattresses. I bought the Soundasleep queen size mattress for 120 bux because the reviews all said it is the best in the business.

Ok, the first thing you learn is that fitted sheets don't fit air mattresses. The second thing you learn is that the temperature of an air mattress is the temperature of the floor. Solution: put an electric blanket under the mattress. The third thing you learn is that no matter how you get out of bed, you need some support to stand up. You really wish it would be about six inches higher.

So I looked in the shed and hey presto! there was a box specifically made to support a double mattress. Some people call it a foundation, some call it a bunkie board. It replaces the old fashioned spring, since we now have inner-spring mattresses. And a double bed is just a few inches smaller than my queen bed.

So I bolted cleats to the bunkie board and tied the bedding in place. The fourth thing you learn about an air mattress is that is slides around, even when the sheets are tied on. Trying hard to invent something good, I used Gorilla Glue to attach strings to the mattress so I could tie it down. That worked, but now the mattress was eight months old and that leads into the fifth thing you learn: air mattresses don't last very long. Well, that's not a big deal. I slept in heaven for eight months at a cost of 15 bux a month. A 500 buck water bed would have to last almost three years to equal that monthly cost, and then you have the inevitable water leak. So I looked up the second best air mattress in the market, which is Beautyrest, sixty bux at Walmart. I bought two so I would have a spare.

Did I mention an air mattress is like sleeping in heaven? I tell you what, it's worth all this effort to get a good night's sleep.

Well, we are supposed to be talking about woodwork here. Right. So while I was getting a new mattress I decided to put sides on the bunky board so I don't need to glue tie-downs to the mattress. It happens that a standard 1x4 board all around extends it to the exact size of a queen mattress. At my age it took a week to attach the boards.

The pic here is version 1.0, before I attached the sides. It looks much nicer now.

How not to get ripped off by HVAC contractors. EPA 608 exam and Certification
Banshee Moon

Published on Sep 30, 2018
How not to get ripped off by HVAC contractors. EPA 608 exam and Certification.

Are you asking, "why is r410a so expensive?" Is there such a thing as refrigerant scam, HVAC R410a scam? Or are contractors just trying to make a living and charging fair prices? Well, the answer is a little f both.

I know full well that I will take a lot of heat for this from HVAC pros who think I am attacking them and that I simply do not understand things like supply and demand, the costs associated with being in the business including EPA hassles etc. But I do see both sides. None of those costs or hurdles justify unethical practices. Contractors need to strive to be very upfront with all costs to consumers and not surprise customers with vastly up-charged supplies or inflated prices after the fact. Contractors should be able to give you upfront quotes on all parts and labor. Even refrigerant. They may not know how much you need but they know exactly how much they charge per pound and they can tell you how much your unit holds by having the model number. From this you can get a rough idea. You can also shop around.

Some HVAC contractors are good, honest, hard working people. Others can be unscrupulous. This is a story of how a contractor who was asked ahead of time what pricing would be, neglected to quote the very thing that he marks up the most and is the larger part of the bill, refrigerant... R410a. Some contractors prey on the ignorance of the consumer. If your contractor throws some numbers at you for parts and labor and then says, "oh and some refrigerant". This might lead you to believe that the refrigerant is the least of the cost, because you assume it's just some little extra thing like you're buying a car and it's $35k and the salesman says "oh and since we gave you such a good deal on the used car, yeah we have to charge you for the tank of gas". You wouldn't expect to then be billed $750 bucks for a $50 tank of gas! But when a contractor says, "oh and some refrigerant, they usually assume you know nothing of the cost and some hope you don't ask until they hit you with the bill. ASK... shop around. Watch Dateline AC Repair Investigation with Chris Hansen here on Youtube to see the ways people get ripped off everyday when they choose the wrong company or contractor.

If you have multiple air conditioning units it would be smart to take the EPA 608 Certification exam in order to buy refrigerant on Ebay and simply pay a contractor to charge your system for you. The EPA 608 Certification exam coats about $25 and is a 25 question test with multiple choice answers provided of which you must answer 18 correctly. So it's not a stretch to say that it wouldn't be hard to pass the test by just guessing the correct answer. This is an exam and certification process that kids in high school vocational classes complete everyday and get certified.
