The author had just returned in 1934 from a 1 year world cruise as an officer candidate in a German warship and commented on the perspective coming from the experience "something that was denied to those at home where the media were now being employed more and more to manipulate and misrepresent."

Good book btw for those who appreciate biographies from the period, written by Helmut Mahlke, one of the very few German pilots to survive the entire war. The Germans didn't have do a tour and come back as an instructor. To survive 6 years, front line, mostly on the Russian front is astonishing. He did get shot down 3 times though.

I got the book in Kindle format for about $3, it's pretty pricey as hardcopy.
