Big Solar Shakedown with X-Class Flares & Storms on the Way: Solar Storm Forecast 09-07-2017
TamithaSkov

Published on Sep 7, 2017
The Sun has surprised many by firing 3 X-class flares and sending two solar storms towards Earth at a time when most are expecting the Sun to quiet down on its approach to solar minimum. Active region 2673 continues to be very complex and will be an X-flare player until it rotates out of view around the Sun's west limb in a few days. Along with the first of two solar storms hitting now, this spells trouble for emergency responders dealing with the victims of Hurricane Harvey and now Irma. Learn the details of these incoming storms, how emergency responders are being affected as they try to help the hurricane victims, and see what else the Sun has in store this week.

Reach Beyond Australia 15320 & 15340 kHz on the Icom IC-R75 and Yaesu FRG-8800
Oxford Shortwave Log

Published on Sep 7, 2017
Hi there, I was only thinking quite recently that I hadn't copied Reach Beyond Australia for some time now. Looking back at my uploads I found that the last time was actually May when I was in Crete and prior to that, March in the UK. So it was nice to copy them again in the middle of the afternoon with the IC-R75. This receiver was recommended to me by a certain Mr Thomas Brogan (who is doing ok for those of you that know him) and others.

As you probably know (and demonstrated on this video) the audio on the Icom is very shrill in comparison to the FRG-8800 for example, but that could be an advantage for hard-core DXing. What's not so good are the filters - extremely narrow and very wide. As my friend and radio colleague Phil Henzler quite rightly pointed out earlier, SSB is probably the most useful mode for DXing with the stock filters. Nevertheless, I got this radio at a very fair price - dare I even say a very good price and it's actually the first relatively modern table-top receiver I've ever owned. Very much looking forward to putting it through it's paces lol.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 03/09/17 at 14:32 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 (in the garden shed!). Thanks for watching.

Hurricane Irma Preparations – Testing the Alpha Loop Antenna Indoors on 40 Meters
Ham Radio (dot) World

Published on Sep 5, 2017
Hurricane Irma is currently packing sustained winds of 180 MPH and is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin. Here in Central Florida, we are preparing for Irma's possible arrival and one of our preparations is to see if we can use our AlphaLoop antenna inside the house on 40 and 20 meters. Last night, we had a scheduled contact with our friend Ria (N2RJ) on 40 meters and the antenna worked flawlessly! We were able to make contact with her using the antenna on the kitchen counter while running 30 watts.

Our friend Julio (AD4Z/HI3A) came on the frequency as HI3A in the Dominican Republic and Ria acted as a relay station to transfer Faith Hannah's greetings to him. In actual emergencies, relay stations are often used to pass information from one point to another because propagation conditions don't allow for direct point-to-point contact.

This little experiment shows that the Alpha Loop should work well indoors during the hurricane, should it make a visit to our QTH here in Central Florida. Hopefully, we won't need to use it, but if we do we will be prepared!

Horizontal loop experiment to reduce local QRM
MikesMovies

Published on Sep 10, 2017
Suffering from PLT/PLA Powerline networking I was intrigued when I saw a video on YouTube that showed a horizontal loop greatly reduced local QRM, while this was a large wire loop I wondered if my ALA1530 loop would work?

I have been using an original Roelof MiniWhip and its been fantastic, this is also designed for urban use so I was not sure what the outcome would be.

This video lets you see and hear what I discovered and I invite you to add your thoughts on what is happening in the comments.

Good DX, Mike.

CB Radio Plus AN Exellent Alternative PMR 446.
Steve Stevens

Published on Sep 10, 2017
CB Radio Plus AN Exellent Alternative.
As you will have seen in the video, there is an exellent alternative to CB Radio,.
It comes in the form of the little hand held radio i was using , covering the PMR 446 Band.
Now PMR 446 Needs to be understood a little to get the best range possible.
Unlike CB Radio it is effected more by obstructions, so range is drastically reduced.
Now just like CB Radio if u can get up high, on a hill for example, your range will increase.
A better video may be in order doing side by side testing, CB Radio vs PMR 446 hand held or something like.
All that said Just like CB Radio, its all about the Antenna system, more to follow on that topic soon.

Surviving Hurricane Irma, What You Need To Know To Survive Any Storm
HamRadioConcepts

Published on Sep 16, 2017
Hurricane Irma broke tons of records as it trucked across the Atlantic Ocean and hit Florida first in the Keys then the West coast at Marco Island. But there were a lot of people that stayed for the storm, and weren't properly prepared. I have seen some disgusting behavior while people panicked. In fact, most don't even know HOW to panic properly. The following video will hopefully give you some insight as to what is important when it comes to preparing for a storm. Don't be caught in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma without a way to survive. Know what you are doing.
