Poor Conditions for Emergency Responders: Solar Storm Forecast 01-06-2018
TamithaSkov

Published on Jan 6, 2018
The Sun continues its slow descent into solar minimum with very low activity and shrinking coronal holes. This means a very quiet week for Space Weather. Amateur radio operators and emergency responders will have to deal with very low solar flux due to the absence of active regions on the Earth-facing Sun. Luckily, aurora photographers can look forward to another chance for a solar storm at the beginning of next week. Catch up on aurora photos, learn how long the poor radio propagation conditions are expected to last, and see what else the Sun has in store!

Oxford Shortwave Log

Published on Jan 6, 2018
Hi there, my friend Matthias mentioned to me that WAXY is notoriously difficult for obtaining a positive ID, since they rarely announce their station call sign. So, whilst this should be considered presumed, the clear mention of ESPN radio effectively confirms their ID. This is a PF for me, so a very pleasing catch.

Recorded on 24/12/17 at 05:59 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.

Monitoring HF transoceanic aircraft radio at 11282 kHz (plus live flight tracking)
Curt Rowlett

Published on Jan 8, 2018
Monitoring HF transoceanic aircraft radio at 11282 kHz (plus live flight tracking). The ground control station heard is located in San Francisco, California. The tones that you hear being transmitted are known as SELCAL tones. SELCAL is "a radio system that alerts an aircraft's crew that a ground radio station wishes to communicate with the aircraft. SELCAL uses a ground-based encoder and radio transmitter to broadcast an audio signal that is picked up by a decoder and radio receiver on an aircraft. The use of SELCAL allows an aircraft crew to be notified of incoming communications even when the aircraft's radio has been muted. Thus, crewmembers need not devote their attention to continuous radio listening."

I've only just discovered this part of the radio hobby. It is exciting to listen to a plane flying over the vast ocean, high up in the clouds, coming from or bound to some exotic port of call.

Winter Ham Radio QRP Field Station @ 65° North

Published on Jan 11, 2018
in this video I take the all-weather solar power field station out for winter deployment at 65 degrees north. I'll take you through the entire process, hiking to location using a pulk sled, setting up the shelter and wood stove, setting up antennas, radio, and computer so that we can operate SSB and digital modes on 40, 30, 20, and 17 m.
I also discuss some of the difficulties of deploying a field station in Arctic weather. Also touch on why I use the tipi tent shelter, and the importance of the titanium wood stove for an Arctic Field Station.

Hi there, this is a PF for me and so a welcome catch. Whilst I've heard CROSS Corsen radio a few times, this station is a little further afield.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 22/12/17 ay 07:06 hrs UTC using an Elad FDM DUO and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna outdoors. Thanks for watching.
