FBI Probing Theft Of 18,000 Documents Linked To Sept 11 Attacks

The FBI is investigating the theft of 18,000 documents related to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center by a hacking collective known as The Dark Overlord, according to FT, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Posting under the name “The Dark Overlord”, the hacker or hackers claimed on New Year’s Eve that they had taken emails and non-disclosure agreements relating to the 9/11 attacks that were sent and received by groups including insurers Hiscox and Lloyd’s of London and the law firm Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin, now called Husch Blackwell.

The Dark Overlord said it would sell the documents for bitcoin, inviting Isis, al-Qaeda and nation states to bid for them online. -FT

"Pay the fuck up, or we're going to bury you with this. If you continue to fail us, we'll escalate these releases by releasing the keys, each time a Layer is opened, a new wave of liability will fall upon you," reads the hacking group's demand letter.

"If you're one of the dozens of solicitor firms who was involved in the litigation, a politician who was involved in the case, a law enforcement agency who was involved in the investigations, a property management firm, an investment bank, a client of a client, a reference of a reference, a global insurer, or whoever else, you're welcome to contact our e-mail below and make a request to formally have your documents and materials withdrawn from any eventual public release of the materials. However, you'll be paying us," the note continues.

Images of some of the documents began circulating on Wednesday after the group released decryption keys, which appear to show communications related to the World Trade Center.

The FBI is one of multiple law-enforcement agencies who are now investigating the breach, according to FT. The Dark Overlord, meanwhile, says that it has been under investigation for years, and that it had also gathered other information from Lloyd's and Silverstein Properties - founded by former WTC owner Larry Silverstein.

Hiscox insurance said it became aware of the hack last April.

"The law firm’s systems are not connected to Hiscox’s IT infrastructure and Hiscox’s own systems were unaffected by this incident," said a Hiscox spokesperson. "One of the cases the law firm handled for Hiscox and other insurers related to litigation arising from the events of 9/11, and we believe that information relating to this was stolen during that breach."

"We will continue to work with law enforcement in both the UK and US on this matter," added the spokesperson.

The September 11 attacks cost the insurance industry the equivalent of $45bn in 2017 terms, according to the Insurance Information Institute, and led to years of litigation over who should bear the cost.

Both Hiscox and Lloyd’s have expanded heavily into cyber insurance in recent years, selling protection against the costs of dealing with cyber attacks.

Husch Blackwell said it had not been hacked: “Several documents bearing the letterhead of a predecessor law firm to Husch Blackwell were made public earlier this week by a cyber terrorist group,” the company said in a statement.

“After a thorough review Husch Blackwell can confirm that no documents were obtained from Husch Blackwell and that there was no unauthorised access to Husch Blackwell systems, client files, documents or data.” -FT

A spokesperson for Lloyd's said it had no evidence of a breach of their systems, and said in a statement "Lloyd’s will continue to monitor the situation closely, including working with managing agents targeted by the hacker group."

Silverstein Properties says that the company is investigating the claims, and that "e are aware of claims of alleged security breaches at firms involved in the five-year insurance litigation following the attacks of 9/11," adding "To date, we have found no evidence to support a security breach at our company. We have spent the last 17 years fulfilling our obligation to deliver a magnificent and fully rebuilt World Trade Center. We will not be distracted by 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Chinese video surveillance network used by the Australian Government

They've been used to identify ethnic minorities and political dissidents in China, and were last month banned by the US due to concerns they were creating a "surveillance network" among federal agencies. Now it appears a pair of Chinese video surveillance companies have become entrenched in Australia's government as well.

One camera was used to monitor security threats at a sensitive Australian military base.

Another hangs outside the front entrance of the Canberra office complex that houses the Australian government's top lawyers, two federal departments focussed on national security and an Australian intelligence agency.

And then there are the hundreds of thousands of surveillance cameras in houses, on street corners, in local council offices, at schools and universities, on buses, in shopping centres and thousands of other public spaces across Australia.

Almost all of the cameras are made by two Chinese owned companies, Hikvision and Dahua. Both face long-standing accusations of spying on behalf of the Chinese Government.

"Having these sorts of cameras in secure facilities just doesn't make any sense," Fergus Hanson, head of the International Cyber Policy Centre at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said.

"It's a real dereliction of duty to have them in military bases.

"But even on the street you've got the potential to inadvertently contribute towards Chinese espionage activity by providing real time information about the situation on the ground, all over the world, and in collective terms, quite an important data feed to China."

Last month Hikvision and Dahua were banned from US government use via an amendment to a defence spending bill.

"Video surveillance and security equipment sold by Chinese companies exposes the US Government to significant vulnerabilities, and my amendment will ensure that China cannot create a video surveillance network within federal agencies," the architect of the amendment, Republican congresswoman Vicky Hartzler, said.

Hikvision and Dahua are, respectively, the largest and the second-largest video surveillance companies in the world.

Hikvision grew out of China's military surveillance wing and the Government retains a 42 per cent stake in the company.

It is making huge strides in the fields of facial and gait recognition software via advances in artificial intelligence.

The Guardian’s Reputation In Tatters After Forger Revealed To Have Co-Authored Assange Smear

Regular followers of WikiLeaks-related news are at this point familiar with the multiple serious infractions of journalistic ethics by Luke Harding and the Guardian, especially (though not exclusively) when it comes to Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. However, another individual at the heart of this matter is far less familiar to the public. That man is Fernando Villavicencio, a prominent Ecuadorian political activist and journalist, director of the USAID-funded NGO Fundamedios and editor of online publication FocusEcuador.

Most readers are also aware of the Guardian’s recent publication of claims that Julian Assange met with former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort on three occasions. This has now been definitively debunked by Fidel Narvaez, the former Consul at Ecuador’s London embassy between 2010 and 2018, who says Paul Manafort has never visited the embassy during the time he was in charge there. But this was hardly the first time the outlet published a dishonest smear authored by Luke Harding against Assange. The paper is also no stranger to publishing stories based on fabricated documents.

In May, Disobedient Media reported on the Guardian’s hatchet-job relating to ‘Operation Hotel,’ or rather, the normal security operations of the embassy under former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa. That hit-piece, co-authored by Harding and Dan Collyns, asserted among other things that (according to an anonymous source) Assange hacked the embassy’s security system. The allegation was promptly refuted by Correa as “absurd” in an interview with The Intercept, and also by WikiLeaks as an “anonymous libel” with which the Guardian had “gone too far this time. We’re suing.”

A shared element of The Guardian’s ‘Operation Hotel’ fabrications and the latest libel attempting to link Julian Assange to Paul Manafort is none other than Fernando Villavicencio of FocusEcuador. In 2014 Villavicencio was caught passing a forged document to the Guardian, which published it without verifying it. When the forgery was revealed, the Guardian hurriedly took the document down but then tried to cover up that it had been tampered with by Villavicencio when it re-posted it a few days later.

How is Villavicencio tied to The Guardian’s latest smear of Assange? Intimately, it turns out.

Google Wins U.S. Approval for Radar-Based Hand Motion Sensor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc's Google unit won approval from U.S. regulators to deploy a radar-based motion sensing device known as Project Soli.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said in an order late on Monday that it would grant Google a waiver to operate the Soli sensors at higher power levels than currently allowed. The FCC said the sensors can also be operated aboard aircraft.

The FCC said the decision "will serve the public interest by providing for innovative device control features using touchless hand gesture technology."

A Google spokeswoman did not immediately comment on Tuesday, citing the New Year's Day holiday.

The FCC said the Soli sensor captures motion in a three-dimensional space using a radar beam to enable touchless control of functions or features that can benefit users with mobility or speech impairments.

Google says the sensor can allow users to press an invisible button between the thumb and index fingers or a virtual dial that turns by rubbing a thumb against the index finger

PG&E Violates 5 year probation that started in 2017

https://fox40.com/2018/12/31/prosecutors-fires-may-mean-pge-violated-criminal-sentence/

"Also, as part of the PG&E probation case, the same federal judge asked California Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s office what charges the utility company could face if it’s found to have caused any deadly wildfires. Becerra’s office responded implied-malice murder and involuntary manslaughter are options on the table.

The attorney general’s office did not say it would charge the utility company with those crimes."

What next for the populist revolt?

People have rattled the elites – now they need to go further.

28th December 2018

In the West in 2018, we witnessed the intensification of a new conflict – that between anti-populist political elites and a growing grassroots movement that is hostile to these elites.

Many commentators have interpreted this conflict in classical economic language. This is fundamentally a struggle over the distribution of resources, they claim. Even an astute commentator like Fareed Zakaria, who recognises that the ‘yellow vest’ protests in France are underpinned by profound cultural tensions, especially between rural and urban France, is nevertheless drawn towards a narrowly economic explanation. ‘It’s part class, part culture, but there is a large element of economics to it as well’, he says.

Zakaria’s commentary – titled ‘The new dividing line in Western politics’ – is a good illustration of today’s widespread reluctance to face up to new cultural and political tensions, to recognise that people are moved to protest these days by concerns that do not fit into the 20th-century model of socio-economic class struggle.

The best way to view the current populist moment is as a delayed response to the top-down cultural revolution that occurred in the Seventies. In that decade, new attitudes towards marriage, family life, relations between the sexes, the role of the nation and the meaning of citizenship came to be codified in many Western societies. By the beginning of the Eighties, new forms of cultural authority had been established by the political elites.

This so-called cultural turn is often attributed to the influence of ‘Cultural Marxists’ burrowing away in universities. But this analysis overlooks something important – that the cultural turn took place right under the noses of Thatcher and Reagan. It was in their era that the new post-Sixties cultural values were institutionalised by Anglo-American cultural elites.

In retrospect, it seems clear that the anti-traditional cultural turn that occurred under the watch of the Thatcher / Reagan political order was an attempt by Western political elites to establish a new foundation to their authority. Most strikingly, the emergent cultural oligarchy perceived themselves as mediators and gatekeepers in a globalised world where public life is impacted on by issues and problems that supposedly transcend the nation state and national control.

They devoted much energy to de-nationalising public life, and delegitimising the attitudes and values held by citizens. This was the era when the dogma that there is no alternative to globalisation really took hold. The belittlement of sovereignty – both national sovereignty and popular sovereignty – was a central task of the new cultural establishment. In a very short period of time, many people found that their long-held belief in the values of community, nation and family was being dismissed as outdated, irrelevant and even prejudiced.

We witnessed the pathologisation of customary attitudes towards family, community and human relationships. And the end result has been the crystallisation of a powerful sense of cultural insecurity in European societies. Over the past two or three decades, significant sections of European societies have been dispossessed of the values they lived by and which made great sense to them. Many of them felt silenced and defensive about voicing their concerns. They felt unable to raise their reservations about multiculturalism, diversity, immigration and the sacralisation of identity politics. In comparison to the younger generations – who are often influenced by the cosmopolitan ethos that is dominant in their schools and universities – older citizens felt culturally insecure and sometimes helpless. Those who lived outside the culturally privileged, globalist urban neighbourhoods felt very strongly that their way of life was despised and scorned by the new cultural elites. They felt like strangers in their own homes.

Government shutdown exposes redundancy in Washington

Christopher Buskirk:

Maybe what we learned from the shutdown is that for all of the talk, all of the money, all of the skyrocketing debt, the federal government is mostly non-essential. Here are some concrete ideas for the president to win the politics of the shutdown and do some good for the country at the same time:

1. Propose the permanent shuttering of non-essential cabinet level departments. Closing the Department of Energy would save $32.5 billion, Department of Commerce, $61.8 billion, and the Department of Education, $59.9 billion. These are not new or radical ideas for Republicans. Reagan tried to close the Department of Education in 1981. And the current Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry, proposed closing his own Department when running for president. Are they really non-essential? In a word, yes. But let me put it in perspective with a few questions: The Department of Education was created in 1979. Does anyone believe that American education has improved since then? Does anyone think American commerce would cease if the department were closed?

2. Offer early retirement to non-essential federal employees who have been furloughed. This is common practice in the private sector. It would help make the federal government more efficient, thus reducing a drag on the economy, and would allow those people to pursue more productive employment while giving them the financial security to make the transition.

3. Encourage Congress to reassert its constitutional power as the primary lawmaking body of the federal government. Congress long ago ceded this authority to the deep state which is unelected, unaccountable, and makes far more law than Congress. For example, in 2016, Congress passed 214 bills which became law while the deep state made 3,853 'rules' with the force of law.

4. Return power to state and local government.

Neighbourhoods in Brussels out of control: Emergency services tricked and attacked

Firemen in Brussels had to flee from youths in the multicultural suburb of Molenbeek several times. The fire brigade’s union is “sick of it”, Belgian newspaper HLN reports.

During New Year’s Eve the fire brigade were attacked with stones and fireworks and a house burned to the ground as firemen had to wait for police protection.

“It’s the same situation at Zwarte Vijvers [Molenbeek] every year, Eric Labourdette of the labour union says. “They call us to report small fires and then attack us when we want to help,” he says.

According to Labourdette, the situation in the neighbourhood is out of control, is “youths were plundering shops and no control is possible”

Bolsonaro takes office in Brazil, says nation ‘liberated from socialism’

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil's newly inaugurated President Jair Bolsonaro said on Tuesday his election had freed the country from "socialism and political correctness," and he vowed to tackle corruption, crime and economic mismanagement in Latin America's largest nation.

Bolsonaro, a former army captain turned lawmaker who openly admires Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship, promised in his first remarks as president to adhere to democratic norms, after his tirades against the media and political opponents had stirred unease.

While investors hope Bolsonaro's free-market stance will reinvigorate Brazil's economy - the eight largest in the world - environmentalists and rights groups are worried he will roll back protections for the Amazon rain forest and loosen gun controls in a country that already has the world's highest number of murders.

"This is the beginning of Brazil's liberation from socialism, political correctness and a bloated state," Bolsonaro, 63, said in an address to the nation made after he donned the presidential sash.

Marine Le Pen calls President Macron “an imposter” and “a pyromaniac”

French President Emmanuel Macron called Yellow Vest leaders ‘hateful’ in his televised New Year’s speech.

Macron promised that his reform agenda would continue despite the ‘hateful’ Yellow Vests continued protests against him and his government.

Marine Le Pen, who has strongly overtaken Macron in voter polls, hitted back at ‘pyromaniac’ Macron on Twitter.

Le Pen was unimpressed by his un-appeasing attitude toward those protesting his reforms agenda, calling him an “imposter” and a “pyromaniac” on Twitter.

Her party, the French National Rally Party, on Facebook replied in depth. “At a moment when the nation is in need of conciliation, of a sublime and fraternal vision, of a president who is once again presidential, that is to say, an arbitrator, the French listened during this new year’s address to the speech of a clan chief, an ideologue of globalisation and an impudent professor of morality”.

With his popularity following the trajectory of a lead balloon, Macron’s choosing such an adjective as “hateful” was obviously met with criticism from the protesters. One protester spoke to Agence France-Presse (AFP) describing Macron’s speech as “rekindling the fire” of the protests

Presidential Proclamation on National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, 2019

Issued on: December 31, 2018

Excerpt (full text at link)

Human trafficking is a modern form of slavery. It is not enough merely to denounce this horrific assault on human dignity; we must actively work to prevent and end this barbaric exploitation of innocent victims. During National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we pledge to continue the battle to abolish modern slavery and restore the lives of those affected by human trafficking.

Human trafficking harms adults and children of all ages and demographics. Through force, fraud, and coercion, traffickers push their victims into demeaning forms of abuse, including domestic servitude and commercial sexual exploitation. These crimes often remain hidden because victims are reluctant to seek help for a variety of reasons, including language barriers, fear of traffickers and law enforcement, and lack of trust. Human trafficking destroys precious lives and threatens our Nation’s security, public health, and the rule of law. It is a scourge on the global community.

We are morally obligated to confront and defeat the abhorrent practice of human trafficking, and I am keeping my pledge to take aggressive action. In February of 2017, I signed an Executive Order to dismantle transnational criminal organizations that traffic and exploit people. I have made it a top priority to fully secure our Nation’s Southwest border, including through the continued construction of a physical wall, so that we can stop human trafficking and stem the flow of deadly drugs and criminals into our country. And my Administration is negotiating tough forced-labor provisions in our new trade agreements, including in the United States‑Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

. . .

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 2019 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, culminating in the annual observation of National Freedom Day on February 1, 2019. I call upon industry associations, law enforcement, private businesses, faith-based and other organizations of civil society, schools, families, and all Americans to recognize our vital roles in ending all forms of modern slavery and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities aimed at ending and preventing all forms of human trafficking.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-third.

DONALD J. TRUMP

Good stuff but Democrats, specially NY Democrats, will just brush this off and continue to idolize her.
I'll never forget the quote from Adam Savage of Myth Busters that sums up the liberal mind so eloquently: "I reject your reality and I substitute my own!"

‘They hate Italians and must resign’: Salvini attacks mayors resisting harsh immigration rules

The times when mayors of Palermo, Florence and Naples could cash in on illegal immigrants are over, Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said, vowing that those resisting the new policies will answer before law and history.

“Those who help the illegal immigrants, hate Italians,” Salvini said, blasting his opponents on Facebook and Twitter.

The minister from the conservative Lega Nord Party promised that the rebelling city heads will “answer before law and history.” And it's no idle threat, as the former mayor of the Calabrian town of Riace is currently under house arrest on charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

“Certain mayors look back fondly on the good old times of immigration, but for them the party is over!” Salvini said.

By “certain mayors” he meant the heads of Palermo, Florence and Naples, who he gave the choice of resigning from their posts.

The three mayors insisted that some parts of Salvini's security decree aimed at curbing illegal migration to the country were unconstitutional and that they would refuse to follow them.

According to the new decree, migrants can no longer apply for full residency after a two-year asylum stay – but Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando wants his city to continue this practice. Denying migrants access to health care and other essential municipal services would have an opposite effect and put them on the path of crime instead, he argued in the interview to the newspaper La Repubblica.

His resistance to the decree was “not an act of civil disobedience or conscientious objection, but the simple application of the constitutional rights that are guaranteed to all those, who live in our country,” Orlando said.

He also announced plans to take the anti-migrant rules to the Constitutional Court for the judges to rule on how they comply with Italy's principal law.

The mayor of Palermo was backed by his counterpart from Florence, Dario Nardella, who insisted that his city wouldn't cave in to the law that “expels asylum-seekers and, without repatriating them, throws them out onto the street.”

The FBI is Trying Amazon’s Facial-Recognition Software

The software allows the FBI to go through video surveillance footage much faster than agents can. The FBI is piloting Amazon’s facial matching software—Amazon Rekognition—as a means to sift through mountains of video surveillance footage the agency routinely collects during investigations. The pilot kicked off in early 2018 following a string of high-profile counterterrorism investigations that tested the limits of the FBI’s technological capabilities, according to FBI officials.

For example, in the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas carried out by Stephen Paddock, the law enforcement agency collected a petabyte worth of data, much of it video from cellphones and surveillance cameras. “We had agents and analysts, eight per shift, working 24/7 for three weeks going through the video footage of everywhere Stephen Paddock was the month leading up to him coming and doing the shooting,” said FBI Deputy Assistant Director for Counterterrorism Christine Halvorsen. Halvorsen made those remarks in November at the Amazon Web Services re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, where she described how the FBI is using Amazon’s cloud platforms to carry out counterterrorism investigations. She said Amazon Rekognition could have gone through the same trove of data from the Las Vegas shooting “in 24 hours”—or three weeks faster than it took human FBI agents to find every instance of Paddock’s face in the mountain of video. “Think about that,” Halvorsen said, noting that technology like Amazon Rekognition frees up FBI agents and analysts to apply their skills to other aspects of the investigation or other cases. “The cases don’t stop, the threats keep going,” Halvorsen added. “Being able to not pull people off that and have computers do it is very important.”

While Amazon is now a significant supplier of technology to the government—much of it through its cloud business, AWS, which includes the CIA and Defense Department as customers—it is less clear how its facial recognition software is being used in the public sector. The Daily Beast reported the company pitched the software to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials last summer, a move that has lawmakers and Amazon employees asking questions. The company does not list any federal clients on its customer page, and currently only identifies as a customer one local law enforcement agency, the Washington County Sheriff Office. According to press reports, the city of Orlando recently began a second pilot of Amazon's Rekognition software. The FBI did not respond to questions about its use of Amazon Rekognition from Nextgov.

Frightening Report: Orange County, Florida, America’s Tourist Capitol, Has Highest Level of Sex Offenders

A new report released by the state of Florida has determined that Orange County is home to the highest concentrations of sex offenders in the state of Florida, according to reports from the Associated Press and WFTV

2,299 registered sex offenders infest the area surrounding a theme park hub that calls Universal Studios, Walt Disney World and Epcot home. In 2017, 72 million people visited the Orange County and Orlando area, making it the tourist capitol of the entire nation. Aside from housing the most sex offenders in Florida, the Orlando Sentinel reported that the Greater-Orlando area ranked third in the U.S. for the number of reports to the national human trafficking hotline.

The Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability compiled the data and also found that registered sex offenders in Florida has seen an increase of 53% since 2005, to a total of 29,000 currently.

Bet they still blame men for all the worlds problems

Girl power to kill: Women now control America’s military-industrial complex

It’s not just Congress that’s seeing more and more female faces as of late. Women have taken control of the US’ multibillion dollar military-industrial complex too. Who said that war is only a man’s business?

With the 116th Congress being hailed as the most diverse and most female one yet, the rise of the empowered woman has left few sectors of business and government untouched and now extends to the US’ cosy-cosy club of arms manufacturers and their government procurers.

Politico celebrated this “watershed” moment on Wednesday, announcing that as of January 1, the CEOs of four of the nation’s top five defense contractors – Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Boeing’s defense wing – are now women. The latest appointment was of Kathy Warden as CEO and president of Northrop Grumman.

US Economy Smashes Expectations Adding 312,000 Jobs in December

The U.S. economy beat expectations in December, adding 312,000 jobs, according to the official figures released by the Department of Labor on Jan. 4. Wall Street analysts expected the United States to gain 180,000 jobs in December. The official numbers beat the Wall Street estimate by 43 percent. The jobs gain is the biggest in 10 months and can help allay a recent upsurge in fears about the economy’s health that has roiled financial markets.

The unemployment rate increased by 0.2 percent from 3.7 percent in November. In December last year, the unemployment rate stood at 4.1 percent. The average hourly wage rose 3.2 percent from the same time last year. Most of the jobs gains were in health care, food service, construction, manufacturing, and retail, the Labor Department said. The health care industry added 50,000 jobs, the most of any industry. Food service and construction sectors followed with 41,000 and 38,000 jobs respectively.

The upbeat employment report from the Labor Department on Friday stood in stark contrast with reports this week showing Chinese factory activity contracting for the first time in 19 months in December and weak manufacturing across much of Europe and Asia. Data for October and November was revised to show 58,000 more jobs added than previously reported. The economy created 2.6 million jobs last year compared to 2.2 million in 2017.

The December employment surge pushed the total U.S. employment past 150 million jobs for the first time in history. '“This is the 12th jobs report following the historic rewrite of our nation’s tax code, and the trend remains the same: strong growth for America,” Rep. Kevin Brady said in a statement. “This is what Republicans aimed for with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—this full year of major job and wage gains is worth celebrating.”'

The partial government shutdown does not affect the Labor Department, which will continue publishing jobs figures. Meanwhile, reports from the Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis have been suspended pending a resolution to an impasse between the Democrats and Republicans over border wall funding. The shutdown, if it continues, could affect payrolls in January. Kevin Hassett, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, told reporters on Jan. 3 that federal government worker furloughs could translate to “a big negative” in the January jobs numbers. But the workers will ultimately be paid, he added.

The strong employment report likely keeps the Federal Reserve on course to continue raising interest rates this year, deepening its rift with President Donald Trump, who has chastised the Fed and its chairman, Jerome Powell, repeatedly for the rate increases. Powell is due to appear on a panel with his two predecessors about two hours after the report’s release. The central bank is on a rate hike spree since late 2016. In the eight years before Trump, the Fed kept the rate at a historic low. The president doesn’t agree with the current course and has referred to the Fed as a “bigger problem than China.”

https://themuslimtimes.info/2019/01/04/report-rep-rashida-tlaib-uses-own-quran-not-jeffersons-for-oath/
Newly elected U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) made history Thursday as one of the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress. She was sworn in on the Quran. However, she reportedly changed her mind about using Thomas Jefferson’s copy and used her own instead, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Tlaib told the paper she made the decision some time ago.
“Why uplift someone else?” she told the paper. “It’s starting a new era in social justice. … It just occurred to me: Why am I not using my own?”

Swiss woman breaks Afghan migrant’s nose after he sexually assaults her

A 20-year-old Afghan migrant will probably think twice before sexually assaulting a woman next time. The man’s nose was broken after he inappropriately touched a young woman, Austrian newspaper Heute reports.

The incident happened at 1:30 am at a square in front of Vienna’s townhall, Austrian police say. The Afghan touched several women’s buttocks during NYE, but met the wrong victim when he did the same by a 21-year-old Swiss woman.

She struck back in a reflex and hit the man in the face. As a result he suffered a broken nose, police say. The man was reported to the police and then taken to a hospital for care.

According to Heute the woman was also reported on suspicion of assault. It’s unclear how the case continues as she flew back to Switzerland on Wednesday.

Bullshit it's on the same level. Trump has never used language like that.

No apologies! Anti-Trump lawmaker Rashida Tlaib who vowed Democrats will 'impeach the motherf***er' doubles down on vulgar tirade as Nancy Pelosi says 'it's no worse than the president' and Republicans demand someone 'stand up to her'
Rashida Tlaib sworn in Thursday as one of the first Muslim women in Congress
Shortly afterwards she gave a speech to supporters during a celebratory party
'We're going to impeach the motherf***er', she said about President Trump
Tlaib earlier penned an op-ed for the Detroit Free Press calling for impeachment
She doubled down on Friday morning: 'I will always speak truth to power'
Claimed 'constitutional crisis' means 'this is not just about Donald Trump. This is about all of us'
GOP House leader Kevin McCarthy blasted Nancy Pelosi for not condemning Tlaib: 'How do you work with anybody if this is what they really have planned?'
Pelosi had said minutes earlier that she was 'not in the censorship business,' claiming Tlaib's words were no worse than President Trump's typical language
A liberal congresswoman who boasted in a foul-mouthed itrade that the new Democratic House leadership will impeach 'motherf***er' Donald Trump doubled down Friday morning on Twitter, refusing to apologize .

'I will always speak truth to power. #unapologeticallyMe,' Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib tweeted a day after taking her seat in Congress.

'This is not just about Donald Trump,' she claimed. 'This is about all of us. In the face of this constitutional crisis, we must rise.' She didn't specify what constitutional crisis she was reacting to.

Republican House Minority Leader Kevin Mccathy blasted her on Friday, and slapped at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for not publicly disavowing the slur.

'Are the House majority going to be serious about anything?' he asked reporters.

Pelosi had told an MSNBC audience minutes earlier that she was 'not in the censorship business,' claiming Tlaib's words were no worse than President Trump's typical vernacular

Tlaib is the first Palestinian-American woman in Congress, and dropped her F-bomb at the president during a party Thursday night hosted by the liberal group MoveOn.

Speaking in a dimly lit room, Tlaib told a cheering crowd that she had told one of her young sons: 'We're going to impeach the motherf***er!'
