I don't chime in here much anymore, but I've been "around" since '04.

My prayers go out to you and yours at such a difficult time. The tenacity and drive in your original post is nothing short of remarkable. May the difficult road ahead be navigated w/o too much additional stress and anguish. Be well and hug your loved ones, I can't even imagine what you're going through.

God Bless

We are going to use Steel and Concrete - exactly for the reason of what you survived.
I know of one such home built up in the trees by an engineer. 1ft thick walls with deep windows. Thick metal window covers. Metal roof.

Guy really thought it all out. No fires yet, but he'll be the only house standing.

I can't believe there are so many trees left standing or even branches.
That's pretty typical. When the Sunrise Fire swept thru here 3 years ago it burned about 40 square miles. Even in the areas that were total kill, there was enough timber standing to salvage most of it. About 2/3 of it was a "checkerboard burn", leaving large sections untouched and in most areas it only burned the understory and left the crowns, some of which died a year or two later. About 50 acres of my place burned, I allowed them to do controlled backburning, but only about 5 acres of that was total kill, the understory and regrowth was completely killed. These West Coast fires are cursed by wind, making structure protection nearly impossible. It usually doesn't do that in the mountains....the fire of 1910 being an exception.

I was listening to GROUND ZERO w/ CLYDE LEWIS out of Portland - KXL last night. They had prepped to Bug-out if need be during their broadcast time. Smoke evidently was thick enough to hamper the radio signals at times, but they made it through their shift.
They even had a local TV weatherman come on for a segment about how the fires and smoke were creating their own weather pattern.

Glad to know that you and yours are OK Taezz.

Wow those are some horrific photos. I can't believe there are so many trees left standing or even branches. I wish you all the best in trying to recover from your loss.
A healthy tree with a good root system is a column of water, divinely engineered to withstand the flames, and in the case of most pine trees, it is the flames which catalyze propagation.

The down, dead and diseased trees are the ones that explode in flames. Houses are constructed from dry timber = ready fuel.

But what bothers me most is the mounting evidence that some of these recent fires are being intentionally lit by burnin' lootin' murderers.

The fire on HWY 138 out of Roseburg, Orygun, wiped us out. I am very tired tonight & I will tell the whole story Over the next few days.
My son is in route from So. Cal. to help us. You have seen the drone shot of our home, WELL this is it today.
I had friends in places that got me & Mrs T to our home today. No-one is allowed in yet, but we were blessed to have a "friend" that got us to our home. The fires are still burning & trees are still falling. IT IS A FUCKING WAR ZONE. ALL 14 homes on our road are DUST, YES DUST !!
I have my wife, that shithead Macaw, my pickup, boat & motorhome, NOTHING ELSE !!!
When it happened, we were here at the coast, waiting for the tuna, so we are just fine.

My entire machine shop & wood shop are GONE, FUCKING DUST !! It had to have been a 3,000 F fire. EVERYFUCKINGTHING is melted !!!
If you care to see more, it is called the "Star Mountain Fire".

I will up date in a few days, as I must get back there in the morning.

AGAIN, we are safe & fine.

My heart goes out to you & yours...

After ALL THE WORK YOU DID - What a DISASTER! Glad you & yours are safe (& hope that the insurance aren't @$$holes)... Gonna have to sift through the ashes to find the melted "stack"??...

So much work... from your post in another thread, what a shame...

https://www.goldismoney2.com/threads/building-advice.351071/

If your ground water level is good, I would suggest a full basement, you will never be sorry, it's a lot of space for little money. In addition that solves the slab v crawl space decision. As you age, you will find a slab to be hard on your legs. A raised floor is more resilient. 3/4 Oak floors eliminate the carpet costs.
Water witching is a viable way to find water & a good guy will tell you how deep & the flow rate. I much prefer well water to chemically infested city water. Check well costs, it might be a 5 to 7 year payback.
A metal roof, if the city allows it will last longer than you will. I really like mine.
I bought a great property with a shit hole house & I rebuilt it, I raised the roof 22 inches & the chimney 4 feet.
Just trying to show you how a metal roof looks.
Oh, one more thing, our property has a slight slope so we have no steps into the hose on one side & 3 steps on the pther. Moving furniture & other stuff in is sure nice with no steps.
BTW, shootist knows a lot too.

This is the before shot

I still had not done the front deck at this time. Synthetic wood is great for decks as it holds up well against the weather.

I’ve been reading through here since you started this thread, Taezzar, but haven’t chimed in, yet. I guess it’s mostly because I just don’t know what to say and that might be because I’m absolutely terrified of a house fire, even if I’m not in it. The thought of losing everything is just mind boggling. I used to be in sales and one of my customers described to me once what it was like to have everything important to you just burn up. All the important stuff and all the little things you’ve accumulated over the years to make life better, all gone. She really spooked me.

In any case, I don’t mean to draw your attention to this fact, as I’m sure you’ve already thought about it. But, I realize what a life changing event this is for you, starting over with your home and possessions. Best of luck to you in getting re-established and rebuilt. I hope it all goes smoothly and snag free regarding the financial process and with rebuilding. Godspeed to you and yours. And I am glad you had your bird with you. I know he’s important.

Hey Taezzer,

I don't recall your take on God, but I just want you to know that I am praying to my God, who is the same God as my Dwarf-friend Gimli and a few others here.

Prayers of thanksgiving that you are safe.

If you ever need assistance, give me a jingle. I am only a few hundred miles south of you.

Godspeed sir!

Speaking of the truck...with a little renovation, you could live in that! And drive away from any fire or disasters.

Sure, but buying fuel would be a pain.

And...imagine trying to get snow tires, required by law? Or getting under those low underpasses on some freeways...

We headed to Roseburg this morning. Let me back up. Yesterday my Dodge /Cumins diesel was indicating an overheat condition, 245 degrees. Awww shit, just what I needed in the middle of nowhere. Weather was 97 Degrees, A/C was on & I was pushing the truck hard. I am & always have been a fast driver, tickets - no wrecks. Slowed down & temp. returned to normal. Just as I thought we were outa the weeds, boom, temp. shot to 245 again. Limped into a gas station near 10 Mile (a little town) to get water. Water res. was at the proper level. WTF !. Paid attention & figured the T-stat was faulty. Then coming home, the temp ga. fluctuated from norm. to 245, swinging erratically. Fixed it this am, was T-stat & temp. sensor. Even thou I knew the truck wasn't overheating, I had to get rid of the "pucker factor", as I drive with attention on the gages.
OK, back to this morning. I called ahead to my friend that could get us past the road block, only "Officials" were allowed up the roads from Glide. We could not go today due to the fires reigniting in the area.
I may be repeating myself from time to time, please bear with me.
My son is now in Roseburg & we are planning to go up to the house to finish picking through the debis.
Just got a call, my buddy will escort us in tomorrow. The danger level has dropped.

If your vehicle overheats roll down the windows & turn heater on full blast. It works to help get rid of heat & if no heat comes out you know you are low on coolant.

Did you secure your stash?

Is the steel outbuilding building at all usable for anything?

So sorry to read the bad news TAEZZER. There is no doubt in my mind you will find the light at the end. Sounds like you have good support over there.

Reminds us all that the only constant is change. Life is impermanence. Keep your sights on the everlasting creator. God bless.
