Custodian worked graveyard shift for 23 years for the best reason

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/cus...-5-kids-college-trickle-effect-120028969.html

Video at above link

In our current culture, millennials move from job to job in order to climb the ladder. The average time spent at a company is just two years. For baby boomers and other generations, this has not been the norm. Loyalty and dedication to a single company or career drove, and still drives, much of their working lives. AOL’s original series Lifers features these dedicated, loyal workers who have been in their jobs for years and years. Will they retire? Are they prepared to?

Fred Vautour, 63, of Waltham, Mass., grew up in a broken home and without a lot of support, and his childhood experiences drove his choices later in life: He knew that he wanted to work “not just for the money but because you want to be your best at what you do.”

Vautour ultimately took a job at Boston College as a janitor on the overnight shift. All five of his children went on to be accepted at the prestigious New England college — and because of their father’s employment there, they were able to go to school completely free of tuition.

Vautour’s job has saved his family more than $700,000 in tuition.

Working the graveyard shift — or from midnight to 7 a.m. each day — Vautour has been on the job for 23 years, and in that time he has missed only three and a half days of work.

“You never really get used to working the night shift, but you just adjust to it,” Vautour explains.

He notes that his commitment to his job was about understanding the value of its benefits — primarily, free college tuition for his children — over the pursuit of opportunities for higher wages. And getting to see his two daughters and three sons all graduate without student debt has been immeasurably rewarding.

“He is so passionate about work and about getting us to be the best people we can be,” Vautour’s daughter Amy says. After completing her undergraduate degree at BC, Amy ultimately went on to earn her master’s degree from Boston College too, in higher education.

His daughter Alicia, the youngest of his five children and who earned a degree in nursing from the school where her father has worked all these years, agrees: “The biggest thing I learned from him was dedication.”

For his part, Vautour says he hopes that one day his grandchildren will know that their grandfather “did a lot on my own” — and that his hard work was seen and appreciated by his children, who are passing down those values to their own children now too.

“It’s the trickle-down effect,” Vautour explains.

Concealed-carry permit holder flips the script, shoots and kills alleged carjacker

The unidentified employee, 24, had just arrived for work at Milwaukee Machine Tool Corp., shortly before 6 a.m. Monday when a man named Carlos Martin, 21, allegedly attempted to carjack him with a gun, Milwaukee city alderman Cavalier Johnson told ABC News.

Police have provided few details.

The Machine Tool worker had a concealed-carry permit, Johnson said, and used his legal weapon to shoot Martin, who died from his injuries.

PHOTO: An employee at the Milwaukee MachineTool Corporation, with a concealed carry permit, shot and killed a man who attempted to carjack him. (WISN)

The debate over concealed-carry weapons and the virtues of the “good guy with a gun” has been reignited after the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, this month killed 17 students and educators.

While people who have concealed-carry permits are trained to deal with the consequences of taking a life, that’s never the intent, according to concealed-carry permit trainer and gun expert Dean Hazen of Urbana, Illinois.

“It’s a terrible thing, the worst thing you can possibly do in your life with never-ending consequences,” the retired police officer said. “The intent is never to kill anybody. The intent is to stop the threat. Whether they live or die is not up to you.”

But intent or no intent is beside the point for Johnson, the Milwaukee alderman.

“I think that whether it is mass shootings or what we have here, the root cause is trying to make sure that people who shouldn’t have guns don’t have them in the first place,” he said.

The Milwaukee Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to ABC News’ requests for results of Martin’s autopsy.

Police said the shooter is cooperating with their investigation, after which the Milwaukee District Attorney’s office will review the case and decide whether to bring any charges.

Milwaukee Machine Tool declined to comment on the shooting.

Inspiring 10-year-old girl says the 200 stitches due to a lawnmower blade mishap will make her look tough in basketball

The story is further below.

This is from the father's Facebook post:

So.............yesterday this unfortunate event happened In our small part of the world. I was mowing at our farm and must have struck something as a piece of my lawnmower blade sheared off and propelled towards my daughter. As I seen my wife waving her hands erratically i turned around and saw what no parent ever wanted to see as my daughter was holding her hands on her face with blood everywhere. It seemed that as I turned to run to her that I made it in one step and then we were on the ground trying to stop the bleeding. My wife called first responders and as they were on the way I checked her out. Both eyes looking at me as I hold the 1 inch gash from ear to hairline together she held it together as I assured her it would be ok............fire and rescue came, the the ambulance to Alex, determined that a trip to Fargo was what we needed and into surgery my daughter proved to me she is the human I wish her to be. Strong, unjudging and calm ..........
200 stitches and a skull fracture later she is smiling and giggling with her cousin as we wait for Neuro to clear us to go home........

As I was in a dark ambulance on a 100 mile journey to Fargo I was trying to explain to her what a substantial facial scar may be like..........she looks at me through starry eyes and said.......

"Dad, it really doesn't matter what people look like on the outside anyway"

I always tell her that I want her to be a better human than I am............i just checked that box...........

All the thanks in the world to Kensington Fire and Rescue, Douglas County Hospital staff, North ambulance and the folks at Sanford West Fargo.............yall are the best

Skylar Hedstrom may be only 10 years old, but the young girl has shown maturity beyond her years after she was involved in an accident with a lawnmower blade.

Skylar, of Hoffman, Minn., was watching her father, Brian Hedstrom, mow their lawn on June 9 when he ran over a tool. He told the St. Paul, Minn., Pioneer Press that he’s not a “pick-up-sticks-before-he-mows kind of guy,” but he certainly wishes he had been that day.

The tool caused the blade of the lawnmower to detach and fly backward, where it hit Skylar.

“My wife came running up to me, waving her arms and screaming, pointing to [Skylar],” Hedstrom said. “I jumped off, turned around and she was standing there, covered in blood. It was the scariest thing I’ve seen in my whole life.”

Hedstrom said he reached his daughter in what seemed to be one leap and was immediately on the ground holding her wound together. After he called 911, she was transported to a hospital in Alexandria, Minn., and then was transferred to Sanford Medical Center Fargo in North Dakota to see a specialized pediatric neurologist and cranial doctor.

But that ambulance ride is where Skylar’s winning personality stood out to her father.

Hedstrom wrote: “As I was in a dark ambulance on a 100-mile journey to Fargo I was trying to explain to her what a substantial facial scar may be like….. she looks at me through starry eyes and said… ‘Dad it really doesn’t matter what people look like on the outside anyway.’ I always tell her that I want her to be a better human than I am… I just checked that box…..”

In fact, after rolling her eyes at her dad who said that the scar might be an issue when she’s older and starts to flirt, she said it would probably make her look more intimidating on the basketball court.

The scar, a month later, looks to be healing wonderfully for the 10-year-old, even though, according to Hedstrom, her head had been glued back together. “That’s what he told me. [The doctor] said he glued it together,” he said.

All in all, despite the 200 stitches, Skylar said it felt like getting hit in the face with a dodgeball.
