At least 1 killed in hotel room, police confirm

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas Metro police are investigating a reported shooting at the Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip involving several victims, sources told the 8 News Now I-Team.

Police suspect one person was shot and at least two others were injured in a hotel room, a person with knowledge of the investigation said. Investigators were still gathering preliminary information.

The reported shooter was not in custody as of 10 p.m.

“We are investigating a shooting in a hotel room at the Mirage,” Metro police tweeted shortly after 10 p.m. “One person has been pronounced deceased. This is an active investigation and we will provide more information as it becomes available. Please avoid the area.”

Videos posted to Twitter showed security blocking the entrances to the property.

That's the end of Vegas.

Vegas existed, even after gambling was legalized elsewhere...as an adult playground. All the forbidden things that white-people-behaving-badly wanted to do. You wanted to buy a six-pack? Drink one while walking back to your hotel room? Do it at four in the morning, or at sunrise? It's all good, people!

You wanted to order up a girl, same as you might, a pizza? Sure, Clark County didn't legalize brothels; but Nye County, to the north, did...they'd happily send you a limo with a girl you ordered off the Internet, or off a flyer. You might have a Happy Ending before you got back to Nye County, and have to just turn around.

But all this was based on SAFE STREETS - and hotels, restaurants and facilities. Controlling the vibrants who'd roll drunks visiting from Washington Court House, Ohio. Ensuring safe streets. Even to enforcing forbidden acts - such as urinating on the sidewalk, or propositioning females at random.

Working to keep casino and restaurant and gaming-room employees somewhat honest - the House's odds are high enough legally; run a reasonably-clean game.

You start getting slime coming in and shooting at random...well, once it's an aberration. Twice it's a pattern; third time it's a trend. And time to change vacation plans.

The size of the city is increasing rapidly and bringing the Raiders which brought the Oakland crowd on the weekends is not helping any.

Anyone that thinks those Strip casinos are safe is nuts. Security will call the ambulance to scrape you off the casino floor and that's about it. They will also have metro come and take a report of whatever you had stolen from your person, room, or car.

I honestly don't know why anyone would come to the Strip or downtown for a vacation.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Oh, for the day when employers could choose the KIND of people they wanted working for them...especially in hospitality industries. Where we had an understanding that CLASS...MATTERS. And a casino trying to present a safe, clean, fun image, could screen out the vibrants with their pants at half-mast, as they mumble four-letter words.

The vibrants could just stay in Oakland - having made it theirs, two generations earlier. It's a lost memory, but there was a time when Oakland was all Euro-American. When I was there, thirty years ago, there were still fading signs - such as Jack London Square, and some well-maintained neighborhoods.

But a pestilence knows no political or regional borders - it spreads until it's fumigated or otherwise snuffed out.
