Looks an aweful lot like cilantro

Beaver finished another one (this was the half finished one from before). Damn thing is making harder to get to the river.

First rose-breasted grosbeak of the year. Was worried I would scare it when I lifted my camera, cheerful little guy just broke out in song instead of flying away.

A first for me. A yellow-bellied sap sucker.

Thanks. Yeah the river is really high. Standing room only on the gravel bar that usually is pretty roomy. That said, the air yesterday and today is so extremely dry that I can't even tell that I soaked the heck out of the garden for over an hour last night.

Supposed to get a lot of rain over the next couple days but I won't be surprised if we get those rain storms that show on radar but everything evaporates before it hits the ground.

Lookit the middle picture. See that chubby ring that is on top of the giant extra blob of metal that makes up the very end of the cannon?

That is not decoration. A cannon has a finite limit to how many cannonballs can be fired out of it. With brass cannons*** the way you discover the cannon has failed is not that it explodes, but that you cannot stuff a fargin cannonball in it anymore!

***The mouth of the cannon will go oval -- more and more with every shot -- until a cannonball will not fit in the hole. So they add extra metal at the mouth of every brass cannon. With this one, the makers shored up a shock-wave sync point by adding the extra-extra bulge.

With iron cannons, the solution was simpler: Just make the whole fargin cannon lotsa thicker. When that kind of cannon goes out of date, you discover it because it blows up into pieces.

When the cannon is fired, shock waves are formed. Trial and error -- and eventually mathematics --- determined the points of the "shock peaks" going down the barrel. You can plainly see how ALL brass cannons (inclucing the Naval 36-pounder) above have reinforcement rings going down the barrel at special intervals.

These shock rings are unique for each size, bore dimension, etc. of brass cannons. Now that you are aware, you can instantly spot the differences in these:

Late Add: A brass cannon median life is 600 rounds. An iron cannon is 300.

I have a nice one in a 10-gallon pot. It is just about telling me to go bigger... My neighbor-with-the-tame-turtles-pond has one that looks just like yours, except it is about 7 feet tall -- same proportions. Yours needs room.
