Vernal pool

Vernal pools, also called vernal ponds or ephemeral pools, are seasonal pools of water that provide habitat for distinctive plants and animals. They are considered to be a distinctive type of wetland usually devoid of fish, and thus allow the safe development of natal amphibian and insect species unable to withstand competition or predation by fish. Certain tropical fish lineages (such as killifishes) have however adapted to this habitat specifically.

I was out looking over some bridges and culverts this past week. I snapped the following with my phone camera.

First up, a bridge nearly a hundred years old, still in service, needs minor repairs.

Saw this lone gem while out there. I didn't see any other flowers like this one.

This looking downstream from a fairly large double box culvert under the Natcher Parkway.

This is looking up one of the barrels of the culvert. Had about 3 to 5 inches of sediment in the bottom due to some heavy debris blocking the barrel upstream and impeding the flow causing the sediment to accumulate. Saw some local bats in there as well. I'll see if I can locate the pics.

I'm having a blast watching these guys. The tiny little froggy was incredibly cute tonight. Look like he was having growing pains and started stretching out his legs and slowly started sinking down toward the bottom. He would have fit on a nickel. The tadpole pictured is much bigger. I don't know if they just mature at different sizes, whether there's different species mixed in there or what.

By the way thank you @Unca Walt for your ID. That's closer than anything I've come up with and the entire state of Arkansas was darkened indicating their habitat is the entire state. I had narrowed it down to either a bullfrog or my best guess which was a chorus frog.

It has been a weekend of good eats so far here.

My yesterday: I woke up, picked cucumbers, made pickles, made lunch, soon as I was done with lunch I did some mowing, then started making a gyro dinner. Made pita bread, tzatziki sauce and then made Food Wishes version of "Gyro meat". Turned out amazing, no pics yet, I was too busy chowing it down.

Eggs Benedict is my favorite fruit. Dang, that looks good.
When I lived in St. Paul there was this restaurant called "The Little Oven". I used to get their "Cheddar Benedict", which is basically eggs Benedict with a tomato on top with some cheese on top of that, then the hollandaise sauce melts the cheese a little when poured on top. I basically made that but also used bacon.

Another version I really like is made by The Oak Inn in North Branch (North of the cities just off I-35). They make a "Cajun Benedict" with slices of steak with Cajun seasoning. I love stopping there for one of those and a bloody Mary on my way to Northern MN.

I don't make hollandaise sauce very often but had a craving and also happened to have some lemon to use up so it seemed like a no brainer.

I am loving the frogs! I have a little pond but only after significant rains and especially after the spring melt. Many frogs when it isn't dry but I mostly hear them and rarely see them even if I go looking.

So here's the gyro I made for dinner last night. I can't believe how good and flavorful the meat turned out. Basically a well seasoned dense meatloaf that you chill and then slice up and fry as needed. Here is a link to the video where I got the recipe:

Never conceived of making your own gyro meat. I used to work as a cook at a Greek restaurant so I've eaten my fair share. *Starts salivating

Here is one of the bats I was writing about the other day. They cling to small imperfections in the concrete. There was a pair of them when we were there. I think we disturbed them while we were down there.
