Random Rabid Wolf Spider Facts

- This spider’s sound-making ability is uncommon and is the focus of several studies on insect communication.

- Rabid Wolf Spiders possess the ability to swim.

- Its eyes reflect light like dogs and cats. Thus, flashlights at night make it very easy to spot these spiders on the ground.

- Most people leave these spiders alone as they’re excellent at controlling pests.

These 20 or so guys & gals have been roaming the place this summer.
Up the hill in the morning, down the hill in the evening.
So far they are leaving my tomatoes

Here is something I don't believe I have seen before today. A mantidfly. It looks (and lives) like a flying praying mantis.

It is still on my window and when I watch it makes patterns with its antenna as if it is trying to communicate. lol

Fun! That strike was too close and so was overexposed with the settings I was using. I stopped it down a bit after that one.
How do you set up and take lightening pics?

I use my DSLR, Canon Rebel T4i on a tripod.

For night time I use an interval timer. I often set exposure to bulb and manually hold down the shutter release on the interval timer and then close the shutter after a strike (or after it has been seemingly too long). Sometimes I run the interval timer doing a series of 15 to 30 second exposures depending on lighting.

For day time I use a lightning bug lightning detector to trigger the exposure and if needed a neutral density filter on the lens to allow longer shutter time / wider aperture.

I keep a towel or 2 handy to cover the camera when needed.

Just don't do what I do and stand outside in the open at nearly the highest part of the county in the middle of a lightning storm. whistle:

On that note, while adjusting the picture I noticed a circular or round object and couldn't determine what it was and thought maybe it was a raindrop...

Most likely. If you look at the pic right after that one after I moved back it is more obvious. Started getting hit by rain between those 2 pics which is why I moved back but still got hit.

Learn something here everyday.
From wiki....

Mantispidae, known commonly as mantidflies, mantispids, mantid lacewings, mantisflies or mantis-flies, is a family of small to moderate-sized insects in the order Neuroptera. There are many genera with around 400 species worldwide,[1] especially in the tropics and subtropics. Only 5 species of Mantispa occur in Europe.[2]
