"The Real Casino Royale" (2006)
I. Amanatullah

Published on Apr 7, 2015
An excellent BBC documentary on the creation of James Bond in Ian Fleming's first novel, "Casino Royale" (1953).

"As a new film version of the book Casino Royale opens in cinemas around the world, Andrew Graham Dixon explores the crucial moments in Ian Fleming's life which inspired him to create James Bond. The documentary combines previously unseen archive footage of Fleming with dramatised readings from the novel and follows Graham Dixon on a mission to uncover the real stories behind Casino Royale. He interviews friends and family of the author and those involved in the film, including the new 007 Daniel Craig."

Lesley Gore - A&E Biography - 2001
Michael McKenna

Published on Nov 4, 2017
This is the Biography of singer Lesley Gore - which was originally broadcast in 2001 on the A&E Network. This wonderful video outlines Lesley's life and career, with interviews by Lesley herself, her mother Ronnie, brother Michael, producer Quincy Jones, disc jockey Cousin Brucie, Dionne Warwick, singer/songwriter Ellie Greenwich, Marvin Hamlisch, engineer/producer Phil Ramone, and Lesley's original, long time fan club president, Jack Natoli. The program is hosted by Joan Lunden. Portions of many "live" performances by Lesley are included in this film.

Lesley traveled a long way from Brooklyn & Tenafly, NJ to the world stage: a career encompassing Grammy and Academy Award nominations, countless recordings, movies ("Girls On The Beach", "Ski Party"), TV ("American Bandstand", "Ed Sullivan", "Shindig", "The Donna Reed Show", "Batman", "Mike Douglas", etc.), cabaret at "Rainbow & Stars", and a Broadway stint at "Smokey Joe's Cafe".

This video was taken from a VHS release; to my knowledge, Lesley's Biography has not been issued on DVD, so I do not think this is currently available for her fans to purchase.

Lesley is no longer with us - but her music, and the memories of her wonderful talents continue to enchant us. This video biography is a great tribute to Lesley's life and career - a socially conscious woman and a beautiful, caring human being.

Street Scene - 1931 Film
The Automotive Art of Danny Whitfield

Published on Mar 3, 2018
Street Scene is a 1931 Pre-Code drama film produced by Samuel Goldwyn and directed by King Vidor. With a screenplay by Elmer Rice adapted from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Street Scene takes place on a New York City street from one evening until the following afternoon. Except for one scene which takes place inside a taxi, Vidor shot the entire film on a single set depicting half a city block of house fronts. The movie stars Estelle Taylor, David Landau, Sylvia Sidney, William Collier, Jr., and Beulah Bondi (her screen debut).

On a hot summer afternoon in New York, Emma Jones gossips with other neighbors in her residential building about the affair that Mrs. Anna Maurrant and the milkman Steve Sankey are having. When the rude and unfriendly Mr. Frank Maurrant arrives, they change the subject. Meanwhile, their teenage daughter Rose Maurrant is being sexually pressured by her married boss Mr. Bert Easter. She does however very much like her kind young Jewish neighbor Sam, who has a serious crush on her.

The theme has been used in other movies, including Cry of the City, Kiss of Death, I Wake Up Screaming, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Dark Corner, Gentleman's Agreement and as the overture to How to Marry a Millionaire.

1942 BRITISH WORLD WAR II PROPAGANDA FILM "LISTEN TO BRITAIN" WARTIME ENGLAND 63584
PeriscopeFilm

Published on May 4, 2018
Listen to Britain is an important, highly unconventional WWII British propaganda short film made in 1942 by Humphrey Jennings and Stewart McAllister. The film was produced during World War II by the Crown Film Unit, an organization within the British Government's Ministry of Information to support the Allied war effort. The film is quite poetic in nature and presents life in wartime England during the Second World War. Director Humphrey Jennings visits many aspects of civilian life and of the turmoil and privation caused by the war, all without conventional narration.. This version is the American release, which was created by the War Department. For the American release, Listen to Britain opens with a foreword spoken by Leonard Brockington added by a "nervous civil servant" as there were fears that Americans may be confused by the ambiguity of the film's message.

The film conveys unity and strength of the British at war, including showing factories where tanks are built (18:00), women war workers (18:20), steel mills, farms (2:30), etc. At 2:30 plane spotters watch aircraft flying overhead while farmers work in the fields. Other visuals of note include at 11:22, British Army units including tanks are seen moving through a town. At 11:40 a train goes over a bridge. At 13:40, a live performance in a theater with ordinary Britons singing along is shown. Lancaster bombers taking off at 7:18, an ambulance station at 7:40. At 8:12, the ambulance workers play the piano and rest while waiting for calls. At 8:28,radio towers are seen and we hear the famous "This is London Calling" from the BBC and at 8;55, the radio broadcast headquarters is shown.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? UNCOMMON VALOR " BATTLE FOR TULAGI " USMC TV SHOW w/ GEN. HOLLAND "HOWLIN' MAD" SMITH 86984
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Apr 29, 2018
Hosted by General Holland "Howlin' Mad Smith, the gritty UNCOMMON VALOR TV series documents the U.S. Marines in combat in the Pacific theater during World War II and then during the Korean conflict. Created by Bill Karn, a Hollywood TV director best known for his work on "Gang Busters", "Uncommon Valor" was one of several military-inspired shows of its era (including "Navy Log", "Victory at Sea" and "Silent Service") that celebrated the WWII generation and their exploits.

This episode looks at one of the early USA offensives in the Pacific, the Battle for Tulagi, starting at August 7th, 1942.

The Battle of Tulagi and Gavutu–Tanambogo was a land battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, between the forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied (mainly United States (U.S.) Marine) ground forces. It took place from 7–9 August 1942 on the Solomon Islands, during the initial Allied landings in the Guadalcanal campaign.

U.S. Marines, under the overall command of U.S. Major General Alexander Vandegrift, captured the islands of Tulagi, Gavutu, and Tanambogo among which the Japanese Navy had constructed a naval and seaplane base. The landings were fiercely resisted by the Japanese Navy troops who, outnumbered and outgunned by the Allied forces, fought and died almost to the last man.

At the same time that the landings on Tulagi and Gavutu–Tanambogo were taking place, Allied troops were also landing on nearby Guadalcanal, with the objective of capturing an airfield under construction by Japanese forces. In contrast to the intense fighting on Tulagi and Gavutu, the landings on Guadalcanal were essentially unopposed. The landings on both Tulagi and Guadalcanal initiated the six-month-long Guadalcanal campaign and a series of combined-arms battles between Allied and Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands area.

Holland McTyeire "Howlin' Mad" Smith, KCB (April 20, 1882 – January 12, 1967) was a general in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He is sometimes called the "father" of modern U.S. amphibious warfare. His nickname, "Howlin' Mad" Smith, had been given to him by his troops in the Dominican Republic in 1916.[1]

On the eve of World War II, General Smith directed extensive Army, Navy, and Marine amphibious training, which was a major factor in successful U.S. landings in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He subsequently helped prepare U.S. Army and Canadian troops for the Kiska and Attu landings, then led the V Amphibious Corps in the assaults on the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands, the island of Saipan, and Tinian in the Marianas.

During the Marianas operation, besides the V Amphibious Corps, he commanded all Expeditionary Troops, including those that recaptured Guam. He then served as the first Commanding General of Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, and headed Task Force 56 (Expeditionary Troops) at Iwo Jima, which included all the assault troops in that battle.

Nazi Hunters 12/13: Who Killed Heinrich Himmler
Milentije Kindlovski

Published on Feb 19, 2018
Two weeks after the end of World War II Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and the Gestapo – Germany’s dreaded secret police, killed himself while being interrogated by the British. On the face of it his death looked like straightforward suicide. As the mastermind behind the Final Solution, the systematic murder of six million Jews, no-one mourned Himmler’s passing. However it was not long before rumors about the way in which Himmler died began to spread, lasting for years to come.

Hitler: A Profile 3/6: The Blackmailer
Milentije Kindlovski

Published on May 5, 2018
This episode looks at the slide to war under Hitler, and the way he tried to force his European neighbours into armed conflict.

He started by ignoring the Treaty of Versailles and rearming his country, realising at the time that Britain and France would do nothing to penalise him.

He moved on to re-occupy the Rhineland, annex Austria to make it part of a bigger Germany, and then lay claim to the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia.

All of these provocative gestures met with no resistance, so he proceeded to invade Czechoslovakia before turning his focus on Poland - but this time the allies had had time to rearm.

1944 WORLD WAR II PROPAGANDA FILM ALEUTIAN ISLANDS & PACIFIC CAMPAIGN 87304
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Jun 13, 2018
PINCERS ON JAPAN is a 19-minute 1944 Canadian documentary film, made by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). The film was directed by James Beveridge, who also produced and directed a similar NFB documentary, LOOK TO THE NORTH.

In 1943, Alaska and the north Pacific have become a theatre of war as Japanese forces threaten. For over a decade, Japan had begun training for warfare in a subarctic region, (00:03:45:00) and had targeted the Aleutian Islands where they had maintained a foothold. Both Canadian and American forces are assembled to protect and defend the region, in what came to be known as the Aleutian Islands Campaign. Vintage battle footage can be seen at (00:05:10:00).

In 1942, U.S. Army engineers created the Alaska Highway, (00:06:40:00) carved out of the northern bush to bring American troops and supplies northward. Canada's role is to construct airfields (00:07:00:00) alongside the military highway and train troops to fight in the extreme conditions of the region. Out of Canadian ports on the west coast, ship convoys carrying war material supplies (00:07:30:00) the various outposts of the northwest, while patrol bombers and lookouts keep a constant vigil. Vintage footage of bombers is shown at (00:08:35:00).
The Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands is countered by both a ground and air attack by Allied forces. With the defeat of the Japanese on American territory, Allied strategy moves from defense to taking the fight (00:12:15:00) to the Japanese empire across the Pacific, striking at the heart of Japan.

Typical of the NFB's documentary short films, Pincers on Japan was created as a morale boosting propaganda film during the Second World War. The film relied heavily on newsreel material including "enemy" footage, and combined multiple sources to create a story.

The deep baritone voice of stage actor Lorne Greene was featured in the narration of Pincers on Japan. Greene, known for his work on both radio broadcasts as a news announcer at CBC as well as narrating many of the Canada Carries On series. His sonorous recitation led to his nickname, "The Voice of Canada", and to some observers, the "voice-of-God". When reading grim battle statistics or narrating a particularly serious topic such as the war on Japan, he was "The Voice of Doom".

Pincers on Japan was produced in 35 mm for the theatrical market and was shown over a six-month period as part of the shorts or newsreel segments in approximately 800 theatres across Canada and later, the United States. The NFB had an arrangement with Famous Players theatres to ensure that Canadians from coast-to-coast could see them, with further distribution by Columbia Pictures.

After the six-month theatrical tour ended, individual films were made available on 16 mm to schools, libraries, churches and factories, extending the life of these films for another year or two. They were also made available to film libraries operated by university and provincial authorities.

WesternsOnTheWeb

Published on Mar 1, 2018
The Marshal of Trail City western TV series episode pilot starring Wild Bill Elliott and Dub Taylor. This is the pilot episode for the suggested TV series titled The Marshall of Trail City from 1950. But this show was never launched and never broadcast for public viewing until now. This is episode 31 of The Forsaken Westerns, an original TV series produced by Westerns On The Web Productions. In this episode Wild Bill Elliott is a rancher. The town needs a Marshal and they want Bill to take the job, but Bill is reluctant to do so because he has friends that ride the outlaw trail. It is interesting that the title is Marshall with two Ls instead of Marshal, but both spellings were used in the old west. This is the only known existing episode of this series. The Forsaken Westerns series contains episodes of TV shows that were never broadcast or have not been broadcast in as many as 65 years. Almost lost forever, these rare television film treasures are now being released and uploaded for viewing from the http://www.westernsontheweb.com collection. Watch full length western movies and TV shows full episodes on the Westerns On The Web channel and make sure to subscribe. The Forsaken Westerns is hosted by Bob Terry.

One of the Army Navy Screen Magazines produced during WWII, #22 is comprised of the following segments:

BURMA OUTPOST which looks at a group of eight Americans who are posted in the remote Burmese jungle, serving as an advance guard. At 3:15 a supply drop is made to the group.

At 4:16, the cartoon A FEW QUICK FACTS looks at the Air Transport Command which delivers cargo all over the world.

At 6:38, QUENTIN REYNOLDS TALKS ABOUT G.I. NEWS tells the story of the making of "Yank" Magazine. Reynolds, a veteran journalist who had just returned from the battle of the Aleutians, narrates the entire bit. The segment goes behind the scenes to show how Yank is researched, created and printed, and then distributed all over the world by the Air Transport Command. At 11 minutes Yank rolls off the printing presses. At 12:50, news is distributed by teletype to overseas locations where Stars and Stripes and the Dispatch are printed.

At 15:03, a letter from Iran requesting music results in none other than Oscar Hammerstein granting permission to perform a piece from the musical "Oklahoma!" and -- to the delight of every G.I. in the audience it is performed by an all female orchestra.

Robert Campbell - Mountain Man (1804-1879)
Forged In Ulster

Published on Mar 17, 2018
Documentary about a young Ulster-Scots immigrant who became an American pioneer. From frontiersman to multi-millionaire. This is a rags-to-riches adventure story of a penniless Tyrone teenager who left Ulster in 1822 and ultimately became one of the wealthiest men in America. He would count among his friends and fellow travellers Kit Carson, Jedediah Smith, William Sublette, Hugh Glass & Ulysses S Grant.
Robert Campbell was one of the first Ulster-Scots pioneers to open up the American west.

He spent his first 10 years in the Rocky Mountain fur trade, a 'bold and dashing life' he called it, fighting native Americans, enduring the harshest of climates, suffering near starvation with he and his men forced to eat their horses and dogs. Leaving the mountains he became one of the leading citizens of St Louis with a business empire covering every aspect of commerce, property and river trade. In fact he gave Mark Twain his first job as a Missouri riverboat pilot.
